“Best time ever…”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We had a great time at Palatia Village when we were there at the end of August for a friend’s wedding. They had stayed at Palatia a couple of times before, following a family friend’s recommendation, and decided to have it as the venue for their wedding.

Me and my husband stayed in a studio apartment and I was glad we’d picked this option. Our room was number 21 and was really spacious. With it being open plan we got the full benefit of the air conditioning (additional charge) throughout the living and bedroom area. The view from our balcony was lovely, looking down to Hersonnissos and the sea.

We had everything we needed from a self catering apartment, the kitchen area was well equipped, the bathroom had a reasonably sized shower cubicle with both angled and overhead shower heads, plus a wall mounted hairdryer. Everything was clean and tidy. We've stayed at other self catering complexes and had to go to reception to use a safe deposit box, but we had one of these in our room which I appreciated.

Breakfast was a simple continental affair, nothing special but perfectly fine, we didn’t pay extra for the cooked option as we’re happy with a light option. I had a couple of lunches and we ate there a couple of times in the evening, the food was freshly cooked and tasty. We also ordered a couple of pizzas to take with us to the airport, they boxed them up for us and these were delicious.

The grounds of Palatia Village are pretty and the pool area is nice. Location is great if you don’t want to be in the busy resort of Hersonissos but close enough to walk into. You can also get a taxi up to the more traditional pretty villages. Most of our group would walk down to Hersonissos to the large Spa shop but return via taxi to save carrying their shopping back up the hill in the heat.

George and Maria are great hosts, their staff are always happy to oblige, and they all helped make the wedding and our whole stay very special. The wedding was one to remember, a beautiful setting and a great evening reception with Greek dancing and excellent food. George was a brilliant Master of Ceremonies.

We hired a jeep for a few days of our holiday and George organised this for us through Mikes Tours who were professional and efficient. Maria helped me out with booking a hair appointment in preparation for the wedding and I was really happy with the finished results. Also, as it was my husband’s birthday on the last day of our holiday, I’d asked Maria if she could organise a couple of bottles of champagne and a birthday cake for him, which she was happy to do – the cake was delicious and looked great too. George also helped to make my husband’s birthday special, playing happy birthday over the music system and cracking open another bottle of bubbly for us all.

I’m surprised at some of the previous reviews that have slated Palatia. I’m not sure what people expect from a Greek self catering complex. The food always seemed fresh to me, I certainly did NOT see rotten tomatoes at breakfast. There are quite a few cats around but, even though I’m not a cat lover, these didn’t bother me. The kittens were quite cute and I did NOT see any cats jumping on tables. Yes, you do have to supply your own shampoo, soap and pool towels, but isn’t that the norm for a reasonably priced self catering accommodation in Greece? If you want the bells and whistles, maybe you should dig a little deeper in your pockets and stay at a five star hotel.

I’ve based my rating on our overall experience. Everyone in the wedding party had a fantastic time. It might not be a flashy five star hotel, but it was certainly a five star experience.

I think its all about the attitude you take and what you expected... if people come here expecting a 5* all inclusive Rui Caribbean type hotel then they should have read the brochure better... its simple, beautiful, charming, quiet, clean, friendly, family run and i will go back...
We when B&B only and ate out or in the hotel most nights, ok that can get a little expensive as the Euro/GBP rate is poor now, but again you plan for that , don't you ?
The food at the hotel is good, limited in choice maybe, but that's cos its small and family run.. as i said if you want a massive 5* Caribbean hotel then go there !..
George and Maria are excellent hosts, but that's it, "hosts" ... not staff ... made you feel like you staying with friends...
BBQ on Saturday 10/10... local villages 10/10... local port town 5/10 (but if i was 20 and was there are 3 am i'd probably say 10!)...
Not a massive lot to do for teenagers, but for young families and couples who want to relax and don't mind experimenting with local restaurants its great... again top tip .. Ask George for advise...

Room Tip: Ask George by email for his advice...... do you want sun / shade / views / pool ? its up to you..

There is no wifi u might have near the reception but connection is very poor u will keep loosing connection,
The reception is closed after 11 pm !! We arrived the hotel at 1 am and George the owner show us our rooms while we were waiting him outside standing near the pool..
They clean room each 2 days and replace the towels u will have to use that towels also for the pool
There is no ice at all at this hotel !
U will have to pay 8€ per day to get air conditioner,
U can buy a card for 90 minutes for the wifi that costs 5€ .
U will eat the cheese at the morning melted and u will drink hot hot bad quality of orange juice and hot water because there is no ice ...
Dinner was better than breakfast but still not that good.. I rather to eat outside
Pool was fine
We had one night our own drinks and drink out near the reception and the next day we saw a paper says that it's not allowed to drink here and the penalties are so high for who does from now on . Once we were talking at our room which was near the owner room and at 4 am he's wife came and says hush !! We have work tomorrow !! I mean wtf !! I don't care about ur work I came for a vocation and we were talking normal not loudly and u come to tell me hush !! That was so rude !
U will have to get your own shampo .. The shower area very tiny .. U definetly don't recommend this hotel
I loved it's location .. It was far 10 minutes from hersonissos nightlife area

We just spent there one week and were very happy with some aspects but very dissapointed on others.
If we would go back to Crete, definetly would chose another place to stay, since Palatia Village is just average and there are other places better than this.

- Place is beautiful, it is like a small greek village with houses painted in white and blue, between olives trees, on a hill over Chersonisses

- The studios/apartments are simple but nice. I liked them

- Nice swimminpool and poolbar

- You have to pay for air conditionated 8€/day. That is something we knew only because of somebody else review, but it was not specified by the hotel or the travel company (Expedia) in any way.

- You have room service only every second days. Room service implies cleaning the floors of the apartment. In one week they made our bed just once.

Towels are change only twice at week (they said it is the rule). That means you have clean towels when you come, and they change it just one time more before you leave.

- Shower is VERY small, water goes out everywhere, and since there are not mope in the apartment, we have to use towels to dry the floors and not slipe and break the head. We try to get new towels and they refused, they said that is the hotel policy... I was very angry because we have a 3 years old daughter and I was pregnant in 7th month so that i must be carefull with falling and this kind of accidents.

- The location is 12 min away from the main center, which is good because Chersonissos very noisy is. But it is 12 minutes UPHILL. Don't forget, when you are tired from the day you have to go up the whole way up the hill.
Taxis cost 7€ the ride (3 minutes ride)

- You have to pay for wifi (pre-paid cards). There is free connection but only in the lobby and the signal is not good at all.

- But the worst part was the food.
Breakfast was VERY poor. I have been to youth hostel with better breakfast than this one.
I can tell you what you will find there: 2 kinds of cereals (choco and corn flakes), yogurt, honey, melon and watermelon, milk, coffee, cheese and ham, tomate, bread, butter and one sort of jam (strawberry) and very very very cheap orange juice.
Every single day the same. Nothing change. Not even cacao for the children.

Dinner was a little bit better. At least it changes every night. But quality was not very high. At least not what we expected.

Summary:
The place is beautiful but during our trip we saw that there were a lot of resorts of this kind.
The service was just poor.
If you are looking for apartments, ok. But we thought we were having an studio in a hotel or at least with hotel services. That was definetly NOT the case.

Another fabulous holiday at Palatia Village! Ideally located between the busy resort a 10min walk down hill or head to one of the 3 mountain villages above the complex where there are great restaurants & bars...only €6/7 from the main resort. Apartments are clean, beds & towels changed frequently & great family atmosphere. George & Maria always make sure we are well looked after which is why they have so many repeat guests!!! Hopefully be back next year again

We had 2 weeks in room 14. I couldn't recommend this place more. Friendly, clean, well managed run by well established local family. Guest focused and a relaxing happy atmosphere. No to close and not to far from several local and comercial towns and beach George and Maria will go out of there way to ensure you have the best holiday possible and value for money is second to none. Would definitely return one day!

Room Tip: 14 was a great room with amazing views!
