We arrived for 12 days all inclusive, changed rooms twice. Nice modern hotel but depressing view on the building next door! Mini balcony- no chance to make a single step! So forget glass of vine on the balcony...

Very average food, repetitive, cheap value standard, very poor fruit selection (usually value apples and kiwi, sometimes watermelon) Definately not much of Greece on the plate (beside salad and tatziki if you are quick enough- because once is gone its gone! Also basic breakfast selection, forget full english breakfast there- however every 2 or 3 days you can be lucky to get some sausages!

Quite annoying- not direct access to beach- you need to walk around through reception- main street. Down the beach own Hotel's restaurant but you need to pay- so no free drink there if you are all inclusive, however hotel next door has direct entrance from canteen to the beach. so quite disappointing...

After few days we gave up hotel's food, shop at local Spar for fresh fruits, and ate great Greek food at local restaurants! Crete is amazing, we will be back there but self catering...
If you go there make sure you get room on the right side otherwise you end up seeing wall.

Swimming pool on the roof- not suitable for children (neither adults), No activities for children or whatsoever, struggle with pushchair in the lift, on the way to canteen etc. so if you are travelling with child forget it...

Based on that overall rating: Poor.

Room Tip: just choose room on the right side of the hotel

Stayed at the Golden Beach for second time and really enjoyed our stay.Reception area is minimal artistic decorated next to the bar of the hotel which offers a nice veranda to stay and have a drink. The room was not huge but offered a great view to the sea, wifi is free of charge all around hotel (sometimes it was not very fast, but i guess this is because the hotel was full). All meals provided were very delicious, especially certain greek dishes and the place of the restaurant is very cute with nice seaviews too ( if you are lucky to have a table outside). The staff is very welcoming at all departments of the hotel, reception, cleaning ladies, restaurant, bar.Thank you for great holidays for one more time!

I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend for two weeks at the end of may/beginning of June on an all inclusive basis. We paid around £850pp for the two weeks which we thought was a pretty good price.

The check in was very quick an easy, and the hotel was fairly quiet for the first week and so it was easy to get sun beds by the pool and seats in the restaurant.

The room:

room isn't huge but is big enough for what we needed, very clean and a very comfortable bed. lots of wardrobe and storage space. you have to pay for the safe which is 17 euros per week but instead we put our valuables in a suitcase with a lock and this worked well. The bathroom is very modern but small, and the shower is tiny but is very powerful. You might struggle in the shower if you have mobility problems or are very tall or big. the balcony is quite small but still fits a table and two chairs although the view from rooms on the left side of the building isn't very good. would definitely recommend a sea view room if you can get one! the rooms were cleaned spotlessly everyday and the maids are very friendly.

the food:

as mentioned we went on an all inclusive basis. there isn't a huge choice of food but the food that they had was very nice and they had a good choice of salads. the drinks with dinner could have been improved. there was only soft drinks, beer or rose wine. no red wine or white wine and no coffee or tea except with breakfast. the all inclusive finishes at 10pm so if you want to drink after that you either go out to the bars or have a bottle of something in your room. this didn't really affect us as we had some whisky in our room or went down to the harbour for drinks.

the pool area:

this hotel has a rooftop pool with gorgeous views of the sea and the mountains behind. the sunbeds are the most comfortable i've ever been on! the pool is small but very nice and refreshing although be warned it is very deep- i'm 5'9" and could only stand on my very tip toes, although clinging on to my 6'4" boyfriend helped!- so shorter people or children may find this difficult. In the second week when the hotel was full it was harder to get sunbeds although we always managed to get two next to each other and we slept in till 11/12 most days so if you are up earlier you shouldn't have any problems.

the surrounding area:

the hotel is in a very good location, right in front of the beach and only a ten minute walk to the main harbour with lots of bars and restaurants. The beach is fairly small but nice. sunbeds are 3 euros each per day so we didn't spend too much time on the beach. the sea is quite rocky so sea shoes might be a good idea. there a loads of amazing restaurants. we went to three: Mythos, Veranda and Med bar- the latter we went to 3 times because it was so good! I am writing separate reviews for these so feel free to read them. There is also a very nice cocktail bar on the way to the harbour called palm beach club.

all in all we loved this holiday, it was one of our best simply because it was so relaxing and we loved the freedom to go out to bars and restaurants without being stuck in a resort. We would come back but would probably do self catering or b&b and go out for meals.

Room Tip: make sure you get a sea view room

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Beach Hotel during the first week of June 2013. We’d read previous TripAdvisor reviews and overall, they were pretty accurate. As always, there are pro’s and con’s of any hotel but there were also a few recommendations for the surrounding area that I hope are useful to others.

PRO'S
- The location – there is one main road in/out of Hersonissus and it’s easy to travel everywhere from there so a good base
- The foyer of the hotel is really nice but how long does anyone really linger in reception for?
- Staff are very friendly and helpful
- The sunbeds on the roof are lovely, but the pool and the whole rooftop area is tiny. The photos make it look big but it’s not in reality!

CON'S
- Breakfast selection was very poor and barely changed from day-to-day.
- The bathroom sizes are ridiculous. My husband is 5’11’’ which is fairly standard height for a man and he couldn’t sit on the toilet facing forwards as the shower cubicle was too close to it. I was just about ok and I’m 5’5’’.
- No mirror above the desk in our room (so what’s the point of it?)
- No storage – not even a shelf – in the bathroom
- The mattresses are extremely thin and very lumpy
- There is no noiseproofing in the entire hotel. Bring earplugs for your own sanity.
- Our fridge hadn’t been cleaned out before we arrived and we had to complain that it wasn’t working. It was sorted out pretty quickly but it should have been emptied and cleaned before putting us in there.
- The sheets on one bed wasn’t clean and we had to complain twice (over 2 days) before it was rectified.
- There isn’t really balcony to speak of. Half of it is taken up by the air conditioning unit so you can’t really sit out there.
- Although they advertise free wi-fi it’s very poor. Most bars and restaurants offer free wi-fi though.

Most of these complaints are relatively small and if you have prior knowledge of them then you should be able to adapt i.e. be prepared and bring ear plugs with you, then you won’t have a problem.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW/RECOMMENDATIONS
- Having a car is pretty essential if you’re staying in Hersonissus. We booked the hotel and
flights separately so no transfers were included in the cost. The cost of a taxi to and from the airport to the hotel covered half the cost of car rental but petrol is pretty expensive once you’re out there.
- The beach in front of the hotel is pretty rubbish, take a left out of the hotel and drive down the road. About 5/6 mins away you’ll see a sign for the Robin Hood pub. Turn left there and the road will take you down onto a beautiful beach called Stalis. €4 for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella but if you eat at the restaurant called Akti for lunch on the beachfront, the sunbed cost is waived.
- Heraklion and Knossos are really close to each other and you can cover both in 1 day easily. Do Knossos in the morning and Heraklion for lunch and the afternoon. Don’t book an excursion as they’re really expensive (we were quoted €75 each!) and you can drive and park instead.
- In Knossos, it costs €6 per person to enter the site but it is free on Wednesdays. Go to the guides office near the entrance and pay for a tour guide - €10 each, it’s well worth it.
- For a traditional dinner, go to a village called Piskopiano. From the hotel, turn right and drive straight down the road until you see the Spar supermarket on your left. Take that left and drive up the hill for about 4 mins. The best restaurant there is called Elisavet, the food is wonderful. They made me a dish off-menu on our last night there which was amazing.

Grand entrance, but be aware of behind the scenes!. Rooms, bathrooms & some balconies are very small & whatever you do, if you are staying here DO NOT take a room on the left side of the hotel...There is no view apart from the back of another building. Definately below a 4* expectation. Food is not good at all (Boring & repetitive). I would not recommend All Inclusive at all, Restaurant prices by the water front are reasonable to eat out for the atmosphere & good food.
Good Points: Staff & Location
Overall: Verdict: Avoid

Room Tip: Only a few rooms have a sea view. Do not take a room on the left side - terrible view!
