If one wants to embrace the culture of an area, spend time with the locals. Go on step further and visit their home and cook in their kitchen. Cretan Miracle Diet & Cuisine offers such an experience. Eleni and Giannis host this fabulous event due, in part, due to Greece's economic downturn. Both out of work, they decide to blend two ingredients together; the art of cooking and passion to preserve history and create a wonderful, memorable evening Cretan style.

We picked up a leaflet from our resort and decided to take a cooking class. Under Eleni's watchful eye, we turned wheat flour into dough to create cheese pies, pasta for soup (boiled and fried) and pasta tortellinis to accompany Rooster au Vin. Side dishes included tzatziki, cabbage salad, and a bean dish. Extras included olives and honey too! All the ingredients are from Crete and the recipes handed down from our host and hostess' families. Plenty of homemade wine made especially by Giannis.

The price is $60 euro per person and well worth it! Giannis was kind enough to offer us a ride up and back for a slight charge.

Thank you for entertaining us Minoan Style. We loved it!

I can't recommend this experience enough.

We visited Crete in July and we stayed in Hersonissos. We picked up a leaflet at the resort we were staying at adverting " Cretan Miracle Diet and Cuisine". There were 5 of us travelling together and we thought it would be a different way to spend the afternoon. My husband and I have been on cooking classes before when travelling and we have always enjoyed it.

Firstly, let me start by saying that the afternoon we spent with Eleni and Giannis is far more than a cooking class. It is a whole experience. From the moment we arrived it was obvious that they have a love for Crete, it's history, customs, food and special story.

We were given aprons and name tags and the all important welcome drink. We started off with the class in doors as it was a little windy but as soon as we said we didn't mind being outside - there was a quick transformation and we instantly had a mini kitchen set up under the vine leaves overlooking the the olive grove valley listening to the sounds of nature. This is what made it such a special setting.

We were told about many different Cretan dishes, and we were also given the opportunity to make these ourselves. Eleni was patient and made it all so much fun. We had a lot of laughs along the way. Giannis was kind enough to share wine (that had been produced by his family) with us and ensured that we were never with an empty glass.

We tasted local olive oil, wine, olives, bread, honey and cheeses and we were told stories about all of these ingredients. We helped to make three different starters, a soup, a main meal and two puddings... and then the best part, our kitchen was converted in to a feast table under the stars and we had all the dishes brought out for us to devour! One of the most enjoyable parts about the evening was that Eleni and Giannis joined us for dinner and we had a good chat to them about all sorts of things. It was as if we were sitting down with old friends as they made sure we were so welcomed and looked after.

One thing we made was traditional tzatziki and we have made it so many times since we have been back in the UK.

Anyway, I really do hope that if you are in the area that you will look up this amazing little company and book yourself in. You won't regret it. If anything - you will always remember it.

Thank you Eleni and Giannnis for showing us such a special side to Cretan culture. You are lovely people and you have a passion worth sharing.

We had a lovely evening under the vines learning to cook Cretan dishes. We were extremely well looked after and learnt how to cook several dishes. We tasted the local wines and then spent a happy time eating what we had prepared and discussing life with our hosts. The setting was perfect - in a small village up in the hills with a wonderful view. I would definately recommend doing this - a different holiday experience.
