Just back from two weeks at the imperial belvedere. The facilities are good and the food is what you would expect from an all inclusive.
I would advise not booking through Thompson as the standard of the rooms offered to Thomson holiday makers is 2 to 3 star, yet if you book through on the beach you get the new upgraded suites, which are lovely.
Overall the place meets the needs of families in the busy summer periods.
My only big gripe is the sunbeds around all three pools. There are not enough generally, as it would seem that the hotel policy is no towels on the beds before 9am, this is a joke all beds taken by 8am the latest. One guest complained and the staff removed all towels from the beds, this nearly caused a riot with people shouting and swearing at each other as the staff failed to stay around after dumping the towels on the floor, it changed the whole vibe of what should have been a relaxing day around the pool. It really was very nasty.

I personally would not return, but that is not because it was not good enough, just too big and busy for me.

The staff at the bars are excellent and super efficient. The local old town is lovely to walk to after dinner, and plenty of bars and restaurants to meet all needs along the seafront.

Your children will be entertained and have all had a great time.

Room Tip: Any of the new build rooms are best , 900,s I know are good.

We came at 5 at the Imperial Belvedere : 2 adults and 2 kids of 9 and 13 and the granny.
My mum (78 yrs old) had been to the Royal Belvedere 8 years ago in September and had very good memories of it. Now she is very disappointed by her second stay thinking that the 2 hotels have lowered down in grade.

the + of this hotel :
large ,
good atmosphere (family orientated)
good mini disco for kids up to 10 (there were up to 50 kids on stage having fun : fab)
Did not try the kids club but the team (part of animation at night) appear to be great and in love with children
very motivated animation team (they never stop working but keep on smiling - wonder what are their working hours in their contract ?!) who try their best to make participate people and teenagers but without being too pushy
nice personnel everywhere we go (waiters, reception....) always willing to help even if they do not speak much English or French. Maybe too nice as they never dare to be authoritarian (see below towel example) but this is in their Greek culture. Just expect to see them quite slow (Greek pace)
Hotel somewhat quiet but there was a small hotel just next to our balcony and thankfully they just organised a party a week

the - :
no beach towel. Bizarre as the Royal Belvedere hotel guests (with which we were sharing all amenities) seemed to have some (why were we paying more in that case?)
no sunbeds : we had to behave like Germans at the end and my hubby had to wake up at 7am to reserve some , on last day, the staff had removed all towels : good they should have done that everyday to avoid bad behaviour
you get lost
no explanatory paper in the room (no map, no emergency numbers or explanations about different facilities) : We have never seen that in the hotels we have been in the last 20 years and We are extensive travellers ; this could be just so easy to remediate : just a basic map would do (we discovered new areas on our last day !)
beach far and only large by 3m full of sunbeds to be paid - with a bunch of hotels dedicated to youngsters in mode sea, sex and sun (not ideal for a family) - we were told it is because Hersonissios is a town for party animals
no library where abandoned books by guests could be borrowed
We were disturbed 3 nights by the triggering of fire alarms... only lasts 30s but scary...
Disturbed most of nights by drunk people making noise in corridors when going in their bedrooms
Food and beverage ok but not exceptional. Very disappointed by the fact that the specifically reserved Greek tavern and Italian restaurant were just snack bars with approx same food as the one during day without choice of main restaurant. We felt very un at ease all dressed up there (celebrating an anniversary). For main buffet, quality of food basic ; impression to see a cattle jumping on food. (but nothing surprising in an hotel club)
Hotel built on a slope so you use stairs most of the days (not ideal for old or disabled people)

All in all : nice hotel but which needs to be managed firmly. In its current state, we do not advise it.

We wanted a nice and easy resort and we definitely got one.

The main attraction was the hotel had 7 pools (6 outdoor and 1 indoor) with a massive olympic size one the key feature. It did not disappoint and we spent a vast chunk of our time in the water.

The food was generally of a high standard and with a variety of snacks to keep the kids happy.

Apart from our room being a bit basic, the place was clean, friendly and very relaxed.

Highly recommended!

Me & my family recently stayed at this hotel & had a wonderful holiday. We arrived early in the morning at around 6am & were advised that the resturant had food & drink if we wished to eat, we had a drink & asked to be shown to our room. The 3 room apartment we stayed in was a little dated & basic, but was clean and spacious & served it's purpose. The shower head in the bathroom needs replacing as it leaks when it placed in it holder spraying water up the wall & onto the floor, it's easily resolved by not placing it in the holder, this was not a massive issue for us, a little inconvenient but ok. Housekeeping seemed to come round everyday & tidy the room make the beds etc. never saw them but was clear they had always been.

The food in the resturant was nice and varied & the average person would find something to eat every day, however this not a place for fussy eaters, my youngest son is a very fussy eater & even the kids corner food was not to his liking he lived on chips, cucumber & baked beans for most of the week. My other 2 sons myself & my partner had no problems & enjoyed the various foods on offer. A important note to English families wanting a full English breakfast, there are no normal sausages at breakfast only chopped frankfurters odd at breakfast but hey your on holiday abroad right? everything else was normal. Finding somewhere to sit is by far the most annoying thing in the resturant at dinner time, there is not enough tables, those cleaning the tables can only clean them & prep them when they are vacated & people don't like to rush dinner, so if there is more than 3 of you expect to wait at the doors for a while, whilst watching smaller groups of 2 or 3 walk straight in & are sat immediately.

The evening entertainment was ok, my sons loved the disco, particularly after the main entertainment. They did a Blues Brothers night & a Hercules night when we were there, they were awful they mimed with the film being played over their voices, if I wanted to see the film I'd get the film out to watch. They did a couple of nights of comedy that were mostly funny, although my partner did not see the funny side of a sketch in which people were pretending to play Russian roulette, it was in poor taste, especially in front of children.

The snack bars were great & did some nice ice cream we all particulalry like banana flavour, you can't get this flavour in the uk, which is ridiculous!!!!! there are 6 pools at the hotel. 3 are for very young children up to around 6 years old. This has a snack bar close by. They have 1 oplympic size swimming pool where all the pool activities take place, the pool shallow end that is 1 metre deep, that gets deeper as you go along the pool, the deep end is 4 metres deep, this pool also has a snack bar. There is another pool at the top of the hotel, by the main reception building & the resturant this one is the one my boys like the most & only went as deep as 2.4 metres, this one does not seem to get as busy, it only has a bar not a snack bar though. All the pools have sunbeds & as usual people reserve them, as we only really went in the pool at the top of the hotel I can only advise you that if wait around 30 minutes you will probably see someone leaving & can get one then. If you are planning aday by the pool get up early & reserve like everyone else.

The beach is short 10 minute walk from the hotel, really nice beaches & the sunbeds are Just 3 euros for the whole day & umberellas 2 euros. The easiest access is through Star Beach, this is quite loud & full of young people but not unpleasent. Just before Start Beach if you walk a few metres to the left you will find a great crazy golf course it's exactly how they should be & in fantastic condition, it's not expensive & kids love it. The guy who runs is really nice and friendly too!!

Book your excursions in the local town around half an hours walk away from hotel or a buss stops every 15 mins opposite hotel entrance, there is also a lot of taxi's outside the hotel entrance. I recommend aqua plus water park, great for the kids.

My main negative for this hotel is the smoking there is no designated area for smoking & it goes on everywhere around the pools & bars the entertainment venue has a shisha stall & does a very good trade so I don't see this hotle changing their smoking policy soon. We are a non smoking family & found the constant smoking a bit annoying. There was no smoking in the resturant as long as your inside.

One more note this hotel is based on a hill, lots of steps and slopes.

Room Tip: try and get a room on the main part of the site as some of the rooms can be quite a way from all the facilities

One of the reasons that we chose this hotel is because it requires smart dress in the evening with men wearing long trousers. We read on notice boards that the hotel has 3 basic rules...men wear long trousers in restaurant in evening, no reserving sun beds with towels before 9am and no filling water bottles from the drinking water taps. The only rule that was enforced, was the water bottles. We had to take turns reserving sun beds each morning at 6.30! In order to get a sun bed. Never did the staff remove towels and never did they turn men away at the restaurant for not wearing trousers. But they would stop you from filling water bottles! People would turn up for dinner straight from the beach or pool. No effort made at all of cleaning up or dressing smart. We chose to go out to local tavernas in order to have a special family meal instead of the pushing and shoving of the cattle market of a restaurant. I've been all inclusive before, but never known anywhere like this. It was a free for all!
The rooms were OK, although my sister and her family of 4 had a tiny bathroom. When you sit on the loo, you have to be careful not to chip your teeth on the tiny basin and work surface opposite, room 723.

Entertainment was ok, the usual. Little kids love the evening entertainment.

Transport to and from hotel. We travelled with Tui. On the way to hotel we was the first stop, so quite quick as promised. Sister and family on a different flight went on the magical mystery tour of Crete. She landed 30 mins before us but arrived at hotel 1.30 hrs after us. On way back we was all on the same coach. Should have been 40 min trip according to Thompson site, 2 and a half hrs later we arrived at the airport!

Our Tui rep did recommend that we use the vip lounge for our flight back and I'm glad we did. E140 for family of 4. Foods and drink in lounge, inc branded alcoholic drinks. They take your luggage, get you checked in. You wait in the lounge and they come get you. Fast track through security, have own bus to the plane and are last people on the plane. No queuing outside in the heat, queuing to go through security or waiting at departure gates in a non air conditioned building! This is a smallish airport and it gets very hot and lots of queues. Would definitely use vip again.

On the whole would never come back to this hotel and probably not Crete either, definitely not back to hersonissos!

Room Tip: Ask for main building. The hotel speawls a long way. 737 was a good room
