“Another Wonderful Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful holiday here last year and decided to return this year .We were so glad we did as we decided to have a longer stay and once again had a great holiday .This hotel has something for everyone whatever age and it is so spread out that you can have either have lots of noise and games or be quiet and secluded .

We were welcomed my Maria and her lovely reception staff and taken to our lovely room overlooking the sea .It was modern , well kept and nice and quiet at night .It was local to a lovely pool and a fish restaraunt where food and drinks were available nearly all day .

In the evening we had a choice of several restaraunts but eat mainly at the beach restaraunt where we were looked after very well by Maria and Thomas .We did eat also at the Fish, Greek and Italian which were very good .

We took the local bus to Heraklion which was very nice and also two other local villages .

The staff here are lovely people and I am sure it is one of the reasons they have so many returning guests .The food was excellent and we had no trouble getting drinks at the bars .

We will certainly be returning again next year .

I stayed here with my family (kids 9 and 11) in August 2012. Initially I thought that this hotel only really deserved to scrape its 4 star rating, but over the two weeks I gradually changed my mind. There were a few disappointments though (more later). Mainly populated by Russian and German guests, with a large French contingent too. Seemed to be few English, or just maybe very quiet ones.

Top tip: guys take long trousers for the restaurants or face the humiliation of being turned away - this was strictly enforced.

Food was quite reasonable- there was always salad selections, pasta and two other selections and in addition something grilled in front of you. Biggest complaint would be excessively salty scrambled eggs at breakfast but with 3min/5min boiled or fried to choose from too it wasn't a big negative.
There are three other restaurants to chose from - Greek, Italian and Fish - but you have to book in advance at breakfast or lunch. You can use each once per week, although we arrived on a Tue and the earliest we could get was Sunday. Food good but not necessarily great, but with 5 courses you certainly felt full. Service quite slow in keeping with Greek way of life!

Hotel happy to make packed sandwich lunch if you are going out - book day before. If you come back late, no food between 10pm and 11pm.

The grounds, paths and low walls were immaculately kept and it really was a pleasure to walk around. Spotlessly clean.

There were 5 pools and as we had a sea view room we were closer to one of the quiet ones. Sun beds were not a problem, even at 10am - there were signs saying it is forbidden to reserve sunbeds - but inevitably some people did. This wasn't the case for the main pool, where sunbeds went quite quickly despite no reserving signs, and the choice as to which pool you used was really dependent on where you were staying, although you were free to use whichever you liked.

Main drawback of any pool except main one was that all inclusive meant beer, wine or soft drinks only. The main pool had a full bar service (swim up too) and this may account why it was more crowded then the others.

Our sea view room (beautiful view)- was one of the furthest blocks from reception and hence did not receive wifi. This was disappointing as despite advertising as satellite TV there was only Sky News, BBCWorld or CNN for UK guests - and no kids TV (unless you were German then there was plenty including SpongeBob Schwammkopf). So without wifi couldn't even use the iPad. In fact there were some issues that meant the wifi didn't work with any Apple or Android device even in main lobby - tip: take a laptop (non apple) if you must, or need to stay in contact with work. Staff were accomodating though and even let me use the office internet for some things I couldn't do via blackberry.

Room seemed freshly painted, clean and smart with much older light fittings. Bathroom was more of a disappointment - don't think much had been done for last 20 years - although shower was nice and powerful so scored top marks even if it did flood on every use.

Biggest complaint was how hard the beds were! I have heard this is common for Crete but when I woke up I felt I had been run over in the night and only a warm shower would help ease the pain and numb arms. Kids single beds were fine, but I have to say these were them most uncomfortable beds I have ever slept in - in fact I have slept on more comfy floors!

Bar service was terribly slow! I have been to many other all inclusive resorts and generally there are several bar staff working at frantic pace, and you are rarely kept waiting long. Unfortunately this wasn't the case with 1 or 2 staff at the main bar and a curious orderly line formed while the barman took his time to make the drinks - this amused me being used to the chaotic shove to the front you normally experience (but was fair at least!). Our favourite bar was Georges bar by the main pool overlooking the sea. It didn't open until 7pm, and rarely got busy until 10pm. Say hi to George a really lovely guy. Service at this bar much faster.

Waterfront staff need to learn some people skills, and although you can take out windsurf boards they were quite hostile if you want to brush up on old skills and they want to teach a lesson at the same time - I didn't think the cove/beach belonged to them but they made it clear you weren't that welcome unless you were well out of the way - preferably far out at sea. (Don't go for the windsurfing - go to Mark Warner instead).

Visit the reptile sanctuary "Aquaworld" in Hersonisos (run by a lovely English couple) for a break from the sun. It's only small but all the animals are taken out and handled which makes the experience quite fun.

Avoid excursion to Santorini! Don't get me wrong .. Santorini is both beautiful and unusual - with villages perched high on the mountain side in dramatic fashion. A trip through the tour operator costs 135euro + 13 transfer. The trip starts early in the morning with a transfer to Heraklion port, about 30 to 40 mins. You then get herded onto the seaJet which in itself is very comfortable. Despite rep saying it is 2 to 2.5 hours this is a 3+ hour trip. Sea was (luckily) calm and trip very smooth. Once landed you are asked to go to a coach depending on what language you speak. Then a 30min trip to one of the towns for a quick look around and a chance to grab a drink in on of the many restaurants. Expensive as you would expect - 10euro for 4 cans. With barely time to look around before you need to head back to the coach for the next transfer to the capital. You are told you have 1.5hours; but once you get off, wait, walk, and have a quick drink, we found we had about 10mins for some photos before we had to head back to the coach. At the capital you are told you have 1.5hours to look around and then you can go on the volcano trip for final 1.5hours (for an extra 12euro each - also sold on ferry in advance). Guide keeps saying how great this will be and is what he advises (you can just go to the beach or stay in the capital for another 1.5 hours instead if you wish).
If you opt for the volcano tour you are bussed off to the port where a small boat will take you to the two volcanic islands. I say small - probably holds 100 people and you are crammed on like sardines. When you get to the cove between the islands you can jump off the ship and swim to where you can stand (after about 30m). I must say I was somewhat disappointed - I have visited many other attractive coves and the thermal water I think was oversold (it was no warner than any other shallow cove). Second the rocks were actually quite sharp and no matter how hard you tried it was almost inevitable you would graze something - problem especially with children. I wouldn't bother if I had known in advance. The time available in the capital is whittled down by 10min walk to meeting place, and the constant waiting for all travellers to get back to the meeting point and on the coach. You get the feeling of being pulled from pillar to post without really getting to see the place or having time to browse the quaint shops - many selling high end jewelry and beautiful glass works. An ice cream (3 scoops will set you back 5euro); but it was far nicer to go to one of clifftop restaurants and pay a couple of euros more for an ice cream while enjoying exquisite views. Still having parted with the best part of 30euro for ice cream for 2 adults and 2 children it all seems to come at a price.
Would I go back to Santorini - yes for a couple of nights as a romantic weekend - leave the kids behind (they won't really appreciate it anyway) and enjoy an overpriced meal in beautiful surroundings.

Would I do the volcano/ thermal water - no! Go to Mt Etna (Sicily) for volcano, or Palmukale (Turkey) for hot thermal water. Anywhere along Greece coast for a nice cove! Save the time and spend more browsing shops. Overall it was an expensive day out and a long one leaving at 7am and getting back at 10:30pm. If you do go, miss the volcano and spend all 3 hours in the capital browsing, and admiring the views.

Overall a lovely two weeks. The hotel grew on you, and with the exception of the beds we had a great time.

This is our second review of the Nana Beach Hotel. Our first was in June 2012 and our experience then was so good that on return to the UK we immediately booked again - September 6 -13, 2012.

Bearing in mind we had never, ever returned to the same hotel for a holiday, we made the booking with a lot of expectation but with an acceptance that it may not be quite so great second time around, especially going back at the tale end of the season where everything might be a bit jaded.

How wrong we were! Another perfect holiday ensued, in some ways even better than before.

LOCATION

The hotel is still set and presented idyllically - tiered levels of accommodation and facilities sweeping down to a sheltered bay, a beach and waves breaking onto rocks. All set in a superbly tended array of exotic gardens and trees, through quiet pathways, more like a quaint and proud village than a hotel, beautifully clean and cared for

THE FACILITIES

The place has all kinds of everything really. Restaurants, bars, snack bars, umpteen pools, play areas, entertainment amphitheaters, teens club, kids club, creche, quiet sunbathing areas, lively sun bathing areas, in between sunbathing areas, gym, fitness areas, tennis courts, basketball court, archery arena, synthetic football pitch, sauna, jacuzzi, massage areas, animation, live music, weekly Greek night, water sports, scuba diving on site, disco... It seems to us you can do as much or as little as you like, as lively or as quiet as you like, all in beautiful, well managed surroundings. Just superb.

THE FOOD

A range of self service buffet restaurants (one directly on the sheltered bay) with plentiful food using local produce. Lots of fresh food, lots of variety. You can eat as healthily or unhealthily as you choose. There are snack bars too, convenient for the beach and some of the pools. There are also 3 specialist "a la carte" restaurants - Greek, Italian and fish - guests are entitled to eat once in each one of these per stay. They are all great, all different, with friendly service each time.

THE ANIMATION

This may not be important to everyone, but it is important to us on holiday. However, the hotel is organised such that you can be involved in animation as little or as much as you prefer. The animation team work long and hard and are made up of a bunch of energetic people of a multitude of nationalities and talents. During the day they run scheduled games (water polo, volleyball, football, table tennis etc, as well as aqua fitness, aerobics and Zumba. Look out for Pia the fitness instructor, her fitness classes are suitable for all levels and are great, energetic fun. Then, most evenings the animation teams become entertainers, putting on a range of shows and these then gravitate with the audience to the disco area until midnight. Lots of group dances, lots of fun, energy and commitment from the team make everyone welcome. Look out for Gary and his table top dancing, magic tricks and incredible balancing act.

OVERALL

Thanks to the management and staff commitment to quality and genuine customer focus this is simply the best resort hotel we have ever experienced. We aim to go back there as often as we can. The hotel is so good that we have completely abandoned our long standing policy of never going back to the same place twice. For us, it is incredible and we just can't wait to be back there in such an excellent, friendly hotel with so much to offer.

We are happy to answer honestly any questions any prospective guests may have.

Nana Beach Hotel in Hersonissos, Crete.

I travelled with my partner to this beautiful Island. June 2012

Situated between Hersonisson and Stalis, a beautiful complex, with private beach – water sports, 5 swimming pools. Lovely restaurants and bars.

We booked in late evening, to be greeted by friendly helpful staff. Our check-in was very quick and the next thing we were in a golf buggy being taken to our rooms. We were told that here was a small buffet available near one of the pool bars for a late evening snack, which we went to as we had missed evening meal.

Our room was not far from the main building. Some of the rooms have been through a refurbishment and have been done tastefully. There are a number of rooms in the main building, but most of the rooms are built in smaller buildings – forming a type of Greek village. Surrounded by beautiful gardens. We had a double room, the room itself was very comfortable, (not huge, but a reasonable size) as was the bed and plenty of wardrobe space, in fact we had one each. The bed had decent pillows (with pillow protectors and well as a mattress protector). There was nothing to complain about the room, the cleanliness was outstanding. Fresh towels everyday. Outside the patio doors, each room has louvre doors, when closed these work excellently, they block out light and sounds. My partner slept really well, much better than he usually does when abroad. There is air con in each room. A superb bathroom. There are different types of accomodation available from a double room to a suite.

The main restaurant – is buffet style, with a variety of food available. The food quality was good and there is no reason for anyone not to find something they enjoy. Snacks and ice cream available though the day.

There is a spa there, but we didn’t visit it.

The Main bar is manned by friendly staff and they always have a smile for you. A variety of drinks available of a good quality. Lots of different cocktails . Try a Nana Beach Special, A Blue Aegean, and lots more.

There is a variety of daytime activities, children’s clubs and evening entertainment available. The animation team is friendly and aproachable.

You can walk around the complex , visit the different pools; sit by the sea on the vast number of sun beds and under the same number of umbrellas available all around the place. You can have pool towels from the hotel, and these can be changed as many times as you like.

We walked to Stalis which took about 30 mins we didn’t walk to Hersonissos although you can see it in the distance. Of course Malia is just the other side of Stalis.

Places to visit, we hired a car and drove to Knossos, well worth a visit, we did pay to have a tour guide, our guide was George, very knowledgeable and told us things you just don’t get from walking around on your own or from a book, he put life into the tour. Of course you can just walk around on your own. Entry fee for the two of us was 12 euros and the tour guide was 20 euros. After a few hours, we left drove over the mountain to the Plateau of Lassithi, then over to Agios Nikolaos, very pretty place, drove up the coast to Elounda and saw Spinalonga (the leper Island) If we had more time we would have taken a trip to the island. We then traveled back over the mountain to Malia, had a quick visit then back to the Hotel.

We had a great time at the Nana Beach, everything was excellent, food, room, pool, resort. It was our first visit to Crete and we would go back to the Nana beach hotel again.

Very welcoming.
