Aldemar Royal Mare Thalasso Resort
Ranked #10 of 172 Hotels in Hersonissos
Reviewed March 3, 2014

We stayed at this hotel for 1 week with my friend. The room was junior suit Electra 4, with private pool, it was amazing!!! Everything was at a high level of quality. The territory was also beautiful.
The hotel is located 35-40 minutes walk to Hersonissos, small very touristic town. I liked that it was outside the town. Restaurand food was normal, nothing special, but good.
The beach area was not fantastic, but ok.

This hotel and all it's staff totally exceeded our holiday expectations. We had a beachfront suite with private balcony, sun loungers, table and chairs for al-fresco dining and amazing sea views. The only noise at night was of the sea gently lapping against the shoreline.

The weather was perfect at around 28 degrees with a cool breeze. We preferred to eat outside in the restaurants and there was always room to do this. The choice of food was excellent and varied with 'Theme' evenings keeping the whole family happy. In addition to the main restaurant there were also other restaurants to choose from.

The staff were extremely professional and courteous and always willing with a smiling face from Elena the Reception Manageress to the restaurant and bar staff

We were particularly impressed with the Animation team led by a lady called Patti. She marshalled her team excellently and they followed her example. They kept us amused and laughing for 2 weeks with great humour and a young man called Kubo was a star. The fire show at the end of the holiday organised by Patti was both theatrical and thrilling.

The Hotel Manager had clearly put his stamp on things and the entertainment was varied and not cheesy.

Travelling around the Island was easy as there is a bus stop at the front of the hotel or Taxi's readily available. Mr Nicholls in guest Relations was very helpful advising us the best sight to see and knew the Island inside out.

It is a large complex but there are always buggies on hand if required.

We visited the Spa for treatments and can recommend the massages as they were first class.

Overall a great holiday - Well done !

Room Tip: Remember - Bungalow room type is not the same as in the UK

The hotel was wonderful, food very good, staff friendly, we had a VIP room with a pool shared by four rooms only, this would be wonderful in July and august but we went September and we only had the sun for a couple hours in the morning, and the pool was freezing cold, we never used it, so we wouldn't pay the extra for those rooms again, although they gave us fresh fruit and water daily, the pool area was good, enough beds for all, very good hotel would return again, the only negative was the spa treatments we had, as we go to a lot of spa hotels both abroad and in england we know when the treatments are good and bad, if we return to this hotel we would NOT be using the spa, but may I add that we did mention this to the manager and he was so nice about it and gave us a free lunch on the day of our departure

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed nice, but as I mentioned above, the VIP rooms may be better in July/august

I spent 3 summers in this Hotel with my family. We were there for 1 or 1,5 month. Personal is very friendly and helpful, the food is amazing. The territory of Aldemar is beautiful. To tell the truth, every time I think how to return days. I remember that specific smell of nature, flowers and atmosphere. I adore Aldemar Royal Mare!

Room Tip: Standart room is nice with a big balcony or terrace, 770 or nearest

After a bad start due to a description issue we had a wonderful holiday! We booked a VIP Bungalow with shared pool, half board. When we arrived quite late in the evening we were told we had VIP bungalows UPPER FLOOR! I dont know how others would take a description of' bungalow' but to me that is a ground floor. We needed ground floor rooms as two of us had disability needs. After one night in upper floor rooms one of the two couples were offered a ground floor bungalow. This was fine as she had mobility problems whilst mine were heart problems so, just took the stairs slowly and all was well So, please be aware your' Bungalow' could be on an upper floor. By the time we had booked in it was about 10.30pm and was just starting to wonder where we could eat at that time in the hotel when the very nice man on reception told us that a buggy was waiting to take us to one of the hotel's restaurants to cook us dinner.....wow! how good is that...and the food was wonderful! The whole ten days we didn't move out of the hotel, everything we wanted was right there. Each restaurant had good food with a good selection. Some evenings we paid extra and went to theme nights such a Lobster Night...Gorgeous...a Greek Night..... Great fun! and the Chinese is to died for! One word of warning if you have a bungalows near to the entrance of the hotel it is noisy when sitting round the pool due to delivery lorries coming and going during the day. All the rooms are lovely. Clean and fresh. Clean towels twice a day. The fridge is very handy as there is a shop on site where you can buy beers etc and stock the fridge! ALL the staff without exception were very friendly, helpful, polite. I wish I had looked more at the name badges as there were some staff that we really did have a good laugh with. The chef in the half board restaurant was a scream and the lady that done a Greek dance at the Greek evening and served in the Chinese restaurant was lovely. The beach was a little disappointing and very busy but with 29 pools who needs the beach! Go on try it....you'll have a wonderful time.

I would agree with many of the reviews on various sites, a good hotel with plenty of facilities but a couple of issues mainly concerning late and possibly early season bookings.

We travelled in the first 2 weeks in October, 2013 and many of the island hotels and attractions had either already or were in the process of closing down for the season, including the Royal Mare.

The main reason we chose this hotel was that their main website offered a gluten free menu, which my wife needs. We had excellent communications from the restaurant manager ahead of the holiday but we booked in May for an October holiday and the menu choices appeared to offer a waiter service restaurant for special diets. On arrival we found that due to the late season, many of the hotel restaurants had closed and we found ourselves in the main buffet restaurant. I have to say the Head Waiter knew his menu and ingredients, and was able to direct my wife to suitable dishes but it was not what we expected.

The second late season issue centred on the bedroom air-conditioning. Although it operates all the time, an outdoor sensor determines whether or not cooling takes place. As, in Cretan eyes, it is late season and the early morning or evening temperature is cool, i.e. only 18C to 20C, the system blew non-cooled air into the room. What’s the problem? The day time temperature reached 31C and heated the roof of our top floor room, which acted as an overnight radiator heating the room. After several uncomfortable nights, many mosquito bites as we opened the windows to get fresh air, and our third trip to reception, we were moved to a ground floor room where the sensor was on the other side of the building and "will not turn off as early". Still not good overnight but more comfortable.

The plus side of a late season booking includes empty pool areas, plenty of space and the roads attractions are virtually empty. Re hire cars, I cannot imagine what it must be like in season. We saw literally hundreds if not thousands of hire cars on forecourts waiting for customers. If they are all in use during the season the roads and attractions must be crammed full!

Would we go back? To the island, yes but probably not to the hotel. But that is because Crete is a big island with many dubious roads. We were driving during a 6.4 richter earthquake but didn’t realise it as the road was so bumpy. It takes much longer to get around than you would expect and we would visit the other end of the island for our next visit.
