“Great Property, Best Location, Poorly Managed”

We stayed with family on 29th Dec.13. It has Colonial Touch and remembering you the Raj era. The King sized Sofa & Chairs, Big Chandeliers and Carpet. Rooms are Big,with averagely good Fittings, Cutlery in restaurant/Bar are of fine Bone China. Very-very near to main Market, good Vally view, good lush garden. Now the real thing when we entered in the room Petticoat and under garment of some Lady was hanging in sun of window, Waiters waited till they did not get Tip for bringing Luggage. We have been cared after giving a healthy Tip, More over Buffet was not spread due to lack of guest, still the bar man who was serving in the bar is serving dinner in restaurant. It may be the best in Kalimpong if managed properly.

Room Tip: Ask for Vally view Room

Dear Sir !

We thank you for choosing the Elgin Silver Oaks as your preferred hotel of stay in Kalimpong . We thank you for appreciating the hotel and at the same time pointing out some of the shortfalls . The petty coat and undergarment you talked about hanging was another open guest room you had entered by chance and our house kepper did inform your neighbour that we have a clothes drying line above the bath in all our bedroom bathrooms . The problem was immediately rectified .

Once again we thank you for sharing your experiences and we look forward to serving you again .

This is definitely best option in Kalimpong, and it's definitely worth a stop in Kalimpong! Lovely old hotel nicely appointed in common areas, including lots of historical photos in all the halls and main rooms. Nicely decorated for xmas now---- and lots of charm in any season. I esp loved the fireplace in the dining room, where we sat for meals. Service was really friendly and helpful --- and quick on responses. The room was warm, cozy, clean and well appointed--- including bathroom. Nice view of hills and also the hotel's garden. Only (significant) problem--- the food. Dinner is a set menu (and included in room rate, together with breakfast)---- and unfortunately the lack of choice and poor quality made for a very bad situation. There were hairs/etc in some of the food and some utensils were dirty. Unfortunately, both of us fell ill with the food, and i was really really ill for the next 1.5 days. Overall, a good hotel, but needs some attention to kitchen.

Room Tip: window room looking to garden

The hotel was great and beautiful, the location is good, and the food was delicious, with impeccable service. The only complaint we had was that the bed was very uncomfortable, we kept waking up with back aches in the morning.

Thank you so much for appreciating the Elgin Mount Pandim and giving us your words of encoragement , it means a lot to us and to the staff of the hotel. We have made a note of your complaint regarding the bed being hard .

We will be checking the particular mattress in your room for any manufacturing flaws or wear and tear although in general the mattress we are using in our rooms are Imported Springwell medium orthopedic mattreses which are of the highest industry standards i

No phone in room so had to keep going to reception to ask for things. Bath had no plug and when I asked at reception they couldn't find one and told me to take a shower instead. Curtains in room coming off rails. Garden furniture extremely tatty verging on collapsing. Table cloths in dining room stained. Food poor/adequate. Asked for a Lassi ( available everywhere in India) told they hadn't got any, same with ice cream as a desert, no gin in bar.
Staff mostly indifferent and need proper training. This is not their fault as there is a management issue with this hotel which does not deserve to be linked with the Elgin name. ( We have stayed at all 4 of their hotels)

Stayed here for one night (7th Nov 2013). Very nice hotel with a good valley view from the room. Hotel has a nice little bar and one can enjoy a quiet drink in the evening.Hotel corridors have quite old photographs from 1930's and u can spent some time reviewing those snaps!
Dinner was excellent and they served us hot roti/chapatis. However the breakfast was not buffeet style, instead u have to order from the available choices ( only 2 /3 options were available!)

Room Tip: Most of the rooms have very good view of the valley, so u can choose any room..

The Elgin Silver Oaks is a delightful hotel with a pleasant garden and spacious rooms that are attractively decorated. I stayed during the Diwali festival and the hotel had been decorated with lights. Staff were courteous and helpful, and the manager is to be congratulated on the way the hotel is run. There is a lovely lounge area where free wifi is available. The restaurant meals were varied and service was excellent.
Overall staying at this hotel was an enjoyable experience.

We spent three nights here during our visit to Kalimpong, although two nights would have been sufficient as there really isn't very much to do or see in this town. We were booked in on a breakfast and dinner basis. We had a mixture of waiter and buffet service, depending on numbers. It was waiter service when there weren't very many people about. Waiter service meals were better than the buffet meals. In general food was good with mainly Indian dishes, although usually there were a few European dishes too. The bed sitting room was lovely with far reaching views over the large well maintained garden and valley beyond. Lovely dining room, lounge. A great sense of spaciousness throughout with very wide corridors and staircase.
Bathrooms however are antiquated and in need of updating. WiFi needs extending as it is only available at reception or very close by.

Room Tip: It would appear most rooms have a garden view, although it might be best to check.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Elgin Silver Oaks was built in 1930 and once belonged to the prominent architect Frederick Desraj who built the old Teesta Bridge. It is now converted into a luxury hill resort in the Himalayas. Lounging in the landscaped gardens in a profusion of colour, one is treated to breathtaking views of the Himalayas. The natural decor is characteristic in the imposing Kanchenjungha which can be seen on a clear day, blooming petunias and asters, the serrated violet edges of iris, iridescent butterflies flitting through colourful azaleas, drooping geraniums, proud orchids and heaven, temporarily descends on earth. Sitting in one of the quaint gazebos, the tea seems to be flavoured by the refreshing winds of the Himalayas. ... more   less
