A lovely old house converted to a hotel. New buildings on the property. Our room was in the new part and was just great. Quiet, clean and in very good shape.

Employees were very helpful, polite and tried their best to make our stay enjoyable.

Restaurant and bar were excellent. Typical tourist meals. Very well done

The first impression of the hotel is very nice, as the hotel has beautiful landscaped gardens and lovely flowers. However everything else was amazingly bad.

1. The rooms are small and the carpets are ugly and dirty. I noticed a used ear bud lying on the floor (UGH)
2. The TVs were perhaps from the 1980s - not sure why they were there at all.
3. The most amazing part about the hotel was the restaurant. We reached there at about 1.30 pm and asked for lunch. They told us that we had to pre-order lunch and requested us to go to the market to eat (the market is less than 5 mins away). Its a different matter that we couldnt find even 1 decent restaurant in the entire Kalimpong market and ended up having cereal and milk from a grocery store as lunch. Having learnt our lesson, we pre-ordered our dinner - only to be told that dinner was as per a set menu and would cost more than Rs 500 per head! I guess the hotel is catering largely to European customers.

Thankfully we had planned only a single night in this hotel.

Old, tired, threadbare, dark, cool and musty rooms, table linen stained and not changed, regular power cuts, water went off in middle of showers and either hot or cold, but nothing in between. Could not even turn 1 shower tap. Bathroom grotty. Did not want to walk barefoot, stained bedding, towels damp and very grey. No views when we were there unfortunately. Staff fine, food ok, no internet and hairdryer only on request. Garden was best thing about the place. A bit above town so a bit quieter. Outside looks much better than in.

We stayed here in April hoping for Himalayan views but it was cloudy every day. However the hotel was such a classic that it made our visit memorable. One could imagine the Everest expeditions of the 1920s staying here. The dining room, bar and veranda seem little changed from that era. Outside, the garden setting was well maintained.

Other travellers recommended the older building but unfortunately we stayed in the newer building. It was a bit run down with a worn dirty carpet. There was a bedroom with a comfortable bed and a sitting area with a couple of chairs and a table. It was too cold to use the sitting area. During the day, it was warmer outside and there was a pleasant private patio which opened from the bedroom. The bathroom worked okay.

The restaurant was expensive and had a set menu. Breakfast was Rs 272 and dinner was Rs 544 plus service charge. We tried the breakfast, it was okay but nothing special. Since it was only a 10 minute walk to the center of Kalimpong, we ate at cheaper restaurants there instead.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. It is a heritage property. The rooms were big and had sit outs just outside our rooms. We enjoyed sitting there and relaxing. We also enjoyed our snacks there. Very quite and peaceful place. One should prefer the room in the main building. Rooms were with a fire place so felt the warmth. I surely recommend the property.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in the main heritage building
