“it's a good ONE*-hotel”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

a very rustic 1* hotel. they call it homestay, but it's more a hotel with rooms in cottages.
value for price is good. room has everything one needs. toilet, shower, warm water.
it's clean and relatively quiet locatet. bring a moskitonet with you and something to fix it. and be prepared for a hard matress. food is good india standard. breakfast OK. they serve an excellent porridge, for those who like it hearty. management and staff are very friendly and helpful.
WiFi in the reception aerea for free and at a good speed.
only an easy 10-15 min. walk to humming marketstreet.
if you look for a budget stay in kalimpong, it's a good adress.

All is not good about this place as enlisted in other reviews

THE GOOD ABOUT THIS PLACE

Its natural . More of nature , less of artificial things . Great Flora and Fauna
Beautifully made
Neat and clean
Great pets , a good place for pet & nature lovers

BAD ABOUT THIS PLACE

The complimentary tea is served 7 in the morning , if you wake up late and ask for it later , they dont provide it

Only one geyser for two bathrooms . If your adjacent room occupant is bathing you need to wait till he is out coz geyser does not provide sufficient warm for two to bath simultaneously

Be ready to play with insects . If the couples aren't going well with each other , dont worry they still have good companions to play with - INSECTS .They are just EVERYWHERE in the bathroom , on the bed and walls , in your shoes / socks and suitcase

They have some strict rules . There are frequent power cuts , if there is a power cut after 10 pm , the owner doesn't switch on the genset , they don't even pick up the reception phone . The temperature is normal but HUMID at night and you need atleast a fan to have a sound sleep and also to get rid of mosquitoes and insects. Since they don't switch on Genset , they just leave you at your mercy

The owner don't issue you the proper bill , hence eat up all the taxes that she collects from you . She just issues an estimate .

No internet in rooms

Dinner is strictly served

We stayed in Spring Site cottage for one night on 4th June, 2013. Nice place to relax, cottage was very spacious and beautifully decorated. Owner was very helpful. But please note that, it is a home stay and not a hotel or resort, so if you are visiting with family and children, it can be a problem sometime as you can not order order food or drinks in room except their fixed meals in their cafe only.

Big property, full of trees and plants but I feel that there is a room for maintenance of this wonderful but unorganized greenery. There were so many plants in front of our cottage that these were blocking the view of valley. There was only one TV in the cottage which was quite old and needed immediate replacement.

We were a group of six who planned to visit Kalimpong during the month of monsoon, in early July ‘13. After, due planning and lots of research we zeroed in Holumba Haven. We found lots of positive reviews about it. Before going there we came to know that it is not a hotel but a facility of homestay, a first for most if not all of us. Before booking, while enquiring we really found a very helpful Mrs Thinlay Pempahishey clearing most of our doubts and always keen to clear most of our doubts. So, before actually reaching there we were very much there.
After reaching the resort, all of us were equally dumbfounded about the vastness of the property. It is just a kilometer before the main city starts, so location wise it is peaceful, though not much aloof, the city centre is 10-15 mins walk. It spreads over a huge area. Upon reaching Mrs. Thinley not only warmly greeted us, but also suggested local sightseeing spots and also marked a few good eating places on the city map which she handed over to us. It helped us a lot. We booked the whole of Magnolia cottage which was opened fully to us. (They open the whole cottage only if all the rooms are booked. Else, single rooms can also be booked by individuals). The whole place is very quiet, clam and full of greenery. They have lots of greenhouses for orchids and other plants. Beside Magnolia they do have other cottages named Wood Cot, Bamboo Groove, Spring Site, Pine Wood and Tree Top (the last one lays at the highest point of the property). All of the cottages are equally beautiful and have nice sitting place, living room, walk in closet, etc. and very well decorated interiors. Magnolia is the oldest among the cottages and I found it was built way back in the ‘30s. It’s also very near to the main entrance and lesser in altitude than the others. The owners themselves reside inside the property, so that’s according to me is an added advantage. There are two natural springs flowing beside Holumba, which supplies water source for the property. They do have fooding facility, but as it is a homestay expect lesser variety and little overpriced (which explains their suggestion of various eating places at the beginning of the stay, only morning tea is complimentary). They will also arrange cars for sightseeing on request. There is a little fish pond and quite a variety of pets inside the property. All the cottages are at a distance from each other, so it gives you a sense of tranquility and complete peace of mind. They also do run a souvenir shop in the dining area which is named Orchid. They do have some good collection of Tibetan, Bhutanese and Chinese art pieces, home décor items, woven materials and junk jewelry. Also, they can lend you books on request. At night, though the property is well lit, it is very calm and quiet and you have numerous crickets chorusing for company. The experience is really very different from the city life. Overall, we really have a great experience staying there. All the best to family who runs the property.

Pros: Huge property, very well maintained lots of greenery
Complete peace of mind
Very helpful hosts.

Cons: Though not much, still could appoint a security person at the gate as it’s very open.
Could have little prominent location marking, we missed it at first.
If there is a power cut (fortunately we don’t have any), generator back up is only till 10PM, could extend it.

The resort is very good who like to stay away from the hustle and bustle from normal city life.
The food and rules of the guest house is very strict and very timely. Food is awesome.
The owner is very helpful and polite. Most importantly its run by a very well educated Tibetan family. So its very safe. Many foreigners who visit Kalimpong use to choose this homestay for their accommodation.
Overall great. We enjoyed staying here very much.

We stayed in a 3 bedroom cottage which gave the true feel of a hill station. The rooms were spacious and the cottage was decorated with a large number of artefacts which added to the ambience. The resort was as green as can be with kittens and geese roaming around the place. Just loved the atmosphere...
Service was good and so was the location. The cottage charges was value for money

However, the dinner (fixed menu) was very disappointing and quite expensive for the ordinary stuff that was served. If only the food was good the place would have been excellent

if you want to escape city noise and pollution plan a trip to this destination . you would be delighted with the enormous greenery plenty of plants and a very homely service excellent in all counts except one which which may act as a small deterrent that you have to have meals in a common dinning room. though in my case i was alone as it was not there peak season ( stayed for two nights 17 to 19 June) . but set aside this this place is real haven with exceptionally good and courteous staff and wonderful owners .

Room Tip: I stayed in wood cot cottage . you could try spring cottages of theres
