Chilka is a fascinating place. I spent only a half day, it deserves a full day with local stay in the forest bungalow if you can wangle that one! The dolphins are amazing. Missed the migratory birds---they had already flown :(

Whenever you visit Chilika Lake, do not forget to take a four hour long lake cruise to the Dolphin Point in the makeshift motor boats. Also have hot fried prawns, crabs and chilled beer at one of the islands - though slightly high priced.

Tourists visiting first time should plan and go there. Try and reach early morning before sun rise (this will be difficult) but worth an effort to hire a boat to go to area where sea meets lake and enjoy the view. Dolphin sight is rare and matter of chance. Not much option to eat except for an outlet.
