If you want to spend a calm and peaceful holiday with your family, this may be a good option. This is an old building converted in to a hotel. I must say it is nicely done. I was there for three days during holi 2014. The hotel seems to be nice and clean. Big rooms, large terrace. But, the food was terrible. It came in our room after almost 2 hours we ordered. Another disadvantage is the distance from the Main puri beach (swarga dwar). Auto is available, they will charge around Rs 50/- per trip to the main beach. Alternatively you may avail Mayfair beach, which is around 1.5 km from the hotel.

The BNR Hotel, Puri is the first hotel of its kind, owned by the Indian Railways. Originally belonging to the Bengal-Nagpur Railway, then to the SE Railways, it is now managed by the Chanakya group.

The hotel is located on the sea front. The rooms are named after the erstwhile princely railways of India.

The restaurant servces Indian cuisine.

The property is well kept with large rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor offer better views.

Spent a nice holiday with family at this hotel. Quiet and calm way to relax and spend a nice holiday. Starting from the pick up at the railway station to the reception at hotel to the spacious clean and big rooms and the food it was a nice experience overall. A little on the pricey side but we felt it was worth it given the serene ambience, airy long verandahs, rooms uniquely named, vintage photographs depicting our railway history. The swimming pool though small and the lawns were both well maintained. Only small improvement could be in the promptness of their room services.
Yes this place is not for those who want to see the sea from their bedroom -- the sea is a 5 minute walk but clearly visible from the upper floor balconies.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in the section called 'The Bridges' on the first floor. All rooms are priced sa...

This was a real 'last days of the Raj' hotel, wonderful airy verandahs, huge rooms, all named after rail lines, trains etc. Beautiful manicured gardens, and an excellent pool. Our room was spotless, and very well equipped. The hotel was quite empty, really couldn't understand why. We had dinner in the restaurant on our first night, good food, charming waiters who all gathered around for a chat - but why were we the only people there? The place really deserves to do more business.

Hotel Chanyaka BNR, Puri

We were a group of seven and drove down from Kolkata. We stayed at the “famed” BNR Hotel at Puri. The hotel is not inexpensive and we had heard so much about the hotel. Our two day stay at the hotel was disappointing . The sea is a good 300 m away and only visible from upper floor ( our rooms were on the ground floor) . A wall and huge open ground separates the hotel from the sea. If one wants to view the sea/ go to beach , best is to go to the main road where most of hotels such as Puri Hotel is located .

The rooms are indeed large and “stately” and a ”left over” of the Raj. Lovely photographs adorn the walls. The comfort zone ends there. I had to turn off the AC because the same was leaking and room got “flooded”. I had no hot water for the two days that I stayed ,despite having kept the Geyser on . There is a complimentary WIFI but the connection is very very slow. The buffet breakfast is sparse and service starts at 8.00 am though the restaurant officially opens at 7.30 am. I would recommend eating out as the food in the restaurant , though moderately priced is wanting and service slow . Overall disappointed

Room Tip: Take first floor rooms if you have to stay at BNR Hotel

Best stay in Puri with amazing delicacies and a very friendly and warm staff. The rooms are spacious, the bathrooms are clean, they have a nice swimming pool for the children and children at heart, spic and span lawns and a very old steam engine to carry the aura of the pride of Indian Railways.

We stepped into the hotel, with no recommendations. The property was once owned by the BNR (Bengal Nagpur Railways), but is currently leased to Chanakya group. The rooms are very spacious, ultra-large ones, with high ceiling. It has a nice corridor/ balcony, with a view of the beach. Though the view is not right across the hotel, that worked well for us, since a beach across the road, would have meant a crowd at all times, leaving no privacy. Lying on cane arm-chairs till late night, enjoying the breeze was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The restaurant gives a feeling of coziness. Nice life-size paintings adorn the walls, food served is good, at reasonable prices. Overall, I would recommend this as a good hotel for an economical price.
