“Feeling of a heritage hotel”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

Nice spacious room named Kalka-Shimla Rly. (Room No. 10) with heritage Rly. photos is located on the first floor overlooking a balcony. The view of the sea from inside the room / balcony is fantastic. The hotel is 500m from Puri Rly. Stn. and 2 Km from Swargadwar (Rs. 50/- auto fare each way). However, we enjoyed a swim around 700m from our hotel in a secluded beach with thatched umbrellas & chairs for comfort. The food was pricey but the quality was excellent. The room has complimentary tea / coffee making arrangement. The bathroom was classic. The swimming pool is getting ready. The hotel arranged for a complimentary priest (panda) for offering Puja at the Jagannath temple, maybe for being a holiday home for my employer BHEL. On the whole, a very satisfying experience.

Room Tip: Super Delux Rooms on the first floor overlooking the balcony have better sea view.

As all reviews have suggested below, the place has been well conceived in terms of design, location, etc. What would have improved it is better service. We went just to eat there on our Puri trip. I had heard a lot about this place from people who had stayed here, wanted to experience it first hand. We ordered a lot of items, the waiter warned us that some dishes may take some time, max 20-25 mins. We had time on hand so we went along. It took them around 45 mins to serve the starter and another 45 mins to serve the main course. The staff was courteous but this tardiness wasn't expected. Had they told us it will be difficult to furnish our order we would have explored other options. We generally go to Chung Wah in Puri, this time on my insistence everyone agreed to try BNR but it left a foul taste. The menu items were priced well, however the portions were slightly on the lesser side. We checked the rooms as well, high ceilings, old world charm, et al. If you must stay here, maybe having your own vehicle arrangement would help.

We had been in this hotel for 2 nights (i.e on 16th and 17th May, 2013).The Reception had provided a room (Room no.37) on 1st floor which was extreme north of the Hotel. They had given the ground lawn to a marriage party on 17th, who had rum musical program with Loud speaker and Sound Box till mid night (12’O clock). There was Swimming Pool in the Hotel but without water. The room A/C was also of low capacity in comparison with the size of the room. Water was dipping from the A/C to the wooden floor.
The Room Service was very very poor. On 16th evening we had placed order for food at Room and that dirty plates, spoons and waist had been cleaned on 17th afternoon. That to after making several complaints.
No House keeping was available from 16th morning to 18th morning. Bed sheet was not changed for two days. No drinking water. Soap was not provided initially. On repeated request they have provided regular water in a dirty used plastic bottle.
For wake-up call, we placed request on 17th evening at Reception, at least thrice with a request to provide an Rly Station drop on 18th morning at 05-30 hrs. Neither any wakeup call was there nor any vehicle for Station dropping was arranged (1.2KM).
Even the Reception has not provided me any receipt for the amount I have spent towards 2 days lodging. In totality – it was a horrible experience.

Stayed in 1st floor rooms which are big sized with an open verandah / balcony giving good view of the sea. Though rooms are pretty big, it did not have matching air-conditioner for effective cooling. This AC also had condensate water dripping inside the room on the wooden flooring creating a tip-a-tap sound the entire night. Only 1 ceiling fan was there though the room size needed 2 ceiling fans. Hence, spent the night in discomfort.
Bathrooms were clean but no hand towels (??), foul smell emanating from the water drains ...nobody could attend to it to rectify.
Morning breakfast was poor and tasteless...
Overall service was poor.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms provide direct view of the sea, ground floor rooms open in the gardens and good for...

Stayed at the hotel for 4 days. The rooms are big & spacious with lots heritage theme. Try to get the rooms on the first floor. The staff is very friendly. Had a good expirience. Since i went in off peak season so the the occupancy was low, therefore got a lot of attention from the staff. cant say about the service during peak season.

Room Tip: try to get rooms on the first floor.

For those who like the slightly faded Raj style, this is the place. Each room is themed after a route or company from Indian Railways. We stayed in the Darjeeling room. There is a slightly forlorn steam locomotive on a plinth in the gardens thsat is lit up at night.
The place is large, clean and spacious, and soon to have a pool and pool area at the back which will greatly improve it. First floor rooms have a balcony area with seats and shutters facing the sea.
Unfortunately there is no access to the beach. For some reason the path is blocked off, and we were unable to find a way round.
We were allowed to remain in the room for several hours beyond check out (we had a later
train) , which helped greatly and was much appreciated.
The food was fine although the restaurant area was rather cavernous and empty when we were there.

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea and hotel gardens.

Lovely large rooms. Clean. Good furniture. Lovely clean bath room. A nice restaurant. A decent view. The room was well done. The hotel has been recently renovated but has lost none of the old world charm it had when it war built as a guesthouse for the Bengal Nagpur railways. In Orissa, you get a feeling that anything modern just won't do so this hotel was just right for us!
