“Mixed experiences at Satapada, Chilika Lake”
Review of Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake
Ranked #5 of 40 things to do in Puri
Attraction details
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Chilika lake covers 1100 sq kms, so it is extremely large with many accesses, one of which is Satapada. Satapada is 50 kms from Puri, the road running through the beautiful countryside of Orissa with large patches of water as one approaches Satapada. In winter, these are filled with colourful ducks.

We hired a boat and an excellent guide, who was knowledgeable about the Irrawaddy dolphins as well as the migratory birds that come to Chilika in the winter. It was thrilling to see the dolphins in the distance. However, we were disappointed that we merely got glimpses of them, though we had been told that there are quite a number in the lake. The birds were plentiful, but mostly ducks. We enjoyed seeing the traditional fishing boats on the lake.

It is advisable to start the boat trip as early as possible since later in the day, the tourist motor boats frighten away the dolphins. We went early yet couldn't get good sightings. So, as they say of all wildlife, it's your luck!

I was fool enough to take the trip to Saatpara, one of the entry point to Chilika Lake, about 50 KM from Puri. The hiring charges of an AC Indigo car was Rs. 1300/= plus parking charges and fooding of the driver. The boat charges was Rs. 1700/- for four points viz. Sea Mouth, Dolphin Point, Bird point and Red Crab Point. At Red Crab point, they will show some red crab in a plastic gamela and insist you to purchase fake pearls. At Bird point, the boat will be stopped at about a kilometer from where the birds are there. At Dolphin point. if you are very lucky, you may have a glimpse of tail of Dolphin for a fraction of second. At Sea mouth you can have beer and other drinks and prawn fried in inferior quality of oil at exorbitant price. The driver will compell you to take lunch at hotel with whom he will get commission. The food are spicy and the rates are treble the market rate. I suggest everyone, not to take this trip.
