THe winning aspect of this hotel is its location. You wake up to a stunning sunrise and overlook the man-made lake. It's a tranquil place ideally located the surrounding Shillong areas.

The rooms are of excellent size and the en-suite facilities are very good.

It was cold mid February when we stayed and the in-room heater came in very handy.

The one thing they need to improve on is the breakfast service which is meant to start at 0730 but when we tried it out, we were not served until near 0800. Considering that quite a few of the guests make early start for their daily excursion, this is something that needs to be addressed.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the lake, wake up to view the sunrise at least on one day!

I have first travelled to Shillong as a child, in the year 1959. The memories of the trip are still stored in the compartment of “ Sweet memories of my life”. I fondly remember the walk through the pine trees, fresh and unpolluted air, cool breeze (It was summer vacation of school), and beautiful landscape.
Over the years, that Shillong has been lost. Now, it is highly congested, polluted due vehicular emissions, hot, humid and there are more concrete structures than trees.
I was longing for the old Shillong and mercifully, I found the traces of the old charm at Ri Kynjai.
I trudged through the pine trees once again, breathe the fresh air and in the morning had a beautiful view of Barapani lake, known as Umiam lake, from my room.
If one wants to experience the old charm of this beautiful town and if one can afford it, then this is the right place.
The staff members are helpful and friendly. Their smile will win your heart.
Food is tasty, complimentary breakfast is well spread.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that they charge modestly for the accommodation and the food of the driver.
This is like a time machine which takes you to the good old charming days of Shillong.

Me and my husband stayed 5 nights there and enjoyed a lot with the serene view of the Barapani lake from our balcony. All in all a very pleasant stay there in this resort with an amazing peace and romantic ambience. We used to go downstairs only for breakfast and spend most of the quality time together in the room. The quality of the food is just awesome and the boys gave every effort to make things more comfortable in terms of room service or any other requirements we had during the stay. We had a great experience in this resort starting from the day one till the day we left. Above all an emporium, spa, interior decoration, fireplace make the resort more beautiful to stay long with the said cost. Undoubtedly, the amount for the room tariff and food are well justified.
We would love to stay again in this resort in future. Thank you.

Room Tip: Rooms with Lake view from the balcony.

The Ri Kynjai resort deserves every bit of the accolade that has been showered over it by the various reviewers in tripadvisor. Hence, repeating the same will not add value to this review. It has to be remembered that everything grand has always scopes for improvement and there is no upper limit to perfection. Hence, in this review, I would highlight a few such salient points.
We (I and my better half) spent 4 nights in the resort. It was a long awaited vacation and the aim was to mimimize travel and relax. For this, there is no better place in Shillong than Ri Kynjai. This, of course, if the budget is not a constraint. The superior rooms, over look the Umiam lake and one can just spent the entire day sitting in the balcony, enjoying the view. The rooms are excellent and just as demonstrated in the hotel website. The buffet breakfast is sumputuous, room service is prompt and standard of food is very good. In summary, it's the best place to stay in shillong.
Having said so, the following points need to be considered:
1) Though we booked for 4 nights, on arrival we were asked, if we would check out earlier than that. This gives an impression that the staffs do not expect the guests to stay for more than 2 nights owing to the high tariff. A comment like this rubs off a negative impression immediately as the staff should be looking forward to having guests as long as possible. And if the tariff is an issue, the management needs to reconsider it.
2) The resort of this standard should definitely have internet facilities. Though, they provide a dongle upon request, but it would not take too much of an infrastructure upgrade to put in a Wi Fi hub and a couple of wireless routers.
3) The most extravagant or illogical part of the service is the travel desk tariffs. Upon requesting a pickup from airport, we are said that it will cost Rs 1700. Now, the distance from the shillong airport to the resort is 15km and hence under any circumstances that amount does not make any sense. A local taxi brought us from the airport for Rs. 600. This is one issue the management seriously needs to reconsider. The guests are happy to pay any amount as long it is logical.
Ri Kynjai will remain to be the most glamorous resort in Shillong for some time to come. But if some loose ends as mentioned above are tied off, it will make the experience even more beautiful.
Expecting a management response on this review.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Ri Kynjai – Serenity of the Lake!

We appreciate you taking the time to review us. It is constructive suggestions from our guests that help us improve our service and we always welcome all positive suggestions and recommendations, like you mentioned, “everything grand has always scopes for improvement and there is no upper limit to perfection”.

We would like to thank you for appreciating and really understanding the concept of Ri Kynjai as a place to just relax and enjoy the beauty of the nature and the surroundings overlooking the beautiful Umiam Lake.

With reference to your first point , we would like to clarify that there must have been a misunderstanding at the time of checkin with our Guest Relations Officer. It is a part of our checkin process to ask our guests the “departure time” and not the date as we are aware of the number of nights that you are staying with us. This usually helps us know our guests better so that we can be prepared and help with the necessary actions, like arranging a cab or a packed breakfast, etc. We would love our guests to stay as long as they like and has nothing to do with the tariff.

Secondly, we would like to inform you that we are already in the process of installing WIFI in the entire resort.

Thirdly, with reference to our Travel Desk, we would definitely work out the rates with the vendor again. However, upon check-in we did inform you that we do not have an in-house travel desk. The cars have to be arranged from Shillong specifically for any pick and drop services as well as sightseeing.

At Ri Kynjai we work hard to make sure we give each guest a personalized service and when we receive a gratifying review such as yours, it makes the hard work worthwhile. We will definitely tie the loose ends from our end to make the experience not just beautiful but give a WOW effect to it.

Once again, thank you for choosing Ri Kynjai as your preferred holiday resort and looking forward to seeing you again in the near future.

Khublei,
Danny Langstieh

After many years touched NE India again, surely great etiquette and services provided by all at Ri Kynjai. Our reservations specialist Darity was at her best even post our reservations, during our stay and BESTEST after check-out... yes!! Last moment cancellation in our helicopter ride back to GAU and she did her best to ensure we got our ride back to GAU airport in time for the connecting flight. She is a darling!! I wish the management takes notice of her efforts thru this experience of ours wherein she went out of the way & provided assistance & double ensured until we reached GAU airport. She also called the airline office at GAU airport to ensure our seats were assured as there were chances to reach the airport late. Her efforts are surely to be noticed and very rarely do we see such customer service!!! THANK YOU DARITY!!
The check-in staff, (man!! i forget their names)... both of them!! very very courteous and provided information that suited to plan best during our stay. All other arrangements were done with great efficiency and promptness.
The dining staff - great service... and with a smile to make it better !!

suggestion: the walking trail right below the spa & cottage # 4,5 ... that area can be cleaned up of the plastic bottles and other litter.... the trail is excellent.... if that little cleaning is done, that option to walk around in the hills will be an added pleasure.

Room Tip: ALL ROOMS ARE GOOD!!! IF COTTAGE PREFERRED, I SUGGEST #1(their very first cottage) or # 4, 5. Also t...

It was a family stay. Kids just loved it and wanted to extend our stay. The staff is very nice and very attentive to kids. Kids had a great time running around the lush green surroundings. Only disappointment was that it rained in the night so we could not go for the nature walk due to slippery ground.
We are definitely going back for a longer stay.

Every time we visit Assam, we make it a point to do a trip to Shillong, even if it's just for a couple of nights & this time we chose to stay at Ri Kynjai & it was definitely the right decission; though the tariffs are on the higher side, it's worth every penny. The location of this resort is fabulous, facing the Umiam lake (Bara-Pani), which is a huge water body surrounded by enchanting blue hills. From the rooms & the balconies, one can have a lovely view of the lake with the various boats & the highway that runs on the other end of the lake with vehicles that seem like colourful ants. Inside the rooms, very luxurious, well-lit, has a very classy feel. Service is awesome & so is the food. If visiting Shillong, if your budget permits, don't miss out on this place & during the winter months, since it would be very cold, carry enough thermals. Visiting Shillong & it's surrounding areas is itself a great experience, but staying at this resort added a ton to our experience!
