Anyone stepping into Ri Kynjai will have their breath taken away momentarily - it is so beautifully constructed along Lake Umiam, and the views are out-of-this-world mesmerising. Pretty much the most perfect getaway. The staff were very helpful in arranging a car for us to get from Guwahati to here last minute, and even with the booking, which we were pretty lucky with. The basic room was fabulous - it was so generously spacious, tastefully decorated, and the bathroom was epic! The movable heater was also really welcome in winter. We were 'stuck' in Ri Kynjai for a couple of days because there was a sudden bandh called in Shillong, but we were more than happy to stay put.

The only (major) downside is the food - given that it's somewhat of a retreat and not easily accessible, Ri Kynjai's restaurant is pretty much the only food option you'll have here. Unfortunately, the food prices don't quite match the quality on display, and it was tiring to dread having to decide which food to place a bet on at every meal time, with the knowledge that it'd be mediocre and pretty disappointing. The complimentary breakfast consisted mostly (only?) of vegetarian options - mostly potato based ones. To be fair, the manager did bring out a plate of sausages for us when we requested for more variety - but this only happened on the first day, and the skimping on breakfast items seemed like a bit of a shame for a resort otherwise so well-designed for luxury. Given that it's the only food option that guests have, it does leave a bit of a bad taste in one's mouth (no pun intended) when the food seems to be underwhelming and a rip-off.

That said, save for the bad food and the power cuts, we absolutely enjoyed our stay at Ri Kynjai. The place is perfectly designed (although if you have the bad luck of staying there when other big groups are there too, you'll realise the place isn't quite designed to contain/control noise), the grounds are an absolutely pleasure to take walks and little treks on, and the staff are helpful (they let me use their personal computer and internet because there is no wifi on the grounds). I'm undecided on whether the lack of wifi is a bane or boon - it seems like a pretty big lack on the grounds that this hotel is internationally priced, but at the same time, it *is* meant to be a retreat of sorts. In all, this is still a remarkable place to stay, but could definitely do with some tweaks for a better experience altogether.

I went to Ri Kynjai on Nov 12th, for 3 days. We'd just finished a mad wedding and wanted some peace and quiet. We took a cottage for the lake view... and it was as good, if not better, than the pictures on the website. We went down to the hotel for lunch once and dinner once, but overall, we stayed in our cottage with the fireplace on... just relaxing. I must admit the food was overall very good, with huge portions. The only grouse I will have is the the menu was not updated, so there were a few items on the menu that were not available. The Khasi food, regular food was great. We also had massages. I prefered the normal body massage but the Khasi massage is for those who want a harder massage, for aches and pains. The staff was extremely helpful and very obliging when there was some confusion over the taxi that we ordered. The only problem, I thought, was that by Friday morning a large group had arrived and were so noisy that we actually had the hotel move them away from our cottage to another part of the property. I was glad I was only there for the weekday.... because seems like the weekend would have been too noisy for our purposes! Overall, I would recommend the property to anyone... its absolutely stunning, its very comfortable and if its just the two of you... its a ideal break.

Room Tip: We asked for a cottage with a lake view. It was so lovely that we just ended up sitting on our balco...

We visited Ri Kynjai last week to have lunch on our way back to Guwahati from Shillong. This resort is located in the woods and is quite close to the Umiam Lake. The staff is friendly and the food is good. This is an ideal place to unwind and relax for a few days, far from the chaos of city life. The location of the resort is good because of which it offers excellent views of the Umiam Lake and surrounding hills.

This property has the best view and rooms for the price one pay. Rooms are very large and has a most amazing view of bada pani lake. Food is good. All in all the best place to relax with no pollution and sound. Highly recommended

Have been there twice in span of three years and can go on in order to do nothing but chillax. The people took extra effort in order to make our stay more enjoyable. they took care of our food requirements and were there when ever we needed them.

Room Tip: Choose from the Room facing the lake

A wonderful resort by the side of vast barapani lake, with wonderful and natural creativity. A beautiful experience to stay. You love to see the sun rising over the lake and hills from the balcony when you wake up. have yoga in the room. have a splendid day in the resort. And evening a bon-fire can be arranged on special request. We were on a spiritual tour and it was real nice experience

Room Tip: The roof top cottage though expensive is best, but all rooms are good.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ri Kynjai translates into Khasi as land of serenity. This Spa-Resort presiding over the picturesque Umiam lake 16kms from Shillong is aptly named "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake". The architecture is inspired and derived from the original Khasi thatch huts. Supported on tall circular stilts on the terrace of the hotel blocks are the hybrid cottages derived from vernacular Khasi architecture. These cottages serve to portray the transition from tradition to modernity and have an interpretation of the traditional upturned boat roof done in metallic thatch fused to modern gables. Each cottage has a fireplace in the living/ bedroom area and the mezzanine floor has an additional bedroom arrangement. ... more   less
