My husband and I stayed at Pinewood in Dec'12. Its a beautiful property and the location is good - very quiet and serene. The rooms are cozy, though not fancy. However, one big drawback and disappointment was the service. We arrived at Pinewood at around noon, checked in and then decided to drive to Cheerapunjee. We returned to the hotel late in the evening - tired, worn out and hungry. All we wanted was to have a quick dinner, shower and crash. Unfortunately, that was not in our luck - we had to wait for almost an hour to get our dinner served and then when we headed to our room, there was NO hot water. We called the reception twice for assistance and over the next 2 hrs, they kept sending the plumber to check (who did not fix the geyser in 2 hrs).. My husband had to go storming to the reception to get them to act - after another hour,ie, midnight, we were moved to a room with hot water. We had an early start the next morning and did not enjoy the next day as we had hoped to.
We were very disappointed as they took one hour to serve us dinner and 3 hrs to move us into a room with hot water !!

Stayed here a couple of times on business trip. Nice sprawling colonial area property owned and well maintained by the State Government. Enough parking space. Near, though not walking close, to Police Bazaar. Excellent room service, and a good vareity to choose from for breakfast. Dinner options and preparations are ok but not great. Stayed two times, once overnight and the other time for 2 nights. Found this property definitely worth it. This property provides a nice feel to the guests. Fire place is put on request with an additional charge of Rs. 100. Try it, and I hope you will relish your stay here. Only thing to remember is the beds are two single in most of the rooms, can be placed together on request.

Stayed on 15th Feb 2013 in the Super Deluxe Cottage. I have stayed at 3 different Hotels recently at Shillong. This property is a bit different and has to be seen in context of who is staying in the Hotel. I stayed alone for a single day. Location is awesome. Beautifully located near to Waders lake and a 8-10 minutes walk away from Police Bazaar (main market). No noise unlike Hotels located in and around Police Bazaar like Centre Point etc. Morning time u can have a walk in and around Hotel and Hydel lake to feel the difference. Birds voice seems to take u close to the nature. Hotel is artistically designed and Pine Wood work is appreciable and gives it a Heritage Look. Pine Trees add to the beauty. Room was decently clean and all required toiletries provided.

On the negative side, for a single guy, size of Cottage was too big. Almost 3 separate rooms were there which is well suited only for a big family otherwise a small sense of fear at night. Being made of pinewood, carpet was used in the room which is giving a distinct smell which atleast I did not appreciate. There is no complimentary meals including breakfast and no buffet. Only alacarte. On seeing the occupants, it seemed less were actual tourists and more of politicians/bureaucrats.

The most negative point was what to do after 5 PM when sun sets in. Though police bazaar (main market) is nearby located, there is darkness on the road in the evening. U feel lonely afterwards and the biggest advantage of no noise becomes very disturbing . It was this single big point which made me shift next day to some other Hotel.

Otherwise the Hotel is really good.

We (me & my wife) stayed in this hotel during Christmas for 4 days.....and it was a treat.. Of course the weather was pleasant and the hotel was quiet memorable for it's food and hospitality. We will definitely love to come back to Shillong & for sure in Pinewood.

Room Tip: Try room no 64-67.. It was good.

Once one enters the Hotel premises beside the Ward lake one'll feel that one have just entered into a Bungalow of the British era. We stayed at a room in the left wing of the Hotel. The room was spacious, reasonably well maintained & clean. The best part which we liked (especially my daughter of 9yrs) that the room has a fireplace. The hotel attendants used to make fire to keep the room warm at night.

Service is reasonably good considering the fact that it is a Govt. ran hotel However, the dining room shows ageing in all its walls & furniture. A revamp is urgently required. Food had been pretty good, especially the continental dishes though the menu was limited & some of the dishes appearing in the menu wasn't available.

This Hotel has ample car parking space

We visited Shillong Dec '12 first week after a very long time of 33 yrs and loved staying at this very old heritage place, all it was recapturing our good old times.

Rooms are spacious and quiet though it is close to the town and best location.
