Located inside the famous Pinewood Hotel in Shillong which was once known as "Scotland of the East", the Restaurant serves Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes. Continental dishes are awsome.

Room Tip: This review is only for the Restaurant.

We stayed at the Pinewood for in Shilong for two nights, three adults and two children. I was quite impressed with the overall look of the place, it has a sort of Victorian alpine style. But on closer inpection its clear that the years have not been kind to the pinewood, and the whole place feels tired. The general attitude of the staff wasn't rude or unpleasant, but what you'd expect in a government run organisation of any kind: slightly disinterested, slow and not particularly professional.

We had two of rooms in front of the hotel, that run along the driveway. The rooms are huge with high ceilings, a dressing area and a bathroom, but its all very dated and not very clean. The carpet especially could do with a shampoo.

I think the food is fine if you stick to the Indian menu, the continental items hark back to another era of British cookery (think cutlets and rissoles). The cocktail menu in the bar is also hails from a bygone age, with Whisky Sour, Gimlet, Bloody Mary etc. but I found that quite charming.

Overall all I've rated the Hotel "average" rather than "poor" because you have to remember that you are in a small and rather remote town in north eastern India. As such accomodation options could be far more limited, and not include this potentially charming hotel. But I can't help feeling that if the government passed it into enthusiastic private ownership things could be infinitely improved.

This is a lovely, beautiful and very romantic place. This is a Heritage Place, the buildings are from the British era, but still beautifully maintained.
Though the Meghalaya Tourisim Development Corporation is slowly destroying its beauty and heritage, but you can still enjoy the Place.
Location is exceptionally outstanding & fairytale. Walking distance to The Ward's Lake and very near (5-7min by car) to the Police Bazaar.
Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of its Rooms, but they are Huge, Very well maintained and a cosy fireplace to enjoy the cold nights. The moments of spending the time near the Fire Place was the most Splendid and terrific time of my stay at this Place. The Bathrooms are again very big and with all the amenities. Kindly follow my room tips to enhance the quality of your stay.
You can not expect much of the service from the staff, but still its bearable, and to greater extent the effect of this poor service, a minor irritant can be minimised If you stay in the Front Rooms(#01 - 05).
Wonderful Food. Try their Continental , Cream of Chicken Soup, Bread basket, and for the dessert they have got delicious Caramel Custard.
Do not forget to spend some time in the bar, we again enjoyed our time there.
I've visited this Place many times in the Past, and will again stay there next time, when I'm in Shillong.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front side (#001 to #005) are the best. If these are not available, then request for #2...

A Govt Of Meghalaya run hotel, the place is one of the finest the city has to offer. Set in very picturesque hillside, and far from traffic, the location is serene and peaceful (Shillong itself is, as compared to most other holiday destinations in the country). Fine architecture reminiscent of the bungalows that the British era left behind in the city; fine dining experience, good service, a nice and helpful concierge, and a lovely stay.

If you want to be far from the maddening crowd (and that's why we chose Shillong as a destination instead of Shimla!!!), the location is fabulous. Personally we liked the fact that we were staring up at the beautiful pine trees rather than looking down from the balcony watching people shop. And a short walk would take us to the beautiful Ward's Lake.
Still remember enjoying our morning tea in the calm and serene environment of the hotel, with the ruffle of leaves in the wind providing music to the ears.

Room Tip: The Presidential suite in which we stayed was huge with high ceiling reminiscent of the old royalty...

Stayed at Pinewood on my way to and from Jaintia Hills. Located in the most upmarket and posh areas of Shillong, Pinewood is quite a colonial establishment, in all senses of the word. Nice entrance area, wooden interiors, large suits with dressing rooms, fireplaces, large windows, high ceilings, et al. The rooms don’t have fans or air conditioners but I guess you don’t need any of these given Shillong’s weather for most of the year. There are ventilators in rooms which keep the rooms quite cool and musty too, unfortunately. The rooms are huge, and I liked the tastefully done furniture, but all this furniture is quite old. I think there’s a lot of room for better maintenance, or rather a total revamp of the furniture & lighting in the rooms. Food is delicious, I think best in town, with a very elaborate menu. The bar is good. Above average service quality. Have tried a couple of other hotels in Shillong, but Pinewood is clearly the best.

Room Tip: Try the cottage. Also try chicken monaco for dinner.

Shillong is a very good destination with great climate.
Spacious room with a fireplace, separate wardrobe area etc. Food is average, limited vegeterian options. Service is excellent, almost anything you ask for you will get it.
