we went here after we read the review on trip adviser and it was absolutely amazing. the view is really breath taking and definitely worth the drive. no one in shillong knows about this place u have to go to smit and ask the taxi drivers there, thay all know it. if u want to trek u can go down the hill to a river close by but its really hard on ur knees. a good and wonderful experience. only drawback is there are no eat outs or water points anywhere in vicinity.

We happened to visit Laitlum by chance on our way back to Shillong from Dawki. Our driver was very curious as he,a local himself never visited the place. He kept on asking for directions throughout as not many know of this place ,not even locals. When we reached there the place was totally covered up with fog n clouds. It was totally magical as the clouds n fog cleared after some time.More than the beauty n calmness of the place what amazed us(shocked actually)is the fact that for the residents of the village War-rasong,a flight of 3000 steps is the only way to reach other villages or the nearest market. So if they are going to the market n returning to their village they are actually taking 6000 steps!!There is a rope way however to carry goods up n down.

This is the least known and a must visit place in Shillong. The place is called "Laytlum Canyon". In local language they pronounce it as "lay-lum". Its around 20-30kms from Shillong City. Problem is that no one in city will know where is this place including the taxi drivers, hotel management etc.

How to reach there ? You have to go via a place called "Smit" to reach Lay-lum. Smit is a well known place. Any taxi can easily take you there (some 20kms from Police Bazar). Smit is a small town. There are few shops and a taxi stand there. Ask them about lay-lum. Any of the locals or taxiwalas there surely will know this place. If you are speaking to locals they know only Khasi, you can ask your driver to speak to them. The taxiwalas there might know Hindi. We had a copy of few pics of the place in our mobile. Showed it to the locals, they were able to identify the place. Its around 6-7 kms from Smit. Once u reach the place the road ends and theres a single shop there.

Both sides are beautiful plains. Walk across the plain you will have a beautiful sight of a deep valley. Across the valley you will see big mountains. Its a wonderful sight. Then you can come back and start from the shop, there is a road leading from there (not tarred). Walk towards the end of the road, there is a path to go down to the valley. Its another beautiful sight. Walking down would be rather easy but climbing up would be tedious. At the very end of the valley theres a village. This path is taken by villagers for commuting. If you are planning to go down the valley and come back up, it will easily take whole day. Anyway you will need half day to spend here and its worth it. We went half way and came back.

Once you come back, if you are hungry, the shopkeeper there will make Maggi. They got some biscuits and few other snacks there. If you are planning to go down the valley, make sure you carry water and some snacks.

If you are Shillong , don't miss this place !
In summer it would be better to reach there as early as possible. By noon, it might become very hot.

If trekking is your passion then you should not miss Laitlum canyons. Best time to trek is between 9 to 10 AM, you should be out by 2 PM or else the dense fog could make your return dicey.

If you plan to go here, reach before noon otherwise you will be enveloped in fog and then there,s nothing to see. It,s a spectacle otherwise and you may be even tempted to stroll down the path. You will need good knees to climb back up. The village at the bottom is called War-rasong. It,s a place you will never tire to visit, the beautiful hills and the tiny villages at a distance. It,s a memorable place.
