Unexpected tranquility is the first thing that strikes you as you enter this sacred forest, "Sacred" because the Khasi tribe does not cut any trees here. They believe that the forest is source of a diverse flora and fauna which helps in curing various diseases. One has to cross a thin stream to get in the forest. As you start walking & trekking through the roughly visible trodden track all you hear is your breathing accompanied by a background score performance by crickets, birds & the fluttering leaves. We walked just fir 500 mtrs coming across the Cobra plant (fatal for cows), unlimited monoliths, weird mushrooms, surface roots, 500yr old trees and what not. We had to rush as it started pouring! But trust me jus lie down on the bed of dry leaves for a few minutes and it will feel as if you are in the magical forests of Avatar! A guide is highly recommend. Ask you driver for the same. Carry something to eat as the place will serve as an excellent picnic spot for families. But please don't Litter! Don't miss this....

Peace!

The local Khasi folk will charge you upto Rs200 per hour. A stroll takes upto 1 Hr max 2 hrs if you are really through. It is worth it as they really explain the history of the place. The forest is enchanting. The history thrilling. Do not miss the Viewpoint that is just outside the forest.

A must visit! The forest has a positive aura that welcomes you and greets you with this glorious flora. One is overcome with a sense of calm when strolling through the sacred path.

Can't thank our local driver enough for recommending this place. A serene place untouched by mankind (thanks to its sacred value, no Khasi tribals cut its wood). Has several symbolic rendezvous points of earlier Khasi kings. It has amazing plants, nice mushrooms. You must hire a guide (Rs 200 for 1 hour) to tell you the nitty-gritty. Must visit. Also visit the Khasi Heritage Village just outside the forest.

this is a dense grove of forest which is considered sacred by the locals and no tree felling is allowed over here. the drive to reach Mawphlang was a bit tiresome from shillong due to the poor road quality, but once we reached, it seemed worth it. Carry a compass , a water bottle, a camera and sturdy walking shoes with you. there are some well-trodden trails in the forest which you can follow and simply wander about, resting when you feel like it.
