We were at Shillong for a day and had to take lunch in the city. Our taxi driver suggested that the best restaurant in the city is City Hut Family Dhaba and we went there for an afternoon meal. By the number of vehicles outside and the people inside, it seemed this is a very popular restaurant among the locals as well as the tourists. There is a hotel next door probably owned by the management of the restaurant. There is plenty of parking space for vehicles and the restaurant is at a level lower than the ground with multiple seating areas. The seating area on the left on getting down the stairs is the best one for small groups. We were also shown a family dining area which we did not prefer as the seating was very congested. We chose the largest seating area which is actually a space used for celebrations but also for dining. It is a very large space with a large aquarium at the entrance and many tables with some tables that can hold eight to ten persons at a time. We were pleasantly surprised by the big menu which had listings of Indian and other Asian food, with the latter seeming to be authentic. Among the non Indian dishes, we ordered only the soups and found the 2 ordered soups well made and authentic. The biriyani was average and could have been much better but the rest of the Indian food was good. Service was not very quick which was understandable as we went at peak lunch hours. The food is served very attractively and the portions are good. The prices are reasonable. They have good washrooms too which is a rarity while travelling outside of big Indian cities. They also have display of all kinds of objects from life in earlier times as well life in the north East, particularly the state of Meghalaya, of which Shillong is the capital. The management of City Hut owns many other well known restaurants in Shillong and those too probably are equally good as this one.
