Rangoli Retreat is just opp. The station and in the market which makes its location really convinient with kids. Their charges are at par with the best resorts in matheran but the hotel needs maintainence. The food is good. Opt for this hotel if you want to be right in the market area.

Stayed in Nov 2017 in Non AC Deluxe Room booked through Yatra.com
Located just outside the Matheran railway station, on M G Road, the main touristy street like Mall Road with shops, restaurants, markets etc nearby. Typical budget hotel with approx 30 rooms spread on 2 floors with spacious rooms, comfortable beds & clean linen, Sofa offering seating area, 32" Sony LCD TV, Phone/Intercom, & attached bath & Being a 15 + years old property, it is in need of a face-lift as overall looks outdated & signs of aging seen all over. Offers excellent vegetarian food with lot of variation, so opt for AP - i.e All meals included. Lunch is typical Gujarathi Thali, unlimited - eat to your satisfaction & dinner is usually Punjabi cuisine with Soup , main course & dessert. Breakfast, too, is an assorted mix of Traditional dishes. During our stay on weekdays, only we were staying, yet there was no compromise on the food served. Staff is courteous & ready to help always. Hotel has Children Play area & indoor games facility. Hot water is available only in the morning for 2 hours which is not expected from such a hotel. At least they should make hot water available for couple of hours in the evening as it is required after a tiring day - in Matheran, where we are expected to walk long distances since vehicles aren't allowed here.
The main concerns observed while staying here -
1: The compact size of the swimming pool as well as its positioning make it useless.
2: Bathrooms are L shaped - very congested & crammed, leaving no space to move easily
3: Hot water facility is only available for 2 hours in the morning. Hot water was provided in buckets during our stay, may be bcoz occupancy levels were very low to operate Solar / Boiler etc.
4: Rooms on 2nd floor, opening towards railway station & main street , have balcony & offer lovely Valley View as well as Sunrise, but also are little bit noisy due to busy street around & constant hooting honking of the toy train engine during daytime. For those interested in peaceful environs, select rooms on rear side.
4: Restaurant offers only Veg cuisine, hence non-veggies may be disappointed.
5: Hotel has no elevator

Room Tip: Rooms facing main street & railway station offer great views but are more noisy

Location 4.5/5
Starting with all the good things, a major plus point for this hotel is its location. Its very close to Matheran station and local market. Considering how much you need to walk even to reach Matheran station it’s really a plus point for this hotel.

Food 3.5/5
Its owned and run by Gujaratis (best to my knowledge) hence one can see its in influence in their food.
Lunch: lot of options with decent taste (roti, puran poli, khandvi, dahi wada, sweet & spicy dal, 3 veg
Dinner: tomato soup, Pav bhaji, Palak Paneer (could not find Palak taste though) chaat counter (good) dal rice and Amul vanilla ice cream, pasta (don’t expect authenticity)
Breakfast: upma, wada sambar, bread butter jam, khakhra with ghee (good)

Service 4/5
The staff makes you feel welcomed and tries to pay attention to your request. We dint like the room we got initially so the manager at reception gave us another room. Kaka at dining hall always serves with a smiling face and tries to give attention. Although the may make you rush as they need to finish other chores post people are done eating.

Property 3/5
Hotel is aged and needs refurbishment, rooms were decent but dated, even reception, dining area, recreation area all urgently need a make over.
Pool is very small and no place to relax around the pool. Bathrooms were clean but had a weird layout. I’ve never seen a WC so close to the sink. (u can literally brush and pee standing at the same place :P ) we stayed in Room 2, better/bigger compared to Room 22 offered initially

All in all, it’s a good option if you don’t wish to spend too much and yet save time, energy & money on commuting from/to market/station.

Room Tip: take room with valley view
