“Best hotel in Matheran”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2009

The Verandah in the forest is a class apart from the hotels at Matheran. I went there with my girlfriend in the initial phase of our relationship and could not have made a better choice.

The hotel has an antiquated feel to it. We stayed at the Petit room. Each room is unique and you need to let the hotel management know in advance which room you'd prefer to stay in. Very often the hotel management gets specific requests from Bollywood celebs for specific rooms, or so I hear. Anyway, getting back to the room, the ceiling is probably 25 feet high. Unheard of in this day and age. The rooms aren't air-conditioned but we didn't find that to be a problem even in the peak of summer. The bed was a classic four poster and the room itself was huge. There isn't a bathtub in the room, so you'd have to make do with the shower.

The package we bought included all the meals. The meals are pretty average but I guess better than what most places at Matheran have on offer. I think the hotel has only around 8 - 10 rooms and the chef doubles up as the manager. He is a very jovial and friendly person and added to the uniqueness of the hotel itself.

The hotel is far away from the places in Matheran that see any activity. You'd have to travel on horseback since motor vehicles are not allowed within Matheran.

Overall a great place to stay in if you're in Matheran.

It is not a hotel.. its a lovely house. We stayed at peerbhoy room that was facing the verandah. My experience there was amazing...i loved strolling around the house in the afternoon. Every part of the house had something to say.
There were pictures of people who could probably be the actual owners of the house. Typical old style house, the best part, the hotel owners have not touched the soul of the house. They have maintained the look of a house. It absolutely does not look like a hotel.
The staff is very good. They take care of you very well.. i liked the food too. The dinner was served on a dinner table that was laid in british style.
When you leave you carry more than the memories of the house.

What a beautiful hotel. Bags of character and well-maintained. The location is lovely - very quiet and peaceful. The food is average (although the cookies served with afternoon tea are a real treat!) and the staff need to smile a little more, but these are minor criticisms - overall, it's a delight and very good value for money. Yes, getting to Matheran is a bit of a number and the Verandah in the Forest is on the far side of town, but it's so worth it. Don't miss Matheran and don't miss this hotel!

This place was amazing! Away form the other hotels, yet only a 10m walk into the village. Rooms were very clean and spacious! Superb service, for ANYTHING you need and with a smile. The best bit was the food. I am one hell of a fussy eater, yet the chef cooked up stuff that beat what I have eaten in many very expensive London restaurants.

We, a family of 4 including 12 and 14 year old children, spent 2 nights at the Verandah in the Forest.
Getting there was an amazing experience for us as there is no motorised transport from the car park to the hotel. We chose a horse each and a lady porter to carry our bags for the hour long trip to the hotel.
We were welcomed with cold drinks and were pleased that the website pictures did it justice. The Verandah itself, the lounge and dining rooms are in their original style and are truly grand.
The rooms are spacious cool and comfortable.
Evening meal was taken at the 20 seater dining table, complete with candelabras, only surprise was the food, unexpectedly English (Roast chicken both nights). I guess this is aimed at local tourists having the full colonial experience ?
Breakfast taken on the verandah overlooking the forest was an excellent blend of Indian and continental . So nice in fact, that as soon as the waiters went inside, our table of food was ambushed by a coordinated attack of a troop of at least 10 monkies !
They were only interested in the food and we found it really funny and entertaining.
The next morning 2 waiters, armed with "naughty monkey" sticks guarded our table and all was well.
Overall, a very pleasant, quiet and memorable place to stay in the most unusual of places,Matheran.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The paths once cleared by the British in the forests of Matheran, making it the last British hill station have acquired a new identity as the place where Bombay’s movers and shakers which include filmstars and businessmen come to spend a few quiet and peaceful days.Perched atop the Sahyadri ranges, Matheran is Asia’s only pedestrian hill resort. Chug up in a toy train, trot, or arrive in a palanquin, past gigantic mansions built by the British, the Parsis, and the Bohras. The Verandah in the Forest was the second house to be built on the isolated Western Ghats, by Captain Barr. Now, with every facility in place, it is reputed to be second to none! Indeed, the nobility of the proportions of The Verandah bring civilizational honour to the Sahyadri ranges. Lounge like never before in this verandah of your dreams. Read under the highest domestic ceiling you would have known in the salon – 12 metres/35 feet high. Stroll down to Charlotte Lake. Or take longer walks with a picnic basket. Relish the local cuisines. Heave your chest, muscle your calves, take all the oxygen back in your lungs. Link your planet with your own two feet.Find space for more space in your mind. Or lose yourself to find yourself anew.Long after you return, you will wonder who would have dared to sprawl out such a tree-home space in such spell-binding wilderness? ... more   less
