The best part about a vacation is that one gets to relax ! This is a place which scores full marks on that aspect. Stayed there in November and had booked the Kotwal and Peerboy rooms , was a perfect place which opened up to the verandah and our kids had a blast. The place is perfectly located close to the lake giving one too many options to visit the tourist points as well as enjoy the activities such as river crossing , valley crossing etc. Also, the walk to the hustle bustle of the market was not too far and fun to walk .
The only slight drawback about the place is the food. There are absolutely no a la carte options available , though whatever is served is very good though priced very steep ! The sit down dinner where 4 course meal is served on a beautiful table is the highlight . Breakfast options also very limited. Considering the tarriff charged the food options could be better.
Service is very good and we were always greeted by smiling helpers.
Would certainly go back !

Room Tip: If travelling with kids the verandah rooms are better , else the rooms which open to the garden can...

Stayed one night at the Verandah and enjoyed almost everything about the place. Of course, it was not a surprise... one has heard so much about the Neemrana experience and this property lived up to it.

Location: TVITF is about half an hour walk from Matheran station / market, so be prepared to backpack it or engage a horse / cart / coolie to assist your journey. The bungalow is in the forest, so walking to/from it after sunset wouldn't be advisable, unless you have local company. Charlotte Lake and Echo Point (amongst a few others) are just a few minutes' walk from here.

Room: They have different room designs and the website has good descriptions / photos of the various options. We chose Kotwal, a suite with 3 beds in two rooms. This was quite comfortable for us (2 adults & 2 kids). Although the property is 'ancient', its maintenance is impeccable. Our room was on the upper (verandah) level; it appeared to me that the ground floor level would be better / quieter when the property is fully occupied.

Food: We had lunch, dinner and breakfast... overall, I'd rate the food as Good. Your options are limited -- lunch was Indian and dinner was Continental. They had a set menu and you can choose between Veg and Non-veg. At Rs 500 and 600 per head, the two meals were on the expensive side but you don't have many options too... Breakfast was a buffet set up; apart from cereal and toast, they had just one dish (like a bread pakoda) and egg/omelets.

Service: I would rate them weak on service. It appeared that they were a bit indifferent to what the guests wanted / were doing. For instance, when we were leaving our room (after check-out), the main caretaker just stood on the verandah filing our nails... no good bye or thank you or offering to help with the luggage... that was in quite poor taste. Even when they served us food, the staff seemed more intent on "shall I clear your plate" than checking if we were satisfied with the food or if we wanted anything else.

Overall, the Verandah is a wonderful property that provides a quaint experience of the olden days, allowing you to lose yourself in the pleasant sounds of nature... The only thing that stops me from wholeheartedly recommending this place was the service experience - I just hope that it was a (bad) exception.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your valuable review about The Verandah in the Forest heritage hotel in Matheran.

We are pleased to learn that you had a comfortable stay in the Kotwal suite. Your compliments about the maintenance have been conveyed to the Manager and the housekeeping team.

We have also conveyed your appreciation about the cuisine to the Chef. He will be delighted to incorporate any special requests for breakfast whenever you choose to stay with us next.

At Neemrana, we try to employ as many local people, who are often not educated. We put them through a training program, and then try to empower them to run their local heritage with pride. Please be assured that the service team has been pulled up and given the necessary instructions and training so that feedback like this does not recur in the future.

We thank you for your visit and look forward to welcoming you at our 29 properties across India !

Had visited Matheran in Jun'13 amidst heavy monsoons, and must admit the experience was enhanced multifold due to our stay at this Neemrana property. It has select few rooms, with the old world charm and takes you back to the B.R days. Service is personalized, with the food options mostly skewing towards the english style. Every room has its own speciality and the grand hall with the dining room inside gives a truly palatial feeling. Matheran in itself is a quite place free from any motorized vehicles, and this property being located at the fag end of Matheran is all the more quiet and aloof. A must experience Barr House !

Room Tip: Every room has its own rustic charm and story.

Matheran, a non vehicular town is kept that way to maintain the sanctity of a world that existed a century ago. Heritage properties like the Verandah is a testimony to that very charm. We go there often, to feel Matheran and the Raj days, the way it used to be.
Verandah, service is very personal, as there are few rooms, you must book well in advance. The food is excellent and its a good walk away from most of the tourist spots Buts that what you must do in Matheran, walk and enjoy the place.

I stayed for 2 days, its the best hotel in Matheran. Classier and food is decent and staff and the entire team is very good. Service is very good.

Its maintained well and it belongs to the owners those who have chain of hotels under the name Neemrana. Professionally managed hotel. Situated away from the noise of the town, in the midst of dense forest and very close to the Lake. In Matheran you cant do much. Best place to relax and unwind. I prefer taking long walks to Sunset point, to the lake, other points as well. Some times i dont mind riding on a horse. Its very peaceful and quiet place.

Though best time to go to Matheran is October to February.

First things first. Matheran is over rated. Had it not been for this hotel, I would have come back pretty disappointed with a long weekend ruined. Though the hill station disappointed, the hotel kind of made up for it. Judging by the looks of other hotels around town, I'd say don't even bother thinking about another place if you are planning to go to Matheran. This hotel is a great place to just be. Keep expectations in check and you may even come away feeling you had a little time travel to the Victorian era. What with the high ceilings, four-poster beds, candle-lit dinners around the giant wooden dining table and the beautiful verandah. It is a bit of a pain to get to the hotel from the car-park (we were fleeced by the horse-wallahs). I would recommend travelling light and walking to your destination. That's what we did on our way back. The breakfast is basic, but the lovely 3-course Italian dinner is a gem. Stay on the first floor and enjoy lounging around the verandah.

Room Tip: Stayed at the Chenoy. It is right at the end of the verandah corridor, so minimal disturbance from p...

Located close to the edge of a mountain, adjucent to the charlotte lake and a small waterfall is this beautiful hotel in Matheran. We stayed in the Chenoy room this September and having looked around Matheran in the two days we spent there, might as well say that this is probably the best hotel around.

The rooms are old fashioned but clean, the toilets could have been cleaner.

The lunch was Indian and was average, but the continental dinner was delicious. One has to prebook for lunch and dinner which works out to around $10 each per person. These rates are expensive but then so are the local eateries and the road side maggi stalls.

If you plan on late evening walks around Matheran, ensure you carry a torch and a stick. The road back to the Verandah is not lit in parts and the monkeys might trouble you if you are carrying food.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor open out to a common balcony
