“very nice retreat”
Reviewed October 29, 2011

very calm and quiet. tucked away at a comfortable distance from the marketplace. the colonial old world feeling was absolutely great. very nice view from the "verandah". the service of staff falls short of expectations. not properly trained. specially during service of food. so wont be a heritage taj kind of experience, but again it is much cheaper. we didnt face damp etc in our rooms as mentioned by some of the other reviews. but yes maintainance of the property can be much better

We, 2 adults & 2 kids (under 10 years) stayed in this hotel for 3 nights & we had lot of fun staying here. View from dining area is fabulous and food is excellent (food prices are a tab on higher side). Service was excellent. Recommend this hotel to folks who want to spend time more in forest than in market since this is truely in middle of forest with necessary amenities needed for comfortable stay & want to do a lot of outdoor activities.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are more quite and look out into forest.

We expected a romantic weekend in a pleasantly old-fashioned house.

Unfortunately this place lacks the required maintenance to remain in shape. When we entered the room, we felt immediately that this place is damp. The fungus was spreading all over the wall next to the bed and in the bath room.

The "manager" on site refused to do anything about it. He claimed that he needed permission from Delhi to put us to a different room. Which he never got. However, all the other rooms downstairs were in a similar condition.

We only stayed because we had had to pay in advance and the "manager" refused to refund us so that we go to another place.

For 5500 Rupees (110 USD, 90 Euro) you can do much better.

I sent pictures of this place to Neemrana Hotel Chain to show in what condition it now is, but they did not even feel the need to respond.

Room Tip: The rooms in the upper floor are better (more light, less damp)

Visited the Verandah in the Forest for the 2nd time in September this year. It's still the best Hotel in Matheran and the food is amazing.

The Positives:
It's old world charm and the furniture gives it a look of a lost bungalow from the Raj. The rooms are spacious and elegant. The Location is the best part as it's hidden from the noisy tourists who flock to Matheran. It has a nice verandah to sit and read or just enjoy the nature. There are no TVs in the room and hardly any cell connectivity so one can really be cut off from the city life

The Negatives: There are hardly any sign boards till u reach the main market telling you the location. The rooms while grand are now showing some sign of wear and tear. The service while personalised isnt as prompt like a hotel. Poor cell connectivity might irk people who are addicted to their cell phones. They are very particular about food, one needs to tell in advance if you are eating there and its available only for a limited time.

Food: 9/10
Service: 8/10
Rooms: 8/10
Cell Connectivity: 3/10
Internet: Non-Existent

All in all the best place in Matheran but needs refurbishment

While I was heading towards this hotel, thoughts passed my mind - whether this hotel shall be a value-for-money; & now I am delighted to say - "Yes it is!"
Verandah, much into the interiors of Matheran - Nature & History spell their magic on the hotel
Kudos to the staff - they make your stay fabulous,
Blissful Peace all around; Nature sheds its beauty on this heritage hotel - untouched by pollution & likes.
During my stay, it drizzled - & this invited the clouds to actually enter The Verandah in full-fervour - I & my family, enjoyed the sumptuous Pakodas.
The staff is highly supportive, Kudos to them!
Food is great too!
The only drawback is, it is too much in in the interior - almost 5 Kms. trek from Dasturi Car Parking - Neemrana waala's can start an escorted to&fro transport service (by horse/rikshaw) & add the fare to their tariff.
It was a perfect holiday with my family. All in all, I shall love to visit The Verandah in the Forest again!

Room Tip: Rooms on the first-floor get a direct access to The Verandah.

The principal attraction of Matheran for me is the 'no motor vehicles' policy. Thus it is free of the sound of motor traffic and honking horns that pollutes so much of modern India. The other side of this is if course that you have to find other means to reach your hotel from the carpark. The toy train can take you part of the way, or there are horses to ride, handcarts to be dragged around in, or if you are neither lazy nor infirm, good old Shanks' pony. (Porters will help you with your luggage if you brought more than you can personally handle.)
The Verandah may be the most distant accommodation from the end of the motor road, so you pay for its seclusion in sweat or bruises. The spot is perfect, however, surrounded by mature deciduous forest with views across the ghats.

The building itself has been restored with a light touch - nothing too gaudy or modern ruins the atmosphere - no startling colours, no piped music, no TV. (No Gin or wine either. Beer is available but if you fancy a tipple, bring your own.)
Our room (rooms - we had a space bigger than many London flats) we wonderful. High ceilings, tasteful antiques, generous bathroom with all the bits and bobs you expect a hotel to lay on (except a bath - sadly this trend is inescapable).

The staff - enthusiastic, willing but sadly handicapped by poor training, were always on hand but never obtrusive. Oddly the management were conspicuous by their absence for most of our stay. Tea on the eponymous verandah is an event in itself, with silver vessels, proper cubed sugar and a monkey cabaret to watch.

A walk in the forest to admire the cliff-top views was a source of, in turn, delight, appetite and frustration. Why are India's beautiful places ruined by piles of trash? What do these idiots think happens to their sweet wrapper of Bisleri bottle when they drop it? Perhaps they like the way it looks and imagine you will too, but more likely the existence of anybody but themselves never crosses their ignorant minds.

Supper was an event. All guests share a giant dining table. We were served a 'Western' style four course meal that was honestly a little too ambitious for the chef and his ingredients. The quality was utterly eclipsed by the Indian food served on the verandah for lunch. Best to stick with what you're good at.

Oh, and breakfast - that was pretty good too. Eggs, toast, jams, tea, coffee. All in wonderful plenty.

Thoroughly recommended - I shall return. Maybe I'll catch a higher-up and tell him about the way the bathroom sink drains across the floor and soaks your feet - if he isn't still in hiding.

This is the place if you want to be a time traveller. If peace & solitude is what you are yearning for, look no further.
We also enjoyed the food. The place is a bit pricy but it helps in many ways. No TV, No A/c, no mobile its great. Imagine not being disturbed by a single phone call or the sounds from TV at just a few hours drive.......would love to go to the Verandah again and again

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The paths once cleared by the British in the forests of Matheran, making it the last British hill station have acquired a new identity as the place where Bombay’s movers and shakers which include filmstars and businessmen come to spend a few quiet and peaceful days.Perched atop the Sahyadri ranges, Matheran is Asia’s only pedestrian hill resort. Chug up in a toy train, trot, or arrive in a palanquin, past gigantic mansions built by the British, the Parsis, and the Bohras. The Verandah in the Forest was the second house to be built on the isolated Western Ghats, by Captain Barr. Now, with every facility in place, it is reputed to be second to none! Indeed, the nobility of the proportions of The Verandah bring civilizational honour to the Sahyadri ranges. Lounge like never before in this verandah of your dreams. Read under the highest domestic ceiling you would have known in the salon – 12 metres/35 feet high. Stroll down to Charlotte Lake. Or take longer walks with a picnic basket. Relish the local cuisines. Heave your chest, muscle your calves, take all the oxygen back in your lungs. Link your planet with your own two feet.Find space for more space in your mind. Or lose yourself to find yourself anew.Long after you return, you will wonder who would have dared to sprawl out such a tree-home space in such spell-binding wilderness? ... more   less
