I have visited Matheran earlier but this time (April'14) it was special being with wife. So I decided to go to nice hotel which is good for family. There are multiple choice at Marheran but Gujarat Bhavan is best among them. Be it tariff, Place, Room or Food every thing is nice. On top of it staff is very humble and supportive. Hotel is as good as shown in photos above. Umesh bhai who is caretaking the premised is also very good person. Special is FOOD which I believe you will not get anywhere in Matheran of this level. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner; every thing was nice and with multiple options.
Lunch was Thali and Dinner was Buffet. Both distinct in way but delightful.
Hoping to visit again.

I have been to Gujarat Bhavan in 2009 & that time was my first stay, this was my 2nd visit & i was joined by my in laws, the visit was in the month of March (2014)

Gujarat Bhavan is the best place in Matheran to stay you get a personalized service / staff is very co-operative as well as you can find the kind of privacy you are looking for, the best thing which attracts me to Gujarat Bhavan is their food which they serve its the during the day (i.e. starting from B/F to Dinner), my in laws also enjoyed their stay

And finally we stayed in Gujarat Bhavan. At the price we paid we really had every paisa vasool. Value for money and specially very good place for vegetarians and Jains. Those who want to live is safe family groups , non alcoholics. Staff and management is also very courteous. Food was a treat and mouthwatering. So much variety on dinner tables that many items v cud not even reach at. Then every night there was some entertainment shows.

They can improve further by providing Jet spray/ hygiene spray in each toilets, having a small disco floor near pool, better upkeep of pool, and pool side toilet. But whole stay over all was a great experience where we found guests too mixed with each other smiling unlike we see snobbish rich in 5 star stays.

Had a really nice experience at this place. It is reasonably priced. It has all the amenities which are required. Excellent food and room service. The whole place is good value for money! Is full most of the times so it better to check the availability from before.

Our visit from 5 mar 2014 to 8 mar 2014 in two A/c. deluxe rooms. Cost for midweek stay was Rs. 3000/- for double occupancy with all food right from bed T/Coffee etc. to break fast; lunch; t/coffee and dinner. In between you pay extra for what you want. The kitchen is alive. For Friday to Sunday the the aboe rate is Rs.3800/-. There are fixed timings for the food. Better take a note. Tea/Coffee/Milk in the morning served in thermos in the room. Then breakfast in the dining room at 8-30 or so with daily change and served hot. Lunch between about 1 to 2-30. Tea/coffee/milk in the room at 4-30 pm. Dinner in the dinning room from 8-30 or so to 10-00 pm. There is an open air swimming pool well maintained. At Matheran city people miss the internet signals not regularly available and mobile networks may not be functioning or erratcially functioning. When we went even the MTNL landlines were not working.
We went from Ghatkopar east to Neral by private taxi Rs.2400/- plus the toll taxes both ways even if it is a drop. The local taxi operators who take people from Neral Rly. Station to the hill top at Dasturi - Aman lodge chage Rs.50/- per seat with 7 passengers crammed - three in the front and four behind. One can hire the full taxi and pay Rs.350/-. It takes about 30 min. to reach the top. All vehicles have to stop at Dasturi-Aman Lodge and there is a big parking lot. From here Matheran rly. station is about 2.5 km. and one can walk along the track, or sit in man driven cycle or take a horse ride. Cooly are available at this point. Last Dec. the authorities have started a shuttle hill train service between Dasturi-Aman Lodge and Matheran Rly. stn. There is an entry tax of Rs. 50/- per person. There is another way to travel from Neral Rly Station (base) to the hill top Dasturi point and that is toy or hill train. It is nearly 2 hrs. 10-15 min. winding its way up through the forest. But many times only skeleton services are available as engine is not working or some reason. During rains these trains stop plying. Even in March there was cold up there and one wore hot clothing. During rains most of Matheran empties out as there is no much tourism though it is most beautiful during rains. I think the best time to go would be beginning of rains say first week of June. Bargain and negotiate with coolies; cycle pullers; horsewallahs. I would highly recommend Gujarat Bhavan - Mr. Bharatbhai the Manager, Mr. Umeshbhai Dubal resident of Mumbai and owner who stays at the Bhavan on weekdays Fridays to Sundays. Their email and phone nos. are available on the internet. Search on Gujarat Bhavan, Matheran.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing East so that the rising sun rays wake you up inside the room. Beware of monkeys...

Matheran it self is beautiful and in this place we found Gujarat Bhavan .. Very nice place to stay and enjoy. Excellent Food and great Room service is being provided. Our Experience on 01/02/2014 and 02/02/2014 remains memorable. Swimming Pool and Pool side dinner is like a dream. I think with sight seeing and Horse riding one should also enjoy Lodging and boarding.

WE stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and it was a very good experience.
Its walking distance from the Matheran Railway station - about 15min.

The premises are well spread and not at all cramped. We chose to stay in the Non AC room (no.8)
which was comfortable (not luxurious or posh), but the deluxe rooms must be luxurious i guess.
They happily changed the room for us, when we were not happy with the room earlier alloted room.

Secondly, this hotel does not play loud music everyday, like the other hotels (which is too loud to let others sleep).Their noise did not disturb us though.

The only time this hotel played music was on Saturday, when they served pool side dinner (which we loved)..and the music was not too loud, and the stopped it well in time!!

The best part is the food.. lunch has gujarathi thali...2 veg, 2 dal, 2 sweets, rice, chapati and 1 pulse preparation (usal), etc..very tasty and they are eager to serve us which gives us a "cared for" feeling. I loved the dinners...chole bhature, chat, soup, gujarathi kadhi chichadi, pulao, 2 veg preparations, pav bhaji, bajra bhakri with jaggery...we had all of this (spread over our stay)..but the food is one very plus point of this hotel.

Will definately stay here on my next visit to Matheran. Happy with the service too...
Thanks for making our holiday memorable.
