“Awesome picnic spot...”

Dubare Elephant Camp
Reviewed January 6, 2014 via mobile

A forest camp on the banks of the river Kaveri in the district of Kodagu, in Karnataka. It's a perfect picnic spot where you can enjoy still water river rafting. Try crossing the river on foot by walking over the rocks making certain areas really shallow. The low current of the river kaveri would give you a mesmerising feeling. The elephant activities get over by 12 so try to be there early. On holidays, the place can get really crowded....

The road from Madakeri to the Dubari Forest reserve is god awful, but you soon forget the ride when you arrive by the banks of the Cauvery River and look across to the other side to see the elephants. With kiddies with us, we had to have a snack and drinks first, and then got in a very long queue to board the "shuttle boats" over to see the elephants. Cheap tickets but the boats are relatively small and only three were in service from different spots along the riverbank. (****NB.. keep your ticket, as on the return boat ride you were asked to show it and it had to be for the same boat you came over on). It was very hot and humid so we joined the queue in the shaded area and waited 20 minutes or so before we managed to cross. Another long queue formed to climb the loading platform for the elephant ride. There were four elephants in service and only twice in the two hours we were there did I see an elephant go down to the river to bathe and to be washed.
However, the elephent ride was great and was a hit with my grandson.

Arrive at the Camp parking by 8 AM and take a 2 min boat ride across the river to the forest area. This is an absolute treat for kids and nature lovers. You can bathe elephants in the stream, feed them cucumbers and dry feed, click pictures with them and also take a small elephant ride for a small fee. On our way back by noon, we skipped taking the boat and instead crossed the river on foot with scores of other people which was a fun thing too.

We were late for a day-trip to this place so missed the Elephant bathing experience, but rest was simply superb !! The place is run by JLR and as expected, they are good at what they do. Great location on the side of River Kaveri, Elephants around, some nice cottages for stay and food is excellent! We had very good time frolicking in Kaveri waters, just relaxing on the Hammock, Elephant ride, Coracle ride was superb. Overall a memorable experience and highly recommended. If you do not want to be in long queues for everything, just boot Day Trip with JLR(~1200 per person) and that include lunch and evening tea. Better still to just book stay there.
