“Paradise in jungle”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

Its a beautiful and calm place on the banks of river Kabini and all of my friends enjoyed it fully. The resort itself has patches of forest inside it along with colonial style bunglow, river side cottages and royal rooms. The place is squeaky clean and staff is very courteous(even though government runs it). I stayed in river facing cottages and that's definitely the best accommodation in this resort because river is at stone throw distance from your balcony and you can hear it right from your bed. They also take tourist for jungle & boat safari but since we went during rainy season we could not see any animal apart from deers. If you want to enjoy safari you should go in summers because that's the time when animals come to river and you can easily spot them.
Only thing I didn't like about this place is food, which was almost tasteless and the chicken they served us was undercooked. For the money they charge I was expecting delicious spread of delicacies so I was disappointed. Overall VERY expensive resort but if you can afford it, you should go and experience the tranquility.

Room Tip: Choose river facing cottages if you like to stay in resort for longer time

We really enjoyed staying at jungle lodges and resorts. We did the booking through the Bangalore office, made the full payment in advance and we chose tented accommodation. We found it a tad pricey to be honest. The location is fantastic as our tented cottage faced Kabini river. The food is served in a rough hut made of bamboo, called Gholghar and it has a good spread of vegetarian dishes. There isn't much to do in the lodge itself, the most awaited activity was the safari drive and also the coracle ride. The safari is a must do, though we didn't see the Tiger like we saw in jungle reterat wayanad, we saw some elephants, hogs, spotted deer and civets. We took the Coracle ride, it is fun, but if you are looking for wildlife, I'd suggest you take the motor boat as it covers much more distance. Coracle ride is "just" for the experience. The lack of carnevore sightings was attributed to the fact that it rained just before the safari drive. It did look very commercial for a wildlife lodge, most of the rooms were full and that meant that there were a lot of other guests, some with little children, so it was a it noisy at times.
It is a beautiful lodge and gives you a stay in a serene environment. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a comfortable stay. But don't look for wildlife from the lodge it self because it is set in a village and not in the middle of the jungle.

Room Tip: Weekdays are perhaps best, to avoid the weekend crowd.

Jungle Lodges , Commonly known as JLR is the only option if you are looking for forest safari's in Karnataka, Even though if you stay in any other resorts you may need to come back to JLR for Jungle safari.

Jungle Lodges Kabini River Lodge, Run by Govt of Karnataka is a lovely place to stay and also for safari, This forest is know for Leopard's and not just that you will also happen to see other wildlife sightings over there.

Coming back to JLR, Kabini, This is one of the best JLR properties, Location is the best, You have a backwater just behind the resort, Rooms(tent/cottage) is lovely with neat and clean, Service is also great over here.

Food is amazing, It is always a buffet and one will enjoy the varieties over here.

A much recommended place.

Excellent place. Amazed by this Government ran lodge facility right on the banks of Kabini reservoir.

The food served their Gol Ghar block is very good and tasty. The restaurant and service is clean and hygienic.

As the JLR is said to be operating on Mysore Raja's hunting bungalow the other blocks are also made like the original Viceroy bungalow. As safari was my prime interest during the trip I preferred a room which is furnished in a colonial style with tall wood finished roof and windows. Though the windows are meshed due to the green environment you can expect some mosquitos there.

All safaris to the Rajiv Gandhi National Park is operated only by JLR, and the tariff is inclusive of a morning and evening safari with a very decent meal plan.

The entire staff is very pleasing and the drives was good, though the timing restrictions from wildlife authorities is too limited. The guide who was with us was cooperative and informative.

Thanks for the teamwork there.

This property has its contrasts. It used to be the hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Mysore, and is run by the Govt today. Hence, what should you expect from it ...

Interestingly, despite the above, the team is doing an outstanding job !!! The place scores a 5/5 on every parameter (except food), which I why I have pulled the overall score down to 4.

Not only do they have amazing options for you on things to do - unlimited safari, boating, movie shows, bon fires etc, but they also have the most courteous and helpful team with them who really make an effort to send you back with a smile.

It's a place definitely worth checking out.

I have tried to capture every thing about the lodge in the title, and they have not been mentioned in any particular order. There are plenty of reviews about this property, so I have tried to limit my review to a couple of aspects that I have liked about this place, which I feel is important. I have classified my review into four sections wildlife , the lodge, food and what to do. As you can see its very basic stuff and hope you can benefit from what I have experienced.

WILDLIFE : The place is all about wildlife and that's the reason its difficult to get an accommodation unless one books early. As the place has a healthy population of cats, birds and elephants, the wildlife sighting is better and hence the popularity. Among all the properties of Jungle Lodges, most probably Kabini presents the best chance to see one of the larger cats.

THE LODGE : Kabini is among the best properties of Jungle lodges, I am told that it was well frequented in the past by the Maharajas as well as folks of the British Raj. The bungalows are fabulous and so are the rooms as well as the tents. Clean and having all the amenities that one would require in the wild.

FOOD : Very basic Indian food, which would please both the vegetarians as well as the carnivores . You could also unwind with a mug of beer after a hard evening in the wild. Breakfast is quite a spread, other than the usuals such as cereals, egg to order and bread , you also get a variety of Indian breakfast choices. My verdict is you get basic Indian food which is tasty.

WHAT TO DO : There are three basic activities, the jungle trips , the boat ride and the trek. I have not done the trek so cannot comment on it. The trips in the jeep is what you would generally do as it provides the best chance to see the wild. You will be accompanied by a Jungle lodges personnel who has a very good knowledge of the forests and who can help you with identifying different species of birds. I would also recommend the boat trips, which you can take both in the evening or in the morning. Though not a favourite among the hardcore wildlife enthusiasts, we recommend it because on one of the trips we were able to see a tiger coming down to the water bank and I am told you always get to see the elephants on the river banks.

The review would not be complete and just, If I do not write about the staff of Jungle Lodge who do an exemplary job of making you feel comfortable.

Majority of the people who visit Jungle Lodges are serious wildlife enthusiasts and they know their birds and their cats, so you benefit a lot by striking up a conversation. Another word of advice take a good camera preferably with a telephoto lens( you can rent them in Bangalore), the point and shoot just does not help. Lastly get the right set of clothes depending on the time of the year and try and avoid bright colors such as red.

I went to Kabini with my family in April 2013. Had a lovely time. Food is good. Lovely view of the River Kabini from here. The safari is awesome. It's nice to be so close to nature and be part of it in a way. Their naturalists are really good and help you in spotting some rare birds and animals. The staff are courteous and helpful. Rooms are bare minimum but it still gives you the comfort. Love to go here as often as possible.
