Saraighat Bridge is the first rail-cum-road bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Assam . It was opened to traffic in 1963 by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Saraighat Bridge over the river Brahmaputra, which is the vital link between North East region and the rest of the country, has completed 50 years of its existence . The experts gave the opinion that the structure and all the pillars of the bridge are in sound condition and the bridge would be able to serve the North East region of the country for years to come.

A pretty long bridge and it looked to me a bit dry. The pass over the bridge was fabulous, as I was able to enjoy the ride on the train.

'It's just like any other bridge'

To know more, this is the first rail-road bridge constructed in 1962 over Brahmaputra river, one of the mightiest rivers in Asia. History says the Battle of Saraighat (a place in Guwahati city) was fought here between Mughal Empire and Ahom Kingdom since the river narrows down at this location. This bridge further gained significance for the reason that it connects all the North-East Indian states to the rest of India.

All said, it is just like any other bridge. Moreover, the road lanes are narrow causing traffic congestion and jams that would remain for long time, especially in nights.

At 1.3 km, it's long by normal standards, and that's probably something that will interest someone who visits here for the first time. Yes, the view is beautiful from the bridge, both when you are travelling by train or by road.

It is not a tourist spot but a bridge that you will cross while going from one side of Guwahati to another or going from upper assam to lower assam and vice versa. The scenery is calm, peaceful and serene.
