Barefoot at Havelock
Ranked #1 of 13 Hotels in Havelock Island
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 25, 2014

Dear TripAdvisorCommunity!!!

We all follow the same principle: We write reviews either if the place is great or if the place is a threat tu humanity ;-)
Well, let me tell you: In this case, this place is a TREAT to humanity!

Where to start...?

Well, Barefoot at Havelock first of all managed EVERYTHING for our trip PERFECTLY. The communication before and during the booking, the professional approach to make our trip and arrival as well as the departure as good as possible. It was - especially if you experience other services in India - incredibly good.

The most painful thing about Havelock is reaching there. We came from Delhi since we live here since 3,5 years, so we took a flight stopping over at Chennai before landing in Port Blair. From there Barefoot transfer services (perfect!) brought us to the Gov. Ferry, managed our tickets, then we took the Gov. Ferry (really bad...) for 2,5 hours and again from the Havelock port to the Resort we had a wonderfully organized transfer.
So, Barefoot is doing all they CAN, but flights and ferries - this they cannot make more comfortable to the guests - unfortunately... In total, we had a close to 9 hour trip...

Okay, now the resort.

ROOM
We stayed in the A/C Tented Cottages. They are very nice and more than enough. The ground is solide concrete, the tent is of good quality and huge, the open bathroom concept is very nicely resolved, A/C was working perfectly, etc. No complaints. And we slept amazingly well. Of course: No intercom, no internet, no TV... But WHO needs THAT over there??? The only thing about the A/C Tented Cottages is the location. Although it will take you only 5 to 7 minutes walk to the reception and restaurant area, it feels a bit far. Especially in the dark. You get some torches, because otherwise you really do not see anything, and you might meet accidentally some friends on the way (lizards, snakes, etc.). Since the walking path is amongst the nature, you can have these experiences... But nothing happened to us. Animals usually prefer to escape and hide. Our snakes were small and disappeared quickly.

RESTAURANT
Nice, cozy, clean and a superbe food! All the food we had was great, and we mostly had continental styles. Lobster was great, prawn pasta on the first day amazing, etc. The waiters are a crazily-good team and it is fun to go for breakfast and dinner there. The only thing: Out of 3 dinners, during the last 2 dinners they were out of prawns and also we could not try the great choice of pizzas they normally offer because only 1 guy is trained for pizza baking and he was at his wedding. These things disappointed us a bit...

BAR
Well, small, nice and cutely done. But: No alcohol. John, the main Service Manager there, told us that their license was due for liquor and that they are waiting for getting it granted. But people: My friends went there 1 year back and got the same story. So, no alcohol. Of course, Barefoot Team offers you to buy anything you want for you at the nearest market and then you can consume it in your room, but well, that`s not the point of a nice cocktail at the beach bar.

BEACH
No words...I do really not know HOW to describe that...IT IS THE BEST BEACH I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! And yes, I have been to a LOT of beaches in my life. It looks like Maldives but with a wider stretch of white sand, more natural, totally not touristic and it even has some waves, so you do not get bored in barely non-moving waters. This beach is a delight and for sure I know now why it has been amongst the world's best beaches...

SPECIAL INCIDENTS
As most of you might already know, in April 2010 a salty (saltwater crocodile) of around 4 to 5 metres length, attacked an American tourist while she was snorkeling with her Indo-American boyfriend at Neil's Cove. The lady died, they found her body and the crocodile 48 hours later. One year later, at Elephants Beach, a fisherman spotted again a salty. Now, Neil's Cove is a part of the beach which is only 400 metres walking distance to the right if you walk along the beach. It is a beautiful spot. The problem is that we were not allowed to go there because just one week before our arrival (meaning AGAIN in April, 4 years later), a salty had been spotted by some guests at Neil's Cove. So, the guards were always keeping the people away from this beach, we were advised not to go there, especially not for a swim, and sign boards were placed all over the resort and on the beach. That was a bit scary we must admit. But we did not see the crocodile and we had no incident ourselves. Just be aware of it and take care a bit when you snorkel around in waters which you do not know and where nobody else is...

TRIPS
The Barefoot team is surely one of the best resort staff teams imaginable. They are so nice and the yhelp you also with tips for trips. Elephant Beach, beach no. 5, etc. They tell you what you can do, what is worth it and they arrange you a two-wheeler super quickly to explore the island. And: It is fun! Very less traffic, very simple road network, nice people. And diving!!! If you are certified, go for some nice deep diving spots at very affordable prices with very good diving professionals. If you are not, then start diving here! It is affordable and the team is just great.

OVERALL
Overall we regret that we did not have more than these 2,5 days. We would recommend everybody to go for 4 to 5 days. It relaxes you so much!!! If you look for Hilton, Marriott & Co. and party zones and malls, etc. then you are WRONG at Havelock. If you want to enjoy nature, the quiet surroundings and stunning beaches, then this is the place for you. Havelock won our hearts and we will hopefully go back one day.
Thanks to all the Barefoot Team members, thanks Havelock for existing on this planet!

Love the Radhanagar beach, and its so blissfully unconnected! The food at the restaurant is awesome, and the beaches are to die for! No internet or phone connection in most parts of the resort , and loved the privacy on the clear clear beaches!
The beach is unbelivably clean, and the staff super friendly.

WOW Experience. The place is just so picture perfect in terms of the exquisite natural landscape and the access to the beach.

There is no wifi or intercom or television and no room service. You actually get to experience a jungle kind of feeling. There is no lights between the cottages or the path to the restaurant - they gave us torches.

The food at the restaurant was very good. The rooms are well maintained, we stayed in a Nicobari AC cottage, which was very spacious. There can be mosquitoes in the evening, so carrying repellents is a good idea. In the room they have provided mosquito nets, but repellents is recommended so that you can be out in the evening.

The beach is just 2 minutes away and the landscape between the resort and the beach is breath taking. You get to access a near private part of the long beach as the public access to the beach is some distance away and most of the crowd does not walk so far.

They provided mats and beach towels - which is just so convenient.

Also recommended is that you plan for minimum of two nights at the resort - the feeling of waking upto the sounds of Birds is just too great.

Room Tip: You need the AC cottages as the weather can be sultry. Nicobari Cottage is good for family of 3 - mo...

to start with barefoot is the best place to stay in the whole of andamans and if you are going to andaman for a holiday i would suggest havelock is the only place worth staying. do not waste your money and time on port blair and neil island. barefoot has a very nice jungle resort feel with a beach in the vicinity. the bar is to die for. very small with only 36 people space but the feel is just perfect. although the food is not up to the mark but when in havelock you can have all your meals at the full moon cafe. and once at barefoot do not miss their scuba or snorkelling. and for anyone who checks in at the hotel do take a bike on hire or else you would be ripped of to travel with horrible rates. from hotel point a very comfortable stay.

Room Tip: for people who need AC THE ANDAMAN VILLAS or the NICOBARI COTTAGE. Else without AC explorerd can tak...

AN ALMOST PERFECT HOLIDAY
The beach, the food, the sand, the water, the environment and no mobile networks & Wi-Fi and above all hassle free travel with unmatched hospitality made our holiday with Barefoot a near perfect holiday. I had planned my holiday more than six months back. We reached Port Blair by Air India from Kolkata early in the morning around 9.00 am on 24 march. From the airport we went to Chatham saw mill, from there we went to Corbyn’s cove beach where we had coconut water and bought hats to avoid prolonged exposure to the scorching heat and harmful rays of the sun, then we went to an aquarium after that we had our lunch at Annapurna hotel, which was quite good and cheap for vegetarian food (thali system). Then we went to the jetty to board Makruzz for Havelock at 2.00 pm. The journey took around 2 hours. It was quite comfortable with onboard entertainment system and a small counter where we can buy food or drinks, the seats were also quite comfortable.

Havelock is one of the main attractions of Andaman, without visiting it a holiday to Andaman WILL never be complete. We stayed two nights at the Havelock Barefoot resort which is very near to the Radhanagar Beach and is only a minutes’ walk from the reception counter. You can relax the whole day at the beach. The one thing which I find very pleasing about the beach is its calm atmosphere and its background of green floras with so many big tall evergreen trees. This beach has been branded the best beach in Asia.
The next day we did snorkeling at the Elephant beach which was awesome. But I found the 30 minute trekking to the beach quite strenuous (mainly because I had a 2 inch cut injury on my left foot). The scheduled sea walk at the elephant beach was canceled when we went due to an accident some months back for which money was refunded before we left Port Blair.
The best part was the scuba diving arranged with Barefoot scuba in open water. With their expert briefing, demonstration and meticulous care it is safe even for non swimmers for I also do not know how to swim properly. There you can also go for certification courses in diving. In Barefoot scuba fooding and lodging is also there. You can also relax near the beach on the beach chairs and hanging net beds.
My stay at the AC tent house of Barefoot was fantastic. It is quite a value for money. The tents are actually thatched huts on a raised platform with tents inside the huts. It has a verandah of 5by 15 feet, a spacious bedroom of 15 by 15 feet, another dressing room of about 7 by 15 feet and a semicircular bathroom with a diameter of about 15 feet. The bed is quite large and it is prominent from the fact that on the first day four of us slept on the same bed.
The minibar (a small fridge) at the tent is also filled with a lot of cookies, chips, chocolates, coca-cola and many other items which we enjoyed.
One thing which I fail to understand is why they are not providing tooth paste which was anticipated.
After sunset the whole place is either dark or dimly lit with no streetlamps and you feel you are in the middle of a jungle. The walk for dinner from our tent to the dinning hut was about 150 m on the kutcha road through tall coconut trees with eerie sounds of insects and occasional rustling sounds were a bit scary. Occasionally you see other people flashing their way with dimly lit torchlights. It is good that they supplied torchlights. Actually you get an adventurous feeling throughout the whole stay.
Minimum of two nights are recommended at Havelock. Our guide Marshall took good care of us.
At Port Blair due to change of plans we stayed only one night instead of three nights. The change of plan proved quite costly for me. But Mr. Karthick of Barefoot helped me in his capacity. At Ross Island you can almost touch the deers and see peacocks apart from other historical attractions. We had to skip the trip to Viper Island, North Bay and Mount Harriet. At night, we visited the cellular jail and watched the sound and light show on Andaman’s dark history. After the show everybody who watched it will think how this paradise on Earth could have such a dark history.
At Port Blair we stayed at Nest in a sea facing premium room. Though it is cheap, neat & clean with calm environment you get the feeling that you are staying at somebody’s place and you don’t get that holiday mood.
Overall we enjoyed our choice and had a memorable time.

Room Tip: Al the ac tented rooms are good.

I love this place.

Location- wow. The beach is really long and clean. There were hardly any people (especially if you walked a bit further away from the resort) and the sea was amazingly clear and warm.

We stayed in a Nicobari Cottage, it was really large and very comfortable. I am super impressed with what they have managed to achieve in such a remote place. I really like all the small touches like tea/coffee in the rooms and the super effective a/c. Btw- I had some phone signal and could send/ receive sms. I've traveled extensively and I personally think this place is pretty luxury (but obviously within the limitations of the beautiful rainforest setting).

The staff really make this place. They were all really efficient and friendly (and everyone went the extra mile to make our stay special). Our visit coincided with Holi and it was great to see the staff and guests interact.

The excursions and ayurvedic centre were great too.

I will be back soon.

Room Tip: Nicobari cottage!! Also, make sure you get Barefoot to arrange your travel from Port Blair. It is to...
