“Service Sucks, older facility.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

when you open the door to the bathroom the door hits the toilet (supppper small) The first room the door wouldn't even open the door was swollen shut. Avoid the first floor it is below ground and very musty smelling. Got moved to 2nd floor, Great view off the balcony (paid extra for it) when the neighbors weren't smoking pot we could leave them open for fresh air. No bathroom supplies were in the room. AC works nice when needed, was a little loud. Very thin walls...

Grounds were well kept, but very few trails, with very few points of interest. Lobby Building is a very woodsy design with great big windows. All of the facilities seemed to be in good shape except for normal wear and tear.

The food in the restaurant was so, so, the service sucked, after we got the to go box when we were finished with dinner. She went back to have a nice long conversation with the other servers, so we had to yell to get her attention and ask for the bill.

Breakfast was not much better.

No I don't think we will be back.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the first floor...

THE GOOD STUFF --

We stayed in Cabin #8 and (aside the bugs mentioned below) we were really impressed with the inside of the cabin.
- Room-y/Comfortable Living Room space with TV
- The Kitchen was decent (a few pots, pans, skillets, utensils, etc. were provided)
- The beds are comfy and both bedrooms have flat screen TV's/basic channels
- We had a handicapped accessible cabin so the shower was a bit room-y as well.
- Small screened in porch area w/picnic table so you can eat "outside" w/o bugs flying around
- There are a few decent amenities/activities at the Lodge
- The lodge is only about a 3-5 minute walk from the cabins
- Each cabin has its own fire pit area with picnic tables

THE BAD STUFF:
- While the lodge offers some amenities/activities, most things are pretty rundown and old. Tennis courts and basketball courts have lots of broken concrete and very tall weeds growing from the courts; the ping-pong paddles' need to get replaced, etc.

- The restaurant part of the Lodge is pretty awful aside from the price. If you're staying in a cabin, don't bother with it. Either shop at the Wal-Mart in Portsmouth and make meals in your cabin, or eat-out a few times in Portsmouth downtown area (25-30min drive).

- They offer Geocaching equipment rental, but it's a waste of time and very inaccurate, not worth the money.

- When we first got to our cabin we had to kill about 10-20 bugs/spiders, but that's to be expected staying in a cabin vs. hotel room.

Overall, we had a great time in the 2 days we spent there; swimming, shuffle board, ping-pong, horseback riding, hiking, and making s'mores around the fires at night. We would definitely go back!

Room Tip: TIP#1: We had lots of spiders and a few big bugs (like caterpillars and daddy long legs) in Cabin 8...

I would like to thank you for your feedback on your experience while visiting Shawnee. Feedback from our guest is the best way for us to improve upon what we do. Please note that the outdoor recreational activities will see a spring cleanup and be ready for the summer season as well as the indoor amenities. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

We stayed in the Lodge for 2 nights and were very pleasantly surprised by the room, by the lodge, by the staff's friendliness and helpfulness, and by the food in the dining room. (Warning: The portions in the dining room are large!) Both the AC and the mini-fridge were kindly turned on ahead for us. While we didn't use the lodge's pools, tennis courts, etc. available, we found its location for exploring Shawnee State Park and Forest, as well as the city of Portsmouth, convenient and peaceful. The one problem the lodge seems to be having is with the plumbing. Our room was on the third floor, where there should have been no draining issues, but the sinks were a bit slow to drain. It's a beautiful place, and we plan to come back.

We have never been to Shawnee lodge before and it seemed to look pretty from the photos online. The lodge was clean and the employees were friendly, but there were a few things we didn't like. One problem is this is located in the middle of nowhere so you depend on the lodge for activities and food. This lodge has 1 dining room and an attached bar area. The menu is simple, so you dont have many choices and its so expensive. The food isn't great and includes things like pot roast and hamburgers. The room was basically clean but the bathroom was awful. It was old and rusty and the shower drain insert was sitting on the side of the tub because the whole thing was rusted out. Not a pleasant thing to look at. The grout was even browned and the bottom of the shower was discolored. I wanted to show them how bleach works. The rooms are also too dark and the beds were like sleeping on cement slabs. Totally uncomfortable and my back hurt from them.. The maid service did very minimal servicing in the room. We stayed in a family room with bunks. even though the room sleeps 6, they would leave us 2 towels. it was ridiculous. we had to ask every day for enough towels for our family. They also allow smoking which was awful for us. The people in the room above us smoked heavily out on their balcony and it drifted down into our room. It was really bad. The indoor pool was old and shallow and not pleasant. The hot tub was also old and very small. It was so full of chlorine we couldn't stay in for more than a few min at a time. It burned our eyes so bad. The outdoor pool was nice but they allow the campers to use it and that brought in a lot of unsavory people. There was also a tiny game room. We spent some money in there and got bored quickly because they only had a few games in it. We packed up and left early and went elsewhere. It wasn't worth the money. In all, the lodge was acceptable but not a place I would care to return to. Food was boring and way too expensive and there isn't much to do there.

Room Tip: Bring your own food and a bottle of bleach. Seriously. Don't stay on the weekends.

This was a new experience for us on our road trip. We booked a cabin instead of the lodge itself and enjoyed every minute. Check in was fast and friendly. The lodge area itself has a relaxing lounge area, small gift shop, indoor swimming, restaurant and bar area. Also has a games room for kids and laundry area. The restaurant is not great, service and food is below average with any food ordered on the two occasions was over cooked. Out door pool is great with a good kids pool and life guard on main pool. Also good for disabled as the pool had a lift for disabled to be lowered into pool.
The cabin was approx a 2 min drive from lodge back into the forest. We had number 11 which was at the end of the road. All cabins come with outside tables and BBQ and a supply of wood. Further supplies can be obtained from reception.
The cabin was very clean with good supply of bedding and towels. 3 tv's, one in each bedroom as well as lounge. Bathroom was good size and clean. Beds comfortable. This was a great idea for a family. Kids have room to have their area as well as adults having their own.
As for the park itself. Down by the lake we could hire boats, motor boats to canoe. The park offers so much for the outside life style. One thing I will make people aware of. We came across our first rattle snake.
If you enjoy the peace and quiet, please go and enjoy. I will be back here someday.

We decided on the Shawnee State Park Lodge for two nights on our 5 day tour of state park lodges in Ohio. Very pleasant check-in and someone promptly called our room after we arrived to make sure everything was ok. The room was rustic, but cozy and our two children loved the bunk beds. The best part of our stay was the huge outdoor pool with a diving board and it was so humid that we spent most of our time swimming. The kids loved the indoor pool as well, but it looks like it needs a little more upkeep. Too bad the hot tub wasn't working, but that didn't seem to bother us. We also liked the fact that the outdoor pool was open til 9 and the indoor pool til 11. My husband and son love to play tennis so they took full advantage of the courts while my 3 year old and I checked out the playground. As I mentioned, it was very humid the two days we were there so we only briefly checked out the lake area, but decided not to do any trails, although we had planned some hiking.
The only dissapointment was with the bar. Our first night at the lodge we opted for a late and light dinner so we were happy to find pizza on the bar menu. Thank God they had bowls of complimentary popcorn because we waited 45 minutes only to have our server tell us the chef had burned our first pizza and another one was being made. Our server was overly apologetic, but when the chef appeared he seemed to just laugh about it ( yeah, right, especially when it's almost 10 pm and your two young children are getting antsy wondering where dinner is!) However, the lodge was gracious enough to give us a fair discount on our dinner. Breakfast the next day was good, but almost too huge. Dinner in the dining room was ok, but my chicken was a little too salty. My son, however, had a wonderful pasta dish.
All in all, we would like to return to Shawnee State Park Lodge in the future.

We appreciate your comments regarding our lodge and your stay. I agree, our outdoor pool is one of the best in the Ohio State Park system. From the gorgeous views, to the hours of availability to the diving board! We have some awesome rates and packages available for your next visit!

We arrived for the long July 4th weekend and as soon as we checked in we noticed the sewage odor in the bathroom. The lodge immediate sent housekeeping but the smell of bleach that left did nothing to fix the sewage smell. Of course there were no other rooms so the manager was gracious about refunding our money, however we were 4 hours away from home on the holiday. Most disturbing was when we were checking out the general manager told us that we were not the first to complain and that it was an "intermittent" issue they had not solved.
