Owner description: The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The site houses their 25-acre wooded estate, known as Spiegel Grove; their 31-room Victorian mansion; the presidential library; a museum that was completely renovated in 2016; the tomb; and a mile of paved walking trails. There are fees to tour the museum and the home. Use of the presidential library, which has a massive genealogy and local history collections, is free. The first floor and and part of the second floor were restored in 2012 to look as it did when Rutherford and Lucy lived there. Nearly all of the furniture, paintings and artifacts in the home belonged to and were used by the couple and their family. The museum was renovated in early 2016 and includes interactive exhibits that tell the story of Rutherford and Lucy, the issues they faced and what they thought about those issues. Sit at a replica of the Resolute Desk - the original was given to President Hayes and still sits in the Oval Office of the White House - try on a Civil War soldier's haversack and more. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America's first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. The facility is celebrating its centennial in 2016. The site is open seven days a week most of the year. From January through March, it is closed on Mondays. It is also closed on Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. Hours on federal holidays are noon to 5 p.m.

“Great Mansion and Museum”

One of the best collections of firearms I have ever seen. Great Museum, and Mansion Tour. The basement of the museum is a treasure of firearms, weapons, carriages, etc. The home and the yard is amazing in how big it is. It is more costly as it is ran by a historical society, but, I felt it was well worth it for me and my family (6 people) to go to.

Great place for a rainy day with nothing to do. Kids and us enjoyed it and my daughter had fun dressing up in "old clothes"

“Stunning Mansion”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

We had passed the signs for this museum on Interstate 90 in Ohio many times. On our last trip to the midwest, we finally stopped, and are we did not regret it. The museum is outstanding: clean layout and much larger than we expected, with many fascinating exhibits and artifacts of the Hayes presidency and family, the Civil War, and a special exhibit on the War of 1812. The small gift shop was nice as well. But the highlight of the visit was the tour of "Spiegel Grove" the Hayes family's stunningly beautiful, fully restored mansion adjacent to the museum. This house contains many original furnishings and artwork, and frankly it rivals and even surpasses many of the most beautiful mansions in Newport RI. It really is a must-see for history buffs and those who love touring great old homes. If you live within a day's drive or are just passing through Fremont OH, it is well worth taking about 3 hours of your time to visit the Hayes Presidential Center.

“Rutherford B. Hayes Home and Museum”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

We did a day trip to Fremont with another couple and we were amazed with this historical site. We have been to Warren Harding, Abraham Lincoln and McKinley's home and this exceeded our expectations. The home is very large and beautiful with most of the original furniture and the grounds surrounding are gorgeous. The museum was very interesting as well. General Hayes was an awesome general/president and probably one of the most honest presidents we have ever had. He wanted to change the constitution to read a president can only serve one 6-year term because presidents only try to satisfy everyone the first term to get elected and don't get anything done. Can you imagine how this country would be different if he had passed that law? Needless to say, he refused to run for a second term.
