“A little above the usual cut of this chain”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Downtown Columbus is a bit peculiar in that the usual hotels -- Marriott, Hilton, Renaissance, etc -- are joined in the downtown area by the 2nd and 3rd tier hotels: including Crowne Plaza and Red Roof. This particular Crowne Plaza rises to the occasion with rooms that seemed to me a bit better than others I've stayed at and a catered meal at dinner (for a business group) that was quite a bit better than I had expected. The parking is a bit dear $23/d but you may be able to get it discounted down to $17 by mentioning your membership in their club; ditto with the internet connectivity.

Room Tip: apparently some of the facings are noisy on weekends -- i did not stay for a weekend

Not only is this my favorite brand of hotels, but this property is my favorite. The location is in the heart of downtown, with many restaurants within walking distance. There is a bar on property which is nicely priced, and thehotel has a very nice, staff. The rooms are nicely decorated, well equipped, and frequently updated. I have been staying here for several years now, and have seen many updates. The beds are very comfortable (provideing you are not requireing an extra firm matress) and I always joke with friends that if you love something in the room ,you can call and order it.

There is Highspeed internet & although i usually receive it free as a priority club member, i feel as though for the price and level of this hotel(or any other hotel in this star level) that it should always be free....especially since parking is at a premium in Columbus as well.

And sice a manager of the hotel reads these, PLEASE KEEP UP the continued Great service,,,,I LOVE THIS HOTEL & will be back shortly

Dear D H,

Out of all of the hotels in downtown Columbus, we are pleased that you chose to stay at the Crowne Plaza. We do read each and every one of our reviews, and it means a lot to say that this is your favorite hotel and property. It is true that we have been going through many updates ranging from bedding, to appliances, to even our carpeting. Free internet is something worth looking into, and will be brought up in our next meeting. Thanks again for your kind words; I will pass them along to other departments at the hotel. We hope to see you again soon!

The rooms in this Crowne Plaza seem to have been just redone. The bedding and toweling were very nice. Room was large and clean. Great location for the downtown attractions. Flat bread pizza choice on the late night menu is large and tasty.

We booked this location for an overnight stay while we were in town for the Blue Jackets game. There was a lot of stuff going on, apparently, because there was a big line of school buses out front and the place was filled with teenagers. We didn't really explore the hotel too much because it was so crowded, just went right to the room. I did notice that all three elevators we used during our stay had dirty carpeting, and that one even had trash wedged into the corner near the ceiling.

The room was very nice on the surface, but problems soon presented themselves. We were on the tenth floor in the far corner, but we could hear people talking very loudly in other rooms. Couldn't quite pinpoint where it was coming from; maybe the vents? Anyway, we could hear lots of talking and...activity, which was uncomfortable. We became worried that others could hear our conversation as clearly as we could hear theirs; consequently, we spoke in whispers for most of our visit.

We also found out the hard way that the toilet wouldn't flush. We called the front desk and they sent maintenance up quickly, but it stuck again and we had to call a second time. After that, the toilet flushed with a violent noise and splashed toilet water out onto the floor. If we had been staying more than one night, I would have asked to change rooms.

The linens seemed clean, but the carpet was dirty. The pillows were nice, but the mattress wasn't all that comfortable. That's how the visit went...some good, some bad.

Not all bad. We appreciated that it was a short (outdoor) walk to the Arena, although it's not quite as straight a shot as it is from the nearby Hyatt. Max and Erma's is right across the valet drive in Crowne Plaza's sister hotel, it was open till midnight and the food was better than some other late-night stops we've made after hockey games.

If you're thinking of booking this location and aren't yet a member of Priority Club, definitely do so. It's free and it will reduce your valet parking fee dramatically.

Basically, the big draw of this hotel is proximity to the Convention Center (across the street) and the Nationwide Arena (across the street and down a couple of blocks). The pluses, for us, were counterbalanced by some pretty big minuses in cleanliness, plumbing malfunctions and comfort. It's up to you, when you check out rates, to decide if it's worth it.

Room Tip: Join the priority club for a better rate and a big discount on valet parking.

Dear Kitsa,
Thank you for choosing to stay at the Crowne Plaza for your recent trip to Columbus. We were very busy last weekend due to having two different high school conventions in town. I apologize for the inconveniences you experienced in the hotel room. We are going through a brand refresh this spring, and making many updates to the hotel. We are actually in the process of getting new carpet that should be finished by the end of spring. Thank you for your input, it is much appreciated. Go Bluejackets!

The hotel was probably fine, but the people next door came back drunk and yelling at 3:15 in the morning. If my colleagues and I hadn't been stuck with an "adjoining room" that has less-than-soundproof doors, it wouldn't have been as much of a problem. The offending guests yelled and slammed doors for 15 minutes before we called the front desk, who promptly sent security to address the issue.
There is no ventilation in the workout room, and with 6 people on 6 cardio machines (all of them), the room gets hot and extremely humid fast - unbearably so.
Room itself was nice, but for $199 a night in Columbus, I expect a better fitness room and better soundproofing.

Dear Samanth879,
Thank you for your review. We take the satisfaction of our guest’s seriously here at the Crowne Plaza. Although we cannot control what time other guests staying at the hotel come in at night, we do apologize for the extra noise. Thank you for calling the front staff to handle the situation. The workout room is something we have been talking about updating for some time now. Thank you for the input.

Sincerely,

We stayed at this hotel after attending the Bon Jovi concert at Nationwide Arena. The hotel was very nice with helpful and friendly staff. The room was comfortable, clean and the beds were comfortable. Despite the downtown location, we thought the room was very quiet and did not hear any people in adjoining rooms. In addition, we found the area surrounding the hotel to have plenty of nice restaurants and entertainment. The valet parking was listed as $23 overnight, however, as a priority club member I only had to pay $12 due to a promotion the hotel was offering. I would recommend this hotel and plan to stay here again when in the area.
