“Not your average eating spot”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

We had dinner there with new friends, who are frequent patrons. Going to Alana's restaurant feels like going to someone's house for dinner... it has a very personal vibe to it, great food (but not the least bit pretentious), and is just a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. I had the nightly "surprise" entree... which is literally, a surprise. Those who are not quite as adventurous have a good menu to choose from. We loved it.

“A gem in Columbus”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This restaurant has ambiance and excellent food. We try to eat here once or twice a month. The food is original, and the menu changes almost weekly. Alana is almost always on site and makes it a point to speak to quests. The drinks are good with an outstanding selection of wine.

“Wonderful dinner experience...”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

We made a reservation for our anniversary on a friend's recommendation and were not disappointed. The wine was excellent and reasonably priced and our server knew the wine list well. The food was amazing and I think an incredible value for the price. The lighting was a little too dim, but other than that the atmosphere was intimate and comfortable, not the artwork I would have chosen but it's not the focal point of your experience. I appreciate successful businesses who do what they can to assist other independently employed individuals by giving them a showcase and opportunity to sell their work. The kitchen does not mass prepare food in advance, so your dish is hot and fresh when it comes out...I strongly prefer the European style of dining where your courses are not piled on top of one another and you have time to digest between starters, main course and dessert. If you are looking for a quick dinner, this is not the place for you. Plan on a couple of relaxing hours to enjoy your meal and the company of your dining companions. Sadly we don't live in Columbus, but when in town Alana's will definitely be on the list!

“Pretentious and obnoxious”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

A friend made this reservation for 8 of us who were visiting Columbus for a weekend college reunion because it is considered "#2 in Columbus." That seemed good enough of a recommendation. Based on our experience, we'd hate to know what #3 is....

First, the walls are covered with atrocious paintings (for sale) that made my stomach lurch. Seriously, they possessed the skill of a kindergartener using fingerpaint for the first time, with bulging eyes, misshapen heads, and almost violent attitudes. Perhaps they were meant to be whimsical, but I felt as if I were being attacked by angry mutants -- not exactly the right environment for a calm and leisurely meal.

Then, the menu. We had checked it online weeks earlier, and it looked OK. But it changes each day, and the selections were quite limited. Descriptions were puzzling, as some of the words were unidentifiable. Any variations on the dishes were discouraged (if even possible) by an additional charge (yes, it cost more to OMIT the tomatoes from the pasta than to include them!). If you have any food sensitivities, avoid this restaurant, as everything seems to have something exotic and the server was unwilling to divulge any ingredients in the dishes.

Surprise! Yes, there's "surprise" on the menu --- supposedly, even the server had no idea what it was that evening. We couldn't get a clue (animal, mineral, vegetable?) and were unwilling to take a chance on something that might not be to our liking -- especially at the price charged. We ordered pasta (meh) and risotto (like lead).

Which leads to the pricing -- not outrageous, but for what we got, it was definitely overpriced. They even charge $2 for an additional basket of bread.

There was an attitude about the place -- everyone who worked there seemed to be overimpressed with themselves. Hard to explain, but all 8 of us felt it -- and we come from different backgrounds, work experience, etc. It all just seemed pretentious. And obnoxious. And overpriced.

We considered leaving before we ordered, but there was nothing else interesting nearby and we had been dropped off, so we had no transportation. As a result, we all ordered something, but left feeling unsatisfied. An altogether disappointing evening.

“My Favorite Restaurant In Columbus”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

I eat at Alana's as often as I can and it's always something great. Alana creates the menu daily based on what wonderful and fresh food she can buy locally. You have to pay for the quality of the food, but it's totally worth it. Plus, if you like wine, you can get bottles at state minimum with just a $5 corkage fee. The staff is great and don't be afraid to ask questions about the dishes because they will be happy to steer you toward something that fits your tastes.
