First the good news: The CJO boasts some very skilled jazz musicians performing some great music in a wonderful old theatre downtown. They usually include some wonderful guest artists who are both outstanding performers and, also, seem to sincerely appreciate the talents of the musicians they're performing with.

So, if you've never gone, you will not be disappointed. That said, we used to be season ticket holders for a few years and this past year decided not to renew. Why? The formula is getting old. There is a tendency to invite some guest performers back that, well, don't compare to the level of some others we've seen. And they're invited back way too often. There's the obligatory Bobby Floyd overly long piano solo. And, there's has been a tendency to repeat some of the more popular pieces routinely year-in and year-out. So, for us, it's worn thin. Likely, next year, we may choose individual concerts to attend, rather than making a season out of it.

But the above comment is not a negative feature of the orchestra itself, but of the formula it's established. As a special night out, the Jazz Arts Group rarely disappoints.

We have gone consistently to Columbus Jazz Orchestra concerts over the years....great performances, great guest artists and played in the beautiful Southern Theatre. Try a performance - you won't be disappointed.

The CJO is one of the oldest still existing jazz orchestras led by Byron Stripling. The band performs at the Southern Theatre and the Lincoln Theatre, both old refurbished institutions in Columbus, that provide a warm, cozy setting and great accoustics.. Try to catch one of their performances when you are visiting. You'll leave feeling re-energized and happy.
