“Continuing to decline”
Reviewed July 27, 2005

Two years after Glenn Ritchie's insightful review, Scioto Downs is still continuing to decline. Grandstand seats are caked with bird crud, the restrooms are still disgusting, it seems like there's no effort being made to make the place at all attractive. The only reason I give it two stars is because I like horse racing so much and this is all we've got here in the summertime. Scioto Downs makes Beulah Park seem like a palace in comparison.

“SCioto Downs - the No Place of Harness Racing”
Reviewed May 27, 2003

I have attended Scioto Downs for the better part of 30 years, and seen a logarithmic decline from excellence to its present state. Due to the absolutely inept and penny-pinching present ownership, the track is virtually crumbling. Not a dime has been spent on renovation or repair for over 2 years, and much of the original structure has never been touched. The lower grandstand reaks of sewage every night, and the restrooms are disgusting. It has been about 4 years since the grandstand seats have been cleaned (don't ever wear white slacks). Due to the absolute lack of customer service, loyal horse owners, drivers, trainers and fans have chosen other alternatives. The quality of horses raced has gone from nearly world class to "glue factory" candidates, as purse structure is among the lowest in the country. This year, there has been no attempt to field an open or invitation race. All quality drivers, with 2 or three exceptions, have chosen other tracks. Most of the consistently winning drivers were "kicked off" the track by the former SD President, leaving those drivers who only attempt to win when the conditions, post position, and wagering odds are favorable. The collection of country fair drivers and "big track rejects" that presently race make successful wagering almost impossible. Quality owners/trainers, with a couple of exceptions have long-since tired of the lack of respect, and have also moved on. The few quality owners who remain use SD to rehab injured horses, test out claims, and condition stake elibible entries for big races at other tracks. The food is practically inedible, while the price increases each year. Ever seen a quality restaurant that serves French fries and sliced bread with almost every meal? While SD was once a great place for an "evening out", its present condition now precludes attendance by virtually anyone except horse owners and gamblers. The track announcer is a complete buffoon who knows nothing about harness racing, and makes quot; This guy could make the stretch drive of the final heat of the Brown Jug boring. The once prestigious "Little Brown Jug Preview Race" now consists of 2 or 3 legitimate Jug eligibles racing a bunch of $10,000 claimers. Scioto Downs, entertaining 5-7,000 fans on a Saturday night as little as three years ago (handle approaching $1 MM) is now lucky to entertain 2,000 fans or see a handle approaching $200K. Oh, on warm night the mosquitoes (i.e., West Nile virus & horses?) are so thick that anyone seated outside can be "eaten alive". I used to attend Scioto 3-4 nights week, and now can only say "please MTR Gaming - take this formerly proud track out of its misery!!"I
