“No security at all!”

Hard to believe how easy it was to roam the halls with only a few troopers around, had the place to myself, it was nice to see it but once was enough.

“History comes to life”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

After an extensive renovation several years ago it is fascinating to see. Abraham Lincoln's body was in the rotunda on the way to his burial. People visiting the rotunda should look up and see the stained glass Seal of Ohio. The lower level has a great museum shop and some activities for the kids.

“Thrilled yet disappointed at the same time.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

I have to admit the disappointment was partly my fault. We ran late because the previous building we visited. So, we missed the last tour. We took the self tour and I got lost several times. We checked with the State Trooper. He was very nice, leaving his station to guide us to our destination not once but twice. As we were walking I mentioned we were from Michigan. Oops, one should not mention being a Michigan fan in Ohio State University territory. LOL. Both the Senate and House rooms were closed, locked up tight. I really missed seeing them. However, the Rotunda area is stunning. Two other areas I liked were, the very modern 1890's style elevator and the "catacombs" (the basement). The architecture is surprising. Mostly brick, almost appearing to be a rubble foundation with its arches and double vaulted ceilings. I wonder how that foundation can support the tremendous weight of the above building. I would recommend it for a first time visitor. Go early in the day and take the tour.

“Great Lawn for a Football Game”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

We just did a wandering tour of the Statehouse while in town for the football game. We did not go on an official tour which I know would have been much better but we did get to see the lovely building and even lovelier grounds. The state troopers did not seem too pleased to answer any of our questions when we asked them for some directions inside the Statehouse - he told us to take the tour. Not very pleasant but then again they did not kick us off the lawn where we played football!

“The Peoples' House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

This is a wonderful attraction in the heart of Columbus! There are often concerts on the lawn, and lots of people in surrounding offices have picnics on the grass on the numerous benches surrounding the statehouse.

Inside, there are several historic markers, as well as an interactive museum of Ohio politics. This would be perfect for kids on a fieldtrip or anyone wanting to learn about how state government works.

There is also a giftshop in the basement if you find yourself craving Ohio souvenirs. There is very convenient parking in the cavernous parking deck underneath the building. Almost all COTA buses pass by the front of the statehouse as well, if you're into public transit.

The statehouse is a fun, educational place that is free to enter and easy to visit.
