My wife and I visited Johnny's on Fulton on 5/3/2014. We were seated in the back room, next to the doorway. The tables are very close together, and I opted to not sit next to the doorway. Upon arriving at our table, our server silently moved the silverware across the table to where I chose to sit, not a hint of a smile or welcoming attitude. I ordered a Manhattan after learning that there is no cocktail menu, but that they can make just about anything that doesn't require a blender. I appreciate that approach, but the drink was watery and small. The bread was bland and the butter was hard. My Caesar salad was quite good, nicely dressed and balanced, but the croutons were a bit stale. My wife's bacon-wrapped scallops were excellent, and it's not easy to have perfectly cooked scallops with crispy bacon. Her veal with marsala sauce was a major hit, extremely tender with popping flavors. My fettuccine with rabbit sausage and roasted red peppers was a major disappointment. The problem was the texture of the pasta. It was cooked beyond tender to the point of baby food, and parts of it were stuck together like a cake. The sauce was fine, but for an Italian place of such distinction to serve pasta like that is inexcusable. I know that I really should have said something, but I didn't want to engage our server in conversation. Towards the end of the meal, he actually said to my wife, "Are you still working on that?" With so many other great places in the area, it's unlikely that we will return.

Very attractive restaurant, could be romantic, voices really carry. A restaurant at this price level should have very good service and excellent food. Service here was indifferent. The recipes for the steamed clams and escargot were unusual but well cooked. Two of us ordered fish (salmon and grouper) they were not special but very well cooked. The scalloped potatoes and rice sides were not very good and were not warm. The Italian feast seafood dish was excellent. We were not impressed with the service or food or this price level.

Johnny's is fine dining with New York personality and a mix of old school charm.
It is located in a traditional old Cleveland neighborhood - you'll note the exterior retro neon sign that reads, Johnny's Bar. The entrance does contain this long glistening dark bar and you get a real old school urban vintage vibe as you walk past chattering patrons of all ages. The cozy main dining room is just a few steps above with small round white tablecloths and vases with fresh flowers - everything seems to have a warm gleaming glow as wafting smells of deliciousness permeate from the kitchen. We were seated immediately.

Our server was friendly and helped us by explaining the various sauces and nightly specials with her take on the highlights of each one.
She acted much like our own personal food connoisseur which added to the charm of this restaurant. It was amazing to hear the detail with which she described the dishes - a real pro & great memorizer too! Wow.

EXTENSIVE WINE LIST: Lots of choices from all over the world Including multiple Proseccos. We had help choosing Penfolds Bin 138, a barossa shiraz grenache blend. It was smooth & juicy enough to complement veal, steak & pastas.

STUFFED CALAMARI: 2 Large Sauteed tender pieces of calamari stuffed with a cheese mixture. Our friends ordered this as they had never tried it prepared this way and they loved it. It was not the traditional fried & red sauce calamari.

BANANA STUFFED PEPPERS WITH VEAL, CHEESE & MARINARA: Soft tender peppers, not too spicy (as is mostly the case) stuffed with tender ground veal & cheese mixture and home made marinara sauce. The gentleness of this dish surprises you - and is far better because they removed the ultra hot seeds during preparation. Delicate & delicious.

CRISP GREEN SALAD: Tender fresh greens of several varietal lettuces are included. We added fresh blue cheese on top to complement the tasty Italian balsamic dressing.

HOMEMADE LOAF BREAD with WEDGES OF UNSALTED BUTTER: The bread has a cake like feel to it - home made by the kitchen. It was quite good and had a touch of sweetness!

STEAK AU POIVRE WITH GREEN PEPPERCORN SAUCE AND A SHERRY COGNAC REDUCTION SAUCE: Scrumptuous beyond belief - the sauce was heavenly delicious & full of flavor sent from the Italian gods of divine cuisine! It was recommended by our server. As I like my meat cooked medium well she suggested to butterfly it - I said no. She gave me no backtalk - as many restaurants usually do! It was butter tender with a good bit of pink and that crusty charred exterior that if not done perfectly can really ruin the piece of meat. It comes with a potatoes au gratin & a small terrine of a delectable cheese mixture.

MEDALLIONS OF VEAL WITH ONIONS, MUSHROOMS & MARSALA WINE DEMI GLACE: Plump Veal medallions cooked to perfection with a flavorful reduction sauce that was not too sweet - as some Marsala sauces can be.

HEAVENLY PERFECT BANANAS FOSTER: Bananas Flambeau with liqueur cooked with butter & brown sugar and served with mounds of fresh vanilla bean ice cream. The reason restaurants no longer offer this dish is it has to be cooked individually & on the spot. They spent the time to cook the bananas so they become soft, sweet & sticky. When this dish is done right and it was here there is nothing better in the whole wide world. I was left speechless. This is old school for sure and the only restaurant that still has it on their menu. DON'T EVEN QUESTION - JUST ORDER THIS - it can be shared as it is very generous with 3 scoops of ice cream and plenty of buttery rum sauce.

The restaurant is pricey but when quality meats, pastas & dishes are this amazing... served with sauces this delicious... in an exciting warm uber cool atmosphere - It is well worth the price.
We all commented we would rather dine here more & the average less expensive places a lot less.
I would recommend almost anything here - This place knows how to prepare food exquisitely.

We had dinner at Johnny's on Fulton the Saturday before New Years Eve. As expected the service was outstanding and the food was excellent. Yes, everything (especially the cocktails) is a little pricey, but well worth it.

We just had a holiday lunch here and all of we severely disappointed. Service was slow and the waiter was rude. The food was flavorless from steaks to fish to pasta. Nothing about our lunch was good. I have never rated a restaurant a one star but if I could it would be no stars. Don't waste your money on outdated decor, poor service and bland food when there are so many other good restaurants in Cleveland !
