My husband and I spent a day touring the cemetery and the monument. We really enjoyed our day and would highly suggest it as a FREE leasurley way to spend the day.

Read the book - Destiny of the Republic and then take your family to the Monument. Climb the stairs and see the best view of Cleveland and the lake. James Garfield was left handed and could write in Latin and Greek with both hands at the same time. Walk over and put a dime on Rockefellers grave and become rich then go to Abraham Lincoln's right hand man during his presidency and read what his grave says - Hint - His secretary. So many important people to explore. Cleveland built this country - the proof is at Lake View cemetery.

They don't built architecture like this anymore. It is a nice piece of history in Cleveland in a well kept cemetery.

Lakeview Cemetery is an interesting place to drive through in itself - thousands of unusual monuments in a beautiful, hilly, wooded setting. At the top is the "monument" to President Garfield, but it is really more like a castle. It is a striking stone building, and from the upper balcony there is a beautiful view toward the city and Lake Erie. Staffed by knowledgeable volunteers, there is quite a bit of history that can be learned here. It is well worth a visit!

The cemetery is adjacent to Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. It is a pleasant walk from that campus if you happen to be there. Also in close proximity to Severance Hall, the Botanical Garden, and the other wonderful sites of the University Circle area.
