Attraction details
Reviewed July 3, 2014

"The 2014 hot list" by Cleveland.com has listed the Italian Cultural Garden's operatic night as one of "the top 100 things to do this summer in Cleveland". Experience a magical evening at one of the crown jewels of Cleveland's Cultural Gardens on Sunday, July 20, 2014. From 6PM to 7:30PM the Italian Cultural Garden will host a FREE outdoor concert to the public. Opera Per Tutti will perform well known songs from famous Italian operas in the beautiful Italian Renaissance garden. Pack a picnic or enjoy wood fired pizza and Italian gelato. Little Italy Wines will have free wine tastings. Bring your own lawn chair to ensure a seat. Parking is free. Last summer's concert was totally enjoyable for me, for my parents and for my friends. This free performance is presented as part of the Italian Cultural Garden Foundation's "Viva! La Cultura Italiana" cultural series. The Italian Cultural Garden was dedicated in 1930 "as a symbol of the contribution of Italian culture to American democracy." It is designed in a formal Renaissance style with large walkways, balustrades and benches. Two large winding staircases lead down to a brick paved courtyard.

The upper level Renaissance fountain is modeled after the fountain in Villa Medici in Rome, Italy. The staircases and lower level have elements from the Villa d'Este outside Rome. Carved sandstone images representing famous Italian cultural figures in the Arts and Letters and Arts and Science: Giotto, Florentine artist; Michelangelo, Petrarca, Renaissance scholar, poet and humanist; Verdi, operatic composer, Leonardo da Vince and Marconi, Nobel Prize winner and inventor of the wireless telegraphy, grace the lower level.

Virgil the Roman poet and a statue of Dante Alighieri are on the upper level. In 2007, the Italian Cultural Garden Foundation began a $1.2 million restoration; total restoration of the hardscape, two large Renaissance fountains, installation of historic lighting on both levels, benches and memorial balustrade to Philip J. Garbo it's creator and the replanting of the garden in a Renaissance design. Unfinished plans from 1930 call for a Pantheon structure with a center statue of Galileo. Tax deductible donations for the restoration may be sent to: Italian Cultural Garden Foundation - 1284 SOM Center Rd. # 316 - Cleveland, Ohio 44124

We attended the Opera Per Tutti on July 21st and discovered a new treasure. Never having been to the Italian Cultural Garden before, we were completely awed by the gardens and enjoyed immensely the selection of favorite opera arias. The music, the wine, the food, the atmosphere, priceless. Thank you!

The entire area of cultural gardens offer some very beautiful spring plantings. The sculptures are varied, the plantings unique, and when things are in view it is a real WOW. I enjoy all of the gardens that are being restored. Some are still just a mess. You need to be aware of your surroundings because the area is isolated and often crime ridden

The garden is beautifully maintained with a quiet and relaxed feel while sitting and watching either the water fountain, a wedding, concert or just looking as the seasons change.
