“An excellent choice in Cleveland”
Reviewed August 28, 2011

The Glidden House was located in a nice section of Cleveland that was close to all
attractions by car. It was close to Little Italy, where we ate the first night. There were also several restaurants in walking distance. We stayed in a queen room that was very nice. It had all the expected amenities and a comfortable bed. The breakfast was more than we had expected and served in the library and sunroom. There were both hot and cold choices: baked eggs, sausage, bacon, yogurt, fruit, cereal, juice, etc. We certainly did not walk away hungry.
The one problem we did encounter was that a wedding was being held at the hotel and some of the wedding guests took parking spaces reserved for hotel guests. Other than that, there were no problems and our stay was quiet, comfortable, and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad choice and the queen room was very nice.

I was so excited to be staying at a place that is registered as a historic place . From the outside , I expected the interior to be filled with antiques . While the lobby is pretty , I had a hard time distinguishing it from a Marriott once I was inside . Yes , it is lovely and so close to Case Western Reserve ,where my son is a student ,but the inside is a lot more modern and I was disappointed by the contemporary feeling once inside . The room was very comfy and clean . Breakfast was again a disappointment , as a lot of the food was gone and not replenished . There was an empty vat of oatmeal , and the berries and pastries were gone . I asked if there were more , and was told there was not . It was only 8:40 and breakfast was served until 9 . I feel if breakfast is served until 9 , I don't want to hear about the large Canadian party who ate before me . This is a good hotel who should know how much food to prepare for the number of guests at the hotel ! The staff was very nice . Eat breakfast early !

We stayed at the Glidden House during a road trip to IL. We only had one night there, but we are definitely going to stay there when we go back to explore more of the city. It's on the National Register of Historic Places, which is the reason I wanted to stay there.
It was one of the most comfortable, homey, lovely rooms I've ever stayed in in the States. The staff was wonderful and very friendly and helpful. The location is very good for getting around the city. There was parking on the property. The breakfast was terrific--homemade slow cooked oatmeal, fresh fruit, among other things.
Can't wait to go back.

My group had the good fortune to spend some time at the Glidden House while we took part in a conference July31st to August 4th. What a remarkable place!

I worked very closely with Amanda Kane starting a year in advance of our event. I cannot give Amanda enough accolades; she is wonderful. She helped me with the registration process, secured an excellent rate for our stay, guided me through the myriad of local restaurants for an off-site meal, even recommended an amazing caterer for our on-site event. She left no question unanswered and replied to my emails promptly with the highest professionalism but with the familiarity of a good friend.

The Glidden House, from its beautifully appointed rooms, the amazing estate and the excellent location was a pleasure to stay at. I enjoyed the intimacy of the setting and the house staff was attentive and friendly.

I would highly recommend to anyone the Glidden House it was ideal for our group and would be perfect for an individual stay also. When I come back to the University Circle area I will stay at the Glidden house.

At the last minute, we searched for a hotel in Cleveland. We found the Glidden House Inn, called and jumped on an airplane to Cleveland. The reservations service was gracious, efficient and gave clear and precise directions from the airport to the Inn.

We held our breath, fearing the worst. But as we entered the University Circle area of Cleveland, our mouths were agape; it is stunningly beautiful. I've never heard that about Cleveland. As we turned down Ford Drive, we smiled as a beautiful mansion came into view: the Glidden House Inn.

We parked in front and went through the grand front door. On the right, we were met with a painting of the former owner of the home and founder of Glidden Paints and varnishes. Under his serious gaze was a delightful receptionist who had a Cleveland demeanor of "be incredibly nice when spoken to, but not intrusive" and she arranged our room.

We reserved the Mansion suites, which are lovely rooms in the old mansion itself. They were perfect for our needs and put the suites as the nicest we have stayed anywhere. The internet photos do not do justice! The only challenge was that the shower only allowed for heat slightly above lukewarm. Other than that, it was pure perfection.

At a little restaurant in the cottage next door, we had fabulous food. Even better, when we looked up, we were shocked to see a building with weirdly curving bricks and windows. It was pretty clear that Frank Gehry's work was on display and we thought it his best. We were able to sit outside because of the great weather in July in Cleveland and ended up eating almost every meal there.

Our worst moment was checking out; we can't wait to go back!

We typically stay at a lot of B&B's, but this time we decided to stay at a hotel. Glidden House was excellent. Great part of town, within walking distance to the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Little Italy. Room was modern and nice. Breakfast bar was above average, with eggs and hot breakfast items. Would definitely stay there again on our next trip to Cleveland.

My family has stayed at Glidden House so many times over the past few years that we lost count. When our daughter (who was in college in Cleveland) moved into an off-campus apartment, my biggest regret was that we would no longer be staying at Glidden House. The inn is very conveniently located in the middle of the University Circle district. They have off-street parking (just about exactly enough for a full house.) The rooms are comfortable and updated (retaining the decorative charm of the older parts of the Inn.) One quirky detail about the rooms is that they all feature a large torch-style lamp that seems not to have any mechanism for turning off. On our first stay, exhausted after a long trip, we spent half an hour trying to turn the lamp off and finally called the front desk at 2 AM. It's a "touch lamp"-- you need only to touch the column and it turns off or on. So that explained its odd behavior.

The support staff is very friendly and helpful. They assisted us on various occasions with numerous odd requests, such as storing a bicycle overnight in the back area before dorm move-in. Breakfast is generous and ample (self-serve), but in the morning rush they seem apt to run out of silverwear and/or dishes, so don't leave your breakfast excursion for the last minute. The breakfast rooms include dining rooms and an indoor porch-- very pleasant.

There is an in house bar with a tapas menu from the excellent restaurant next door. On our first visit, we arrived fairly late, in an unexpected November snowstorm, cold and exhausted from 7 hours of driving. We had the cozy bar to ourselves, and the bartender brought us tapas-style food from next door and gave us tips for how to navigate the area without snowboots.

The only negative comment I have is that their web-based reservation system seems to have some glitches (otherwise it would be 5 stars for Glidden.) I know a number (by which I mean 3) of other families who had a similar experience to ours in which their reservation was either lost or downgraded. We arrived with 4 people expecting a room with two large beds, but were given a room with only one bed. Another family's reservation was lost altogether; another family had the same awkward situation: father, mother, and 18-year-old daughter given a room with only one bed and told there were no more cots available. In each case the staff worked hard to accommodate the families and some solution was reached-- a cot found, a room found, etc. My advice is: don't rely on an online reservation. Pick up the phone and make a verbal reservation.
