“Get Away Overnight”

Overall, the experience was great - beautiful scenery. The room was clean and we watched the deer from our balcony in the early evening. We were not pleased with the service we received at the restaurant the morning after our overnight. We were told that we could not be seated because breakfast was over even though we arrived BEFORE 10:30 and no one was there to seat us. The front desk did offer us lunch coupons but that did not help with the lack of breakfast. However, do not miss the overall experience of Salt Fork Lodge and Park due to our restaurant experience.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at the end of the summer season. We had beautiful weather, but there's enough to do here that it really didn't matter. On the Saturday, both the indoor and outdoor pools were open. After that, only the indoor was available because it was not "summer." We used both pools, the hot tub, went to the campfire (Saturday night), hiked on some trails, and rented DVDs and a player for evenings. We tried the geocaching, but were too dumb to figure it out, and they returned our money. There is a small playgound near the pool, plus beach volley ball, shuffle board, horseshoes, and an indoor gameroom. It feels like a resort.

The room had 2 double beds (or we could have gotten one queen), and was spacious enough to be comfortable. There was a full bathroom, plus another sink and mirror outside of the bathroom. Nice if you have a family all trying to get ready at once. We had a great balcony overlooking the outdoor pool, which was lit up at night. There was a refrigerator in the room, but no microwave. There are 2 microwaves available to use in other areas. The room was very clean, as were all the public areas that we saw.

The restaurant had very good food, with good variety. Vegetarian and lower calorie options are on the menu. The Salt Fork dessert pretzel was amazing! We had it twice--probably about 2000 calories! I thought the prices are a little higher than average. I had a great bowl of oatmeal with fruit and nuts for $5. An average dinner entree is about $16.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The receptionist who rented us the geocache unit got it all set up for us, and explained some of the basics. Unfortunately, the batteries died, and when we replaced them with the new ones provided to us, we lost all the bits that she put it for us. Did not want to start over.

The hotel is showing it's age, and some repairs are needed. Not enough , though, to keep us from returning or recommding it to ouir friends. We had a great time, and were very comfortable. I feel we got our money's worth. Next I'd like to take the grandkids!

We only stayed one night for our trip but did enjoy the place. I agree with other reviews that it does need to be updated, but our rooms were clean.Good coffee in the early AM would be a plus.We didn't use the park facilities other than the pool, which seemed well-maintained. The staff was friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: We used the two double bed two bunk rooms which gave us plenty of room.We were on the first floor in...

We visited Salt Folk Lodge, for a family weekend getaway in Sept. of 2012! It was my parents, my husband, and our two twin 7 year olds. We stayed in a room that had two double beds and two bunk beds. It was very clean and nice, and was spacious enough for all 6 of us. We had a beautiful view out our french doors. The deer would just walk up to the patio....it was glorious! We used both the indoor and outdoor swimming pools. They were clean, very large, and well maintained.
They only problems we had, was the fact that our room did not have a microwave like promised. We didn't really need it, but it would have been nice to warm up our cinnamon rolls in the morning. Other than that it was an excellent stay!! =)

My husband & I wanted to check out this park. Had heard lots of good things…However, I was somewhat disappointed. We stayed at the lodge. Upon seeing the lodge, the roof is in dire need of repair. The shaker shingles look like they are ready to pop off. The grounds were well kept and the common areas were clean but dated. It appears that no major remodeling has been done since they opened in 1972. The room were also clean but dated. As for the restaurant, that’s another story. We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning at 8:30 and were seated right away, but were not even talked to or offered a cup of coffee. People who came in after us were attended to and orders taken, while we just sat there. We had enough and left and never went back during our stay. We traveled the 14 miles into Cambridge for our meals….That’s a real shame. The least they could have done was offer us a coffee! Anyway, the next day was Sunday and we roamed the park. Some areas like the beach and marinas looked worn. Camp grounds were nice and well kept as were the cabins. On our return to the lodge we wanted to watch our favorite football team on Sunday afternoon on CBS, but lo and behold, no CBS affiliate on their cable TV. So in order for us to watch football, we had to go the lounge and watch it. (They had CBS though!) Coincidence or was it really because of the horrific storm they endured three months prior? I don’t know. But the bartender was happy she made a nice tip for taking care of us during our stay. One more thing about the lodge accommodations, each room has their own little deck with patio doors, but they do not have screens on them so if you want to leave the fresh air in, you also let in the gnats and mosquitoes. Also, the doors entering the lodge are in need of repair. One doesn’t even have a handle on it! One more thing, the walls and sound barriers have something to be desired. You can hear the people next to you carrying on conversations, etc. If you wanted to sleep in, forget it.

In closing, the park was probably a gem in its day, but today, it needs a lot of $ from the State to restore it to its original beauty. What a shame. I must say however, they do cater to families and provide children programing as well as a beautiful pool (indoor and out). I did not swim, so I can’t comment on the water quality, but it appeared to be very nice.

9/13/12 I just had my second stay this year at Salt Fork. In June we camped in our mobile home and the park is well maintained. It's a very scenic area and we had a wonderful time. I decided to rent a cabin for our girls trip this past weekend. I had some minor issues with our room but the staff, maintenance and cleaning crew arrived within 1 hour of my notification to the office and went over and beyond my expectations. Everyone is so pleasant and did everything possible to see to our comfort. I will definately come back!!!!!

This was our second stay at Salt Fork Resort for a family reunion. All of our adult children and their families stayed as well. When you arrive at Salt Fork State Park you have an incredible drive of seven miles to the Lodge. The lake and wooded areas are just beautiful. Be very watchful for deer and other animals.

The park offers numerous activites, fishing, boat rentals, horse back riding, hiking just to name a few. There is the Kennedy House to visit which has a lovely view of the lake. There is also a cave to explore, but caution is advised. My son was very interested in the hike that looks for Big Foot, which meets in the park on Saturday evenings.

The Lodge is just what you'd expect in the middle of the park. It has a rustic quality but also very luxurious. The rooms are very clean, spacious and the decor is wonderful. There are two pools, one indoor and one outdoor for everyone to enjoy. There is a playscape and sand box for the kids along with volleyball and shuffle board to play. They have a very nice play room for the kids with video games, ping pong and air hockey. The Lodge also has a very nice variey of activities and crafts for kids of all ages. If you want you can put your handprints on the wall in the activity room. Our grandson cannot wait to go back and see his handprint that he did on our visit in August 2012.

If you have a large family there are plenty of areas available for you to gather. There is a nice size area by the fireplace, another by the large screen TV or just above the indoor pool where everyone could meet to play games. The resturant has very good food for a reasonable price.

The outside grounds surrounding the Lodge are beautiful. There are some trails that you can walk just outside. Watch for the deer as there are many in the area. As my family and I walked one of the trails we were so surprised to discover when we got to the bottom of the hill that a deer was just above us. My grandson was very surprised as he stood on the sidewalk one afternoon that a young fawn that still had spots came running up to him as if to say hi. We also had about eight deer show up during our private bonfire for the family.

I would strongly recommend a visit to Salt Fork State Part and Resort. You will not regret the drive once you see how beautiful it is. We are already talking about when we'll go back
