We scored a discount coupon from the local newspaper, which I purchased as soon as it was posted, having read a great review of the new management and chef at a restaurant I'd long wanted to try. Zoar is a half-hour destination drive for us. Calling on a Saturday afternoon for reservations that evening turned out to be a good idea, as they were completely booked except for a 5:30 time-slot, much earlier than we usually eat. That gave us a clue that people have definitely discovered this gem.
As others have said, the historic element of the building is very appealing, but the food is the reason we'll be back.
I was looking forward to trying the stuffed cabbage rolls, but then heard the evening's specials which included a rye-crusted walleye, literally the best piece of fish I've eaten. My husband's 12-oz Angus strip would have been enough to feed a family and was perfection. I was able to snag a bit of the stuffed cabbage from a friend, and recommend that as well. Sides are limited, but the potato pancake and broccolini were nice accompaniments to each meal. We added a side salad, which were more than the usual boring salad. These had lovely big red tomato slices, pickled red onion, homemade croutons, and a tangy house dressing.
After all this, we definitely did NOT need dessert, but could not pass up beignets with homemade ice cream, plenty for two to share.
Our waiter (the son of the owners, according to what I read on the website) apologized several times for slow service or things coming out of the kitchen slowly, and comped our desserts, but we truly felt the service was excellent. Even the hostess kept an eye on us, and other servers would stop by to refill water, etc. They obviously set high standards for treating their guests, and it shows.
The next time we return, we'll book reservations more in advance so we have a table in a less high-traffic area, but a building from 1829 does tend to have small, closed-in rooms and low ceilings. It reminded us a little of one of the Williamsburg taverns, but less pricy.
