“A lovely church and very old by Australian standards”

St. Andrew's Uniting Church
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Built in the 1840s, this old church is in a lovely setting near the Angus River. The congregation have been conducting a major renovation and they have done a very good job of it. We were luck to be taken into the old tower and up to see the clock workings too.

This church is not to be confused with the other and more famous and more visited church of the same name in Glenelg, a suburb of Adelaide. This church is in Strathalbyn, a small and picturesque town in a river vally about 60 km from Adelaide. The drive to Strathalbyn is very enjoyable and the church is the main attraction in this town surrounded by a bend of the river. The inside of church is quiet plain but the exterior is very imposing with a bell tower and a clock. Worth a drive to the town and see the church as a bonus.

This once Presbyterian Church with clock face and bell tower constructed on the top of small cliif above the Angas River , looks over a fine bridge, bend in the river and a peninsular of land almost surrounded by the river , which contains a picturesque garden with a footbridge at the other end.The view of this church dominates the town center and is constantly painted and photographed. The setting is outstanding. The inside of the church is plain and smaller than what you would expect. The clock is functional but the bell is silent as it would only damage the tower if rung.Strathalbyn is a beautiful small town and well worth a visit.
