“Great 2 Bedroom Cottage”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

We stayed in the 2 Bedroom Heritage Cottage at the back of the motel. Very spacious for our family of 4 - couple with 2 teenagers. Beds were comfortable. Quiet location. You also have your own secure undercover car park as an added bonus. Excellent value for the price.

Peterborough Motel
Midday found us driving along the winding road through the Thakaringa hills leaving Broken Hill, city of the red snow storms behind. Feral goats grazed on the road verges, and in the nearby hills. No time to be inattentive at the wheel.
Where to stop for lunch? Was the next question. The answer, Cockburn (pronounced, Coburn.) Cockburn is a really small township located on the NSW and South Australia border, pretty much a railway town of the past catering for change of train crews, Telstra depot, passing travellers, and “watering hole” for the locals.
Cockburn of old supported two pubs, and a store. Now the population has decreased even more to perhaps a dozen houses, and now only one licenced pub. The famous Border Gate Hotel, is now only a tucker stop, and is worth the stop. There is a little dusty caravan park in the town itself, dusty, yes, but the amenities in a corrugated building are spotless.
Lunch over, and many photos later, we set sail for Peterborough for our overnight in The Peterborough Motel. But we still had a couple of hundred Kilometres to go.
Midday, the roos should still be dozing somewhere in the shade, but don’t bank on that! Emus are always around.
Black rubber skid marks on the road led to the carcases of overnight road kills, emus, roos, cattle. They were past causing passing motorists any problem. The danger now was the crows and eagles that gorge on the carrion. They gorge until the last moment, and then take wing sometimes into the path of oncoming vehicles.
We arrived safely at Peterborough early afternoon, time enough to find The Peterborough Motel, settle in and walk our home town, refreshing our childhood memories.
Refreshing is a word to describe the motel which was built over forty years ago. We had stayed in Peterborough often, at the two other motels, but gave this motel a miss due to poor PR.
The poor PR was completely wrong. We were received very warmly, given a carton of milk for our breakfast needs, and shown to our room.
The room was spacious, double bed, two seater lounge, TV, refrigerator, Microwave, toaster, cutlery, and crockery.
If you want a quiet night’s sleep, this is the place to enjoy just that. Being a local, I did miss the dull rumble of the local power station, (Long closed) that lulled us to sleep long ago.
We didn’t take advantage of the swimming pool, or the outside kitchen, BBQ area, but that looked a great place to meet other travellers.
While in town, have a look at the local history group’s display located in Jervois Street,
The Steamtown tours, don’t miss their night time Sound and light display. The volunteer guides have conducted in excess of 300 tours through past years. Get directions to the “Meldonfield display in the YMCA building. One man’s, and wife, miniature reconstruction of the old Petersburg Railway Station, plus Cob and Co carriages, wheelwright builders in miniature, so much from two people, it’s amazing. Thankfully the town council took it over when the couple found it too hard to share with the many tourists as they passed through.
WE had a great time in Peterborough, and we will definitely stay again at The Peterborough Motel.

We turned up unannounced and where surprised at the price and the room, tv ,air cond, and everything needed for a comfortable stay. We had a lovely meal at the hotel 2 blocks down, recommended by the lady at the motel reception, breakfast was great. All in all a good place to stay at a great price too.

We enjoyed our stay at the Peterborough Motel in Peterborough, SA. There are a number of hotel/pubs in town but very few motels. We had wanted a room with a kitchenette but none of the rooms had one. However our hosts have set up a kitchen in a gazebo by the pool which contained all we needed to get a meal together. Have to say that the electric frying pan and the microwave needed cleaning before we could use them, but the rest of the facility was very clean and tidy and our hosts were very generous with their tomatoes and herbs and helpful in booking us in to the Steamtown sound and light show. We were not too surprised that there was no WiFi available in the motel. It was nicely located and very quiet.

For such a modest overnight fee, as a couple we pleasantly surprised with our spacious Peterborough Motel accommodation.

Firstly we could drive right up to our room and unload, always a plus.

It was out the back (away from the main street), had good afternoon light and offered quirky views of the back of the historic main street buildings.

Although we didn't use it, as reviewer IsobelKim pointed out, the well-appointed camp kitchen was a real asset for travellers keen to cook for themselves. We would make use of this next time we come through.

The motel is within short walking distance from several hotels that do meals, as well as an iconic adaptive reuse cinema that does coffee, lunch, lollies and so on.

Our hostess Betty was very helpful and clearly runs a a 'good ship'.

We found Peterborough to be a perfect jumping off point for our trip to the Flinders and Gammon ranges (including Arkaroola) and we stocked up on fresh food here after warnings about limited supplies of non-frozen food further north.

3 adults stayed in the cottage at the rear of the motel units. The cottage is actually an old home with 12 foot ceilings. 2 spacious bedrooms with a single and queen bed in each, a spacious lounge, kitchen, seperate bathroom/toilet and laundry. There was also a clothes line and a little outdoor area at the back. At the front was an enclosed outdoor area and an undercover car parking for 1 car. The cottage was a little dated but very comfortable, spacious and good value for money.

I stayed here for 1 night on 11th april 2012 en route from Brisbane to Perth.
I found the room nicely done up, with little touches like a teapot and matching, good quality towels.
There is no cooking allowed in the room, but there is a very well appointed (and maintained) camp kitchen that has everything you could need.
As there are only 7 rooms in total, the place has a lovely homey feel.
Outside each room is a parkbench style seat along with a little table. The front of each room has lattice with creeper on them so you feel you have a little privacy.
This was by far the nicest place I stayed on my 5 night journey from east to west, and it was also the cheapest!
I'd recommend to anyone.
