“A well-presented step back in time to the colonial era”
Reviewed June 6, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

We had an enjoyable 2-night stay in The Cottage at Bluey Blundstone's in Melrose so we could do some of the walks in the Mt Remarkable National Park. Lisa and Darren have done a fantastic job in restoring Bluey Blundstone's blacksmith shop, cottage, barn and the large block of land they are set on in Melrose's main street. We have stayed in a number of restored, old colonial cottages like this over the years. The Cottage is as well done as any we have seen and it's great to see properties like this restored and put to good use, while keeping their original character. That said, it is a little quirky, with a somewhat odd layout brought about by the original stone structure of the building and the need to add a shower, modern toilet and lighting to the accommodation, so it may not be to everyone's taste. We didn't make much use of the shared kitchen and dining area, though they looked adequately fitted out. We would have used them more if we had been staying longer. When we arrived, the weather turned cold (cold for Queenslanders, anyway) and the air-conditioner struggled to warm the cottage adequately with its stone walls and slate-tiled floors. Maybe some mats on the floors would be good? The bed was very comfortable and the doona kept us nice and warm in bed. Our only other suggestions would be higher powered lights in the cottage and the shared kitchen, as it was quite hard to see in some areas, and some coat hangers in the kitchen/storage nook off the bedroom in the cottage. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and thought Lisa and Darren have done a great job in restoring the property. We dined in the North Star Hotel on both nights we were in Melrose and can recommend the food there. Alligator Gorge in the Mt Remarkable National Park is certainly a hidden gem of a walk in South Australia, and was a highlight of our visit to Melrose.

Thanks so much for your great review and we really value your suggestions. I must admit that I focus so much on ensuring there is a nice selection of tea and coffee that I completely overlooked coat hangers - this has been rectified!! We have been considering the benefits of floor mats against the potential tripping hazard so will continue to look into this. You certainly did strike cold weather in Melrose as the night time temperatures were close to zero. Kindest regards Lisa

“The ducks nuts”
Reviewed May 21, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

Although this cottage is on the main street of Melrose. (A great little town). As soon as you walk through the gate you feel like your 100's of miles and a 100 years away from any and all of what ails you. It has everything you need and nothing you don't.
Cant recommend it highly enough.

It is fantastic that you enjoyed your stay at Blueys. We like to think that Blueys is not just accommodation but somewhere that you can relax, enjoy a drink in the gardens and "step back in time".
