Early morning visit to the Farm Barn, we enjoyed feeding the animals, and giving a bottle to the sheep. We hung around for the Cow milking show which was hands on and very informative, unfortunately theres only so much info our 3 year old can take in, so we left early, not a bad place, but feel like it has a lot of unused potential.

What a pleasant surprise. We ventured out for a day with the family and went to this wonderful place. The kids had a ball and really enjoyed interacting with the animals. They loved the fact that they could hold many of the animals and the people working here were very good at monitoring how they did that, making sure the animals were safe and the interaction was positive.
Loved it all!

First off i thought i give the farm barn a visit after seeing all the lovely reviews on here. Have to say i did experience a lot of the great things spoken about on here (seeing all the animals, being able to hold them etc) BUT my big thing when it comes to places like this is proper supervision of the children when holding animals. I was sorely dissappointed by the three staff members that seemed to be on on Saturday 5/1/13, they were three young girls that looked no older than 17 or 18, they were friendly but paid little attention to the goings on of the animals. whilst standing in front of the guinea pigs 'for sale' a young child was squeezing a guinea pig so hard it was squealing, the mother finally got the child to drop it but you could tell the guinea pig was noticeably hurt, I looked around to find a staff member and could see one, i actually had to go to the other side of the building to find one. I gave her an brief overview of the situation and she dawdled over. She had a brief look at the guinea pig and decided it must be fine, no moving it to another place to keep and eye on it and prevent further injuries from other children. All she said was he looks like his foots a bit sore im sure he'll be fine. I know this is a risk when it comes to children holding any type of animals but it is really vital to have enough staff to keep an eye on the animals. I was also upset by the conditions the guinea pigs for sale were kept in, they were in a cage large enough for a mouse and there must have been 15-20 in the one cage, not separated into male and female. At three weeks old guinea pugs can get pregnant and this can result in major health issues and even death in young piggies. The rest of the place was a nice walk but honestly to see an animal get hurt and cry out for dear life really ruins your day. All im saying is, get some more staff and maybe a couple of more experienced ones.

Hi Carrie, thank you for your visit on Saturday and for taking the time to leave a review. I am disappointed to see such a poor rating however since you agreed with other reviews that you did experience a lot of great things spoken of. We have recently won the 'tourist attraction' category of the 2012 SA Tourism Awards because we do offer a fabulous experience for our visitors as judged by our peers in the tourism industry.

In relation to the supervision of children with animals, we had four experienced staff in the barn on Saturday, only one of which is a junior as we believe in giving paid work experience to young animal lovers. We always supervise children with the animals, however sometime staff assist others while some have already been assisted or are off for a short time getting carrots to give to the children to feed the animals. Unfortunately, as is the nature of young children, sometime the guinea pigs get a little squeeze even when our staff are right there with them and that is something that does happen from time to time. We can't be right beside every animal at all times as we have around 100 animals here! We have never had a guinea pig hurt by a squeeze from a child and we do check on them to make sure they are fine. The guinea pigs in the smaller enclosure are NOT for sale, they are the babies, too young yet for sale, and are all less than 3 weeks old specifically separated with their mothers for their protection from children so they don't get squeezed too hard! There is no need to separate the sexes under this age. We regularly have our vet and rabbit/guinea pigs breeder here providing consulting advice and they are all happy with the enclosures and set up we provide so we know we are providing quality care for all our animals.

It is a shame a guinea pig squeeze from another child ruined your whole day, it would be great if you could come back another time for a more enjoyable visit.

Visited the Farm Barn with my sister and her young family (2y and 6m). 2yo absolutely loved all the animals, 6mo was all smiles too, (but that could have been anything). Being able to get into the animal enclosures with the guinea pigs and rabbits inside to hold and feed them and the the deer, peacocks and kangaroos outside was fantastic! Really enjoyed feeding everything too, kids (goat kind!), lambs, alpaca... great fun. Milking demonstration was informative too (but mainly for me!)
Hahndorf is lovely for lunch as well.

Jason and the whole team provide an excellent experience from rides to petting and feeding. The reptile show is perfect for young kids and has none of the macho rubbish of many of the shows around. If you are considering buying chooks; their advice and stock is excellent.
