This is the second time we have been to Cafe Assiette, but the first time we have had a meal, as the first time we couldn't get served after sitting down (large crowd came in and filled the whole area where you need to order).

Today we went in after deciding to give it another go. The building is lovely and has lots of potential, but the atmosphere is chaotic. As you walk in, you walk past the place where orders are taken and find a seat. We assumed you find your own as there are no signs to state otherwise. menus were brought over, but we were informed that we would have to order at the counter once we made our choice. I don't have a problem with this, but I do think that at an average of $15 for a breakfast dish, it wouldn't hurt them to take our order while we are seated, as most other places of this price range do in Hahndorf.

The biggest problem with this system is that there is next to no room to actually go and place your order. The small area is filled with a table for two and a badly placed drinks fridge with a door that opens the wrong way, as well as people walking in and out through this area. The table really should go, and the fridge is almost impossible to get to if there are more than two couples ordering. To get a straw I had to weave through the crowd after waiting for a gap, then try to get back through again. Not an enjoyable experience!!

Most of this would not have mattered if the food was worth it, but sadly it was not. My partner's egg florentine had a curry-flavoured hollandaise, served on soggy toast, and overcooked eggs that were halfway between fried and poached.

My meal had a raw tomato which was slightly seared on the outside and the same horrid eggs. The only saving grace was that I finally found a place that makes thin toast, although most people seem to enjoy the chunky kind.

I didn't even finish my coffee, and that's a first for me.

Very disappointed, should have gone to The Haus instead.

Like anywhere else in hahndorf, this restaurant was packed to the max. We got there just in time before a large group of individuals came in, each looking for tables to accustom their groups, so we were lucky.

Service was alright, they were attentive. A server bumped into another and spilled our milkshake all over the floor though, but they went back and filled it back up so that's something.

Food was decent, it's extremely overpriced ($15-30 range) even for a mere salad!! Try the vienna burger however, that was good.

Overall, overpriced, overcrowded with alright service. Go to a less crowded restaurant instead.

We recently dined at this lovely little cafe for lunch. At first we were shown to our table by the fire as it was a cold day so that was a lovely touch. However after letting our waiter know that we needed a little more time to peruse the menu as it was our fist visit; we eventually had to get up and let them know we were ready to order. Then the very things we wanted ie lamb shanks and pork belly were not available. This was very disappointing and thought we could have been advised of this earlier. Itt was difficult to find something to take their place especially as we were taking our aunt out to cheer her up as her daughter is gravely ill.
Oh well better luck next time . .

Unlike a number of "touristy joints in the Adelaide Hills and valleys" Assiette is reasonably priced and the portions about right: the chips (fries to some) are yummy. House, bottled wine is also reasonably priced - but you don't run out of Chardy at lunchtime on a Saturday and the drinks fridge is less-than-strategically located (bar manager take note).
The general service was excellent with one young lady all but run off her feet trying to please everyone at once. All staff were pleasant, dressed appropriately for a rustic restaurant and efficient given the rate of customers wandering in off the street.
Cuisine has the general "Hahndorf German" theme (sossos and pork etc.) but the daily specials are varied - try the homemade pies

On recommendations read in TA we called into Cafe Assiete for lunch. The blackboard menu enticed us with "Hungarian goulash soup" which sounded good on a cool day in November. With a small open fire going the scene was set for a great hearty lunch in a cosy atmosphere.
The first disappointment was the drinks fridge being half empty and out of coke zero, the second disappointment was that all local beers were mixed up in one line so when we grabbed two bottles we had two different flavors as the labels were almost identical.
But the third and major disappointment was reserved for the incorrectly described "goulash soup".
This tasteless concoction of carrots, meat and onion with a hint of tomato barely deserved the title of stew rather than soup. The color was a lacklustre light red rather than the dark deep brown that you would expect from a genuine Hungarian goulash soup. No hint or trace of paprika, in summary, simply awful and totally misleading in being called soup. Do not order this soup as it will surely disappoint.
