My partner and I stayed at the Old Mill when a friend of his got married there.

We were expecting something snug and cozy with country charm. We were given our room key, sent through the pub, up some stairs and through a not so inviting corridor.

The particular day/night of this wedding was about 40 degrees C so we were hot and bothered after the drive up. We walked into our room which we thought was a bit outdated but the bathroom was nice. The phone was very old and the air conditioning unit was very old and loud when in use.

The main issue I had was with our window. There was a dodgy fly screen bend around (and in front of) the winder to wind the window in. To close the window we would have to pull out the bent fly screen, wind it shut and then jam it back in (photo attached). The noise from the street was quite loud with the window open and the room quite hot!

As a function facility for the wedding, it was great! Delicious food, great decorations and a lovely atmosphere.

As for the buffet breakfast, it really wasn't worth what we paid. I'd suggest seeking out a nice cafe down the road.

Room Tip: I'd suggest a chalet away from the pub section.

Daughter had her wedding reception here. Most of us stayed 1-3 nights. One room was booked and not available at checkin ( and we had to make an issue to obtain this room) There was no attention to detail. Food was average. Rooms- beds were made every day but no restocking of fridge or milk. Details like chicolate and champagne were not delivered. Would not recommend.

Stayed in the old mill Hahndorf motel, spa chalet mezzanine for a couple of weeks over Christmas 2010 (witch’s family of 5). There is plenty of room in the chalets; mezzanine with queen size bed avoids that ‘bunked in’ feeling, although it is only one room. The TV is on the bottom level so be aware that if, like the warlock, tv sport is essential to any holiday, it is not possible to watch tv from the bed upstairs. So far as choice of channels goes, for this price one doesn’t expect cable. However given that the price of set top boxes is now minimal the lack of digital tv was disappointing. Entertainment options would also be enhanced by a DVD player.
The chalets are in faux German style, i.e. exposed beams painted out in black, and nicely situated around a central courtyard with lovely shady trees. Although it can be hot in SA in summer there is efficient split system aircon, which also had a reverse-cycle heating function. There are some maintenance items in the unit which need attention. The shower screen was ripped and useless, an item which is easily and cheaply remedied, and therefore unnecessary. One corner of the bathroom tiles had mould exposed and the carpet could really have done with a good clean. Most of the furniture is, whilst serviceable, nearing the end of its life.
So far as amenities go the room comes with a mini kitchen which consists of 2 hotpoints and a basic but adequate selection of crockery, cutlery and cooking pans. Not quite enough for a gourmet feast but adequate for boiling some pasta or cooking bacon & eggs.
There is also a spa bath, which looked fine although we didn’t try it out. There is no iron/ironing board in the room, but these were provided immediately upon request. One of the major pluses for a longer stay is the free guest laundry, including dryer and line, which is an excellent service.
The staff at the front office were friendly and helpful and responded to our requests in good time. The cleaning contractors, however, whilst friendly, provided a limited service. Beds were often just ‘pulled up’ rather than made and the floor was not vacuumed every day. On 2 occasions the cleaners left the door to our unit unlocked (whilst we were out) after the daily service.
This property is fairly priced and well located in Hahndorf, which is a great spot for a holiday, and we would probably stay here again. However, there is one major issue which needs to be resolved before we do. The queen size bed in the mezannine was very old and worn out and must be replaced. The bed sagged so badly that the witch was very grumpy with a bad back. Reportedly the kids beds weren’t all that comfy either. The pillows were also old and hard. Please fix this issue – poor quality of sleep almost ruined what was an otherwise pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a new bed.
