“Lovely & Peaceful!”
Reviewed January 26, 2011

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in January in the Garden Retreat of the Birks River House and absolutely loved our time there. The retreat was enormous with a stunning large bedroom with ensuite, huge living area with great couch and big screen tv (perfect for stretching out and watching the tennis!) and a great kitchen with everything you could ask for in it. The surrounding grounds and swimming pool were fantastic and also very private which meant we could relax by the pool all afternoon with a good book and a few drinks which is exactly what we were after! Wendy was an extremely helpful host who made sure we could settle in immediately with an extremely thoughtful basket of provisions left for us in the kitchen (breakfast items, lovely wine & port, crusty bread, fruit and some great nibbles). She has also done a great job with the interior design of the retreat with everything feeling very luxurious, whilst also practical and relaxed at the same time! Nothing more to say except we will be back for sure!

We enjoyed our stay at Birk’s Boathouse very much. It was relaxing and peaceful in an unique setting. We sat and read looking out onto the marina and just taking it easy, a lovely way to spend a long weekend.

My husband and I stayed two nights at the lovely Birks Harbour Boathouse and our only wish was that it could have been longer. The beautifully decorated house was so cozy with all the comforts of home, even a pre-laid fire ready for a match. The lovely views from the private deck and out the large windows toward the marina. Wendy and Phil Watson had the cupboards stocked with everything we needed for a lovely couple of days and were available if we needed anything. They were very personable and we were happy to meet them.
There is no internet but it's so peaceful, we didn't even use the TV!
The perfect place to get away from it all.

Stayed here 2 nights in September 2010.The weather was a bit cool so made use of the cosy log fire but was not able to uase the deck but would love to come back in warmer weather to do that.
I have always wanted to stay in a "waterfront" which it truly is now that the lower Murray has water.
The boathouse had eveything you could want & lots of thoughtful touches.
Some ahve complained that the front picture window was not very private but we never was anyone at the jetty the whole time we were there - maybe this would be more of an issue at the height of summer.
Would go back in a flash!

We stayed three nights recently at Birks River House Garden View. It is an amazing location. The decor is outstanding, the views of the river from every room are amazing, the gardens are vast and indulgent, the furnishings opulent but casual. The bay window in the master bedroom is unbeatable for an afternoons relaxing with a book and watching the light fade over the river. The owners graciously allowed us to use their personal mountain bikes to take a ride from Goolwa to port Elliot, an easy 30km return trip past spectacular coastline and with world class cafes to break the trip - can't recommend this one enough - and I am usually very hard to please. With the incorporation of the boat house, the river house and the lovely gardens, what a lovely slice of history you have reinvigorated. So worth the visit. Thank you

The Birkes River House Retreat - This was without question, more than we expected. Fantastic hospitality, generous hamper and extras, a beautiful setting including swimming pool in a great location with lots to do. We spent 2 nights and enjoyed the region with all it had to offer. We wished we had more time to just enjoy the accomodation - it was just perfect. We will definitely return!

In our many years of travel, we have stayed at only one place more than once. We will return to Birks River Boathouse. We stayed there early January 2010 with our two boys (4 and 7) who caught 7 fish from our deck so, yes, there is plenty of water. The place was immaculate, beautifully decorated, and the hamper of provisions was divine (sourdough loaf, olive oil, biscuits, Carmens muesli and muesli bars, chocolate, local wine, etc). There are also lots of those little extras that make things more pleasurable when you are so far from home like gorgeous toiletries, magazines and books, lovely glassware and the list goes on. The owners are very kind and offer to help with anything you may need. The nearby towns are lovely. Sure, you do see the occasional boat owner arriving in the morning to do some maintenance on his boat but, heck, it is a boathouse after all! Yes, I would recommend it!
