We have just stayed two nights in the Boathouse, and there was everything one would want for a shortstay - peace and quiet, gorgeous river outlook, excellent reading material, a beautifully appointed open plan space, a careful selection of fruit and breakfast items, plus nibbles to enjoy with a bottle of wine, and port to follow. We were impressed by the thought that had gone into the space - its atmosphere was deeply relaxing, nothing had been overlooked. Recommended for the busy couple needing comfortable surrounds, and especially water lovers.

Hosts Wendy and Phil are very friendly and informative. We arrived on a cold night to a lovely warm house. This house is thoughtfully decorated, clean and inviting with every modern convenience. Yet there's history here. There are beautiful garden views through to the Boathouse and river from the bedroom. Seating areas and animal artworks throughout the garden add balance. We took advangage of the huge kitchen & the herb garden outside the window. Unexpected little treats surprise & delight. This is a bird lover's & photographer's paradise. It's a pleasant walk along the water's edge to local eateries, galleries & shops. Even when the weather's cold & windy outside, it's warm & cosy inside. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect stay.

Well appointed, clean and very relaxing, the ambiance is very special with views to the garden and the river. Both Wendy and Phil are great hosts and love a chat, our stay was just what we needed to unwind.

Wendy and Phil are so very friendly and every detail shows their passion in making your stay a pleasurable one! so clean and little treats throughout the boathouse will make you feel very relaxed and pampered! we enjoyed our stay in July 2013, the weather was horrible, but did not stop us enjoying our stay here, the fire was ready and burning when we arrived and was kept on most of the time. the wildlife in the area are very tranquil and blissful to observe! well worth visiting this little place in paradise!

Room Tip: this place is great both summer and winter!

We stayed at the boathouse for my birthday, and loved it here. It was something a little different. So much reading material. Very relaxing and loved the ambience. Nice looking at the boats out of the lounge window. Lots to do in this area as well.

Hey guys we had a great weekend at Goolwa South Australia staying at the Boathouse Birks Harbour. It is so relaxing and the ambiance is fantastic. The detail that the hosts have gone to create a memorable stay is unbelievable. Inside the Boathouse it is like you are back at the turn of the Century (19th -20th) with beautiful decorations and soft furnishings that hark back to a bygone era of paddle steamers and riverboats but with all modern conveniences. Outside you are right on the water's edge on the Birks Harbour Marina with all the wooden boats moored just metres from your bedroom and lounge. The views are to die for. And being a boatie just adds to the convenience. But if you just want a romantic break this is the place to be. You don’t have to have a boat to enjoy the experience. Thanks Wendy and Phil for the memories. We will return.

Room Tip: Have a B BQ on the deck at sunset and the views are magnificent. Sunrise brings water birds in their...

It is a pity you only get 5 stars to choose from - Could not fault anything and it exceeded our expectations. Wendy and Phil are wonderful hosts and Birks Retreat (we stayed in the garden view room this time) is a little escape from reality. Will defintely be back AGAIN!

Room Tip: Any - they all have their own character and charm
